Hey all:
What's with the advertisements on Soundcloud of late? I had to listen to 45 seconds of ads to listen to a single song tonight. Or elect to pay 5 bucks a month to be free of the ads, which I don't see myself doing. Does the revenue they generate on the ads REALLY go to the artists, and if so, how much? I'm betting not much.
Anyway, what do you folks think about this? I'm inclined to go more in on Soundclick, though I'm sure it's just a matter of time before they go there as well.
Hope everyone is safe and healthy.
My best to all of you,
Deej

Deej. I pay around £70 per year. To get rid of the adds. Not seen any money yet coming the other way though. I had a message the other day telling me that I can add a button that allows others to donate to my worthy cause but I've not seen the elusive button yet. I don't use Soundclick anymore since they changed their site. Too fiddly and they won't take wav files.

I have the paid PRO version of SoundCloud. For me the motivation wasn't to avoid ads (I don't think they had them when I signed up) but to be able to replace files of existing songs at will without having to post each as a new song. There are some other features too. I prefer it to SoundClick for a few reasons - nicer layout, better embedding in other websites and it seems to be much more popular with listeners, especially on their phones. I don't think SoundClick even has an app, at least not that I can find in the iPhone app store. Even with the paid version, I get ads when using the app on my phone, though they only last a few seconds and don't happen very often. I don't get them on the computer. I imagine SoundCloud is under pressure to actually make some money.

Vic,
I can't hear any difference on Soundcloud using wav files vs high quality MP3 files. I know theoretically the wav file has more data, but Soundcloud's processing in my mind cannot discern any difference. In my DAW I can hear the difference for sure. I use Soundcloud, but there tech support sucks. As far as advertising on Soundcloud, I don't like it but these sites need revenue just as this one does. But the problem with advertising is in the long run the advertisers always get greedy and eventually ruin a good thing.

Gavin,Interesting . . . because I've also gone with the PRO version and I'm getting the advertisements over the last few days only . . . I actually signed up with PRO after a post you made noting it allowed you to replace existing files--a necessary feature. Are you not getting ads recently on your laptop? It almost seems that they want you to sign up for Soundcloud Go at an addition 5 bucks a month or upgrade to Soundcloud PRO Select (or whatever they call it). Thirteen to 16 bucks a month starts getting a little pricey versus some of the free services. I'd somewhat be OK with it if I believed the dollars actually made it back to the artists . . . Call me cynical, but I think that's most likely bunch of PR BS. Soundclick is a little higher maintenance in terms of getting a song loaded . . . but it's free, AND ad free, for now. Dunno. The problem is, me not using Soundcloud doesn't solve the issue, as many folks do, and then I'm still subjected to the ads just to hear their songs. Sigh! Vic, glad you found the button. Here's hoping it make you some money! Stay well, gents! Deej

Deej, To be honest, I don't listen a whole lot on my laptop, really only when I follow a link here or at another forum I belong to to comment on someone's song. I rarely click from that song to another. If I listened more on my laptop, maybe I would get the ads. Apart from the convenience, I prefer the sound I get through my phone. Are you able to listen to SoundClick on your phone? I can't find an app in the iPhone app store. In fact, when I search for SoundClick, what comes up as the nearest suggestion is SoundCloud Maybe there is one for Android phones? If there is no phone app, then that is a major disadvantage and will simply exclude a lot of listeners. Another advantage of SoundCloud is that it is easily embedded in websites, so that it can be played right there without following a link. The other forum I belong to supports SoundCloud in this way but not SoundClick. This advantage has lessened somewhat since Facebook stopped allowing embedding of this kind. Now, if you post a link to a song on Facebook, it takes you to SoundCloud itself. This is already a pity, because people are more likely to listen within Facebook, but it's even more of a problem because if you are on your phone and don't already have the SoundCloud app, you will need to download it to listen. Nobody is going to do that. In future, I have my songs hosted at my website, so in future I'll post that link in Facebook rather than SoundCloud. Eddie, I can hear the difference between songs posted as mp3 or .wav files at SoundCloud. The .wav files seem to me to have slightly better quality. Paradoxically, this doesn't help me a whole lot as my songs probably sound better if you can't hear them quite as well
