Monkey on my back Verse I got a monkey on my back He like to be called Captain Jack. Have strings like a marionette. I am the monkey’s pet. My room is dark, the shades are drawn. The light of day will soon be gone. The candle light upon a spoon. The setting sun a junkie’s moon. Chorus Free me from the junkie juice. Cut the wires and set me loose. He tugs my wires brings me back. Got the monkey on my back. Verse The venom pours into my vein. I’m half unconscious half insane. I’m snow-blind to the world around. There’s so much noise without a sound. I’m like a yoyo on his string. I need the needle and its sting. I’m just a little monkey’s pet. Dancing like a marionette. Chorus Free me from the junkie juice. Cut the wires and set me loose. He tugs my wires brings me back. Got the monkey on my back. Verse He keeps me in a cold steel cage. He holds me tightly with his rage. He tugs the wires he jerks the chain. He brings me pleasure brings me pain. I’ll cheat and lie to get some more. I’ll roll on you to get a score. I’ve got this monkey on my back. I’ve got the needle in its track. Chorus I’m a slave to his desire. Need to get a little higher. Junkie on a way trip. I’m going down with the ship. Bridge I close my eyes it’s like a dream. Wake up to the monkeys scream. I reach to grab my forty five. Too afraid to stay alive. Tag Cut the wires break the chain. Put a bullet in my brain.

I have spent the past 40 years in recovery and working as an addictions counselor. Your words capture the slavery and pleasure/pain hell so well. May I have your permission to share it with my patients? They are soldiers, men and women, caught up in the hell of war and the aftermath of coping with those experiences. Too many have turned to black tar heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine here in southern California. Many have reached that threshold of death being an option for escape.
