Farm Aid Email:

Dear Gary,

This has not been an easy week for many people around the world. We are all navigating new challenges and concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic. We hope that every one of you stays healthy and safe.

Our priority, as always, is the health and well-being of family farmers and ranchers. Farm Aid staff are working (from home) to learn all we can about the impacts of this virus on farmers, rural communities and our food system. We are collaborating and contributing to plans and policies in development to respond to the disaster. And as always, we are connecting to farmers and ranchers on our hotline.

Already, we have seen people coming together to create solutions, farmers getting creative about how they can continue to feed their communities, and volunteers willing to donate their time and energy to take care of the most vulnerable people in our country. We are inspired by this spirit of generosity and compassion. Together we will make it through this challenge, and hopefully on the other side, we will emerge stronger than before.

As Willie always says: Stay Strong and Positive,

From all of us at Farm Aid

Following Willie's advice, we thought we'd share some of the songs that make us happy. Check out our Spotify and YouTube playlists. Let us know if you have songs from Farm Aid artists to add!

It's officially spring, which means time to think about planting. Have you tried your hand at growing peas? They're one of the first crops you can plant in early spring. All it takes to grow peas is a little bit of space, seeds, and some know-how (which you can get from our HOMEGROWN 101 ).

We still have three feet of snow on our fields and still snow storms coming every week. We usually can't start working our land till mid May, unless we start getting some good melting weather, it may be mid June or later this year. We have a short growing season as it is, any later planting past the end of June will likely mean a small crop or no crop at all. The life of a farmer is not easy at the best of times, weather is one factor which we have little or no control over. Irrigation helps if we get no rain, spraying for insects and weeds give some control, no heat, we have no control over, flooding, little control, too much rain, no control, frost in growing season, no control. Labour for harvesting becoming a big problem, fires, little control, wind storms, no control, and low prices for crops, little control, getting crops to market often in the hands of railways and truckers. Farmers are your ultimate gamblers, lots of odds against us but still we roll the dice. Crop insurance is weighed so much in favour of the company, many farmers choose not to buy. Of course there is always machinery break downs, if you have money, that can most times be controlled, just hope it doesn't happen at a critical time. Everything is rush rush, rushing to plant, rushing to make hay, rushing to spray timely, and rushing to harvest ahead of winter.

Appreciate farmers and fishermen, those two groups are the ones that feed us at least 85% of the food we consume.

The weather may break soon. The usual fluctuations are likely to still come, in varying degrees, here in Southern Ohio known as Dogwood Winter, Blackberry Winter, little cold spells that come back about the time these things blossom. They can dip deeper into cold, or be milder than usual, but they'll likely be there, perceptible, some 'norm' of climate altered only in degree, but not totally eliminated. It's the farmer's technique to learn how to cope with the known and unknown whims of Mother Nature, Old Man Winter, and Human frailty.
In a Song on my website, "We Could Use A Little Rain", I sing about the plight of the farmer, and his helpmate, his wife Sarah.
Every year, no matter what comes, we still depend on the whims of Mother Nature for when we get to work the land, and what She does with what we do. Still, we try, and no matter what, we try again.

There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com
