Assuming you have a rider when you get a comp meal, what do you get? Same thing as any other day or special coz of the show? Do you try to keep it light, or would you eat an entire chocolate cake? Anybody go on empty and then eat after the show?

Talk among yourselves, my dinner is ready: a guitar pick shaped chicken breast.

Light or I feel like mud.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

What you eat earlier accounts for the energy conversion at showtime.

A preacher came to do a Revival, back in the early 20th Century, at Rarden, Ohio. The man telling of it, born in 1911, said his father brought a preacher back from some big conclave of preachers in Dayton, Ohio, each year. This year the man was a large, round torso'ed man. The preacher would stay with them, dining with them while there. On Sunday he said his mother asked, "Do you want your chicken dinner befor you preach, or after?"
"The empty barrel sounds the loudest!" the preacher declared.
Not having a belly full of food is likely a preferred condition for being on stage.
The earlier food intake. A man recommended cottage cheese. Bike riders recommend pasta, before a race. How long before, they didn't say. You can probably ascertain for yourself when that quick-burning carbohydrate kicks in and supplies the demanded energy.
I played one Christmas in a local store. Wearing a white shirt I didn't want to risk a stain eating before the 'show'. I hadn't eaten breakfast. I perceived my timing was off, and couldn't fix it, in every Song I played. Something to do with heart rate I surmised. So you don't want your 'barrel' to be empty. And you don't want it full. And you do want to figure out what to put in it, and when.
A little known fact is that whatever food you 'break fast' with, the first meal of the day, after sleeping 8 hours, flips a switch in pancreatic function, from producing insulin to command 85% of the cholesterol in your blood to come from your liver, for the purpose of storing the excess calories in the substance you flipped the switch with as fat, and producing...is it...glycogen?...for the purpose of burning the calories in what you ate to 'break fast'.
Proteins burn calories. You can run all day on a protein breakfast. Carbohydrates burn quickly, soon after eating, storing excess calories as fat, and causing craving for more of the same.
The complimentary meal with the gig can usually come in a to-go box, for a late-night snack, and/or tomorrow's 'break fast'.
The complimentary drinks, should be taken in moderation. Remember, you have to perform, and then you have to drive home.

There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

Yep, that's me. Too nervous to eat. A single beer before, and if given the choice, a juicy steak afterwards.

cheers, niteshift

I usually only get copious amounts of diet coke by the pitcher and large cup. After the show if they are still serving I get whatever looks good.

Funny thing about this post, I was reminiscing that for 10 years it never occurred to me to even ask for food or drink. I would take it when they made the effort to offer, but if not, I would pay like everyone else. Things you don't know if you don't know, you know?

One long standing gig I had we used to set up in the afternoon, go home and snooze for a while and then come back and start around 7. I never gave much thought to what I was eating, I wasnt performing for a crowd that required me to jump all over the stage, drenched in sweat, to the point of near exhaustion from liberating 50 thousand screaming fans!

No, my job was to entertain the tavern drunks, who never as much picked their heads up from the shot glass.

The times when I was able to bring in alot of people I already knew to come down and check us out, I would usually eat whatever I wanted to, and often was paid by free beer at the gig. I would get buzzed enough to still play, but not too drunk where I couldnt. This helped the nerves till I got to the point where I didnt need to do that.

In hindsight, wth was so nerve racking?

I like to eat lightly a few hours before performing. I try to eat lightly before rehearsal too, as Vic says, that muddy feeling. I remember when one of our singers burped the whole first line of The Gambler. "On a warm summers evening." As for drinking, I used to pound them down and sweat them out. We were partying and selling their drinks. Then I started to listen to the other guys and realized we weren't playing all that well. Now days, its 2 drinks and make sure they see you drinking. Help them sell it.

Interesting, I usually try to stay very hydrated lots of water. Probably have a good meal about 3-4 hours before and a sandwich or so if needed about an hour before.

I find that when I don't eat properly I get really dry in the mouth.
