Hey guys,

This is one of the things that I have to constantly remind myself of...
How many of us take this to heart? I try to remind myself of this especially
when someone is giving their opinion on one of my songs.
This is perhaps one of the most challenging things to overcome as a
Songwriter... Thoughts?-Dana

True, but it is something you created, it's part of you, almost like your child. So when people criticize, pick apart, make fun of, etc.. it can hurt. And people will find fault because perfection is in the eye of the beholder and nothing is ever perfect.

Hey Everett,

Yes, I agree that's how it feels most of the time, but this is what I would like to overcome.
I don't want to feel like a song is one of my limbs.
I want to be able to feel a certain detachment after I write it, so I can re-write it better without taking the criticism to heart...
I am finding lots of time in between seems to work, for instance I came across two songs that I wrote several years back, and though
they hit more powerful today than when I wrote them, and yet somehow I am strangely detached from feeling an all consuming 'ownership' that I felt when I first penned them. I feel like NOW, I can hear criticism and take it for what it is... just an opinion.
Thanks for your input!-Cheers-Dana

Well the truth is, Paul Mccartney could post a song here, and if nobody knew who he was, and he posted a rough demo, you would probably see critiques.

I guess we think we are different than music listeners. Im trying to become a music listener again! Once you start this analyzing stuff its not as fun any more. MOST critiques are based on what would a "publisher" think. As if a publisher would really NOT accept a great song because there's a word that doesnt rhyme!

Ill take the great song with blemishes more than I would a decent...perfect song...any day

All we can do for critiques is say "this is how I would have written it" not much else.

Nowadays most critiques are on the recording.... which is also subjective and we can get carried away with it too

Does the song make me feel something..anything at all, doesnt have to be major could be very simple. That's the major goal of a song, besides just entertainment.

Hey Fd,

Thanks for chiming in. You have an interesting view point, some I believe make a lot of sense. I like the fact that you are trying to become a 'Listener' again. I think the same things at times. You make a point that we ARE different than music listeners, and I feel that as Writers of Songs, that is very true, because we tend to listen as Songwriters. I think if you write a song that hits all the marks, that makes that task much easier to accomplish.

When your song is free of minor distractions (blemishes) people are free to do that, even us as Songwriters. I don't take for granted the keen ears of the listening public, they might not be able to pinpoint what the blemish is in your song if they hear one, but you can bet it won't sit right with them... They will 'Feel' something is not quite right...
They are your "Publisher' if you ask me lol...
Great points!-Dana

"The standard by which I now measure the things in my life is the following: If I was on my death bed, or if I knew I had a short time to live, would this issue be important? If the answer is no.. I don't sweat it at all. If the answer is Yes, you better believe it goes to the front of the order of today's business!" -Brian Austin Whitney
