Once upon a time, when I used to buy, fix and sell a lot of used cars, the salesmen I knew used this term a lot, "Lookie-Loo's", to describe people who would walk all around their lots and look at every car there, just to end up never buying anything. Now I am not saying we are trying to sell anything here, but there are a lot more Lookie-Loo's, and "Listenie-Loo's", than there are people commenting on anything here. Are they all too shy to comment? Do they think everything is too bad to comment on? Are they looking for ideas for their own songwriting, lyrics or music? These are the things that float through my head.
What do you think?

Over the years I've been contacted by lurkers. They generally have an unfavorable view of what's posted on forums like this.

Very, very few pro writers would come here for songwriting ideas. Pro writers are hook oriented, most writers on these sites aren't.

There are people who just like to snoop, or have a couple of posters they watch.

Hi Robert,
At the minute, it says there are 22 members and 20,131 guests, I'm thinking maybe the counter is a bit off, or maybe it is adding up more than current guests. If there are that many, this is a pretty popular place to hang out. And out of curiosity, why would anyone want to come to a site if they didn't like the content? I sure wouldn't, more than once.

What I said above was typed in haste (always a mistake), and was what I was told, more than once, many years ago.

Pro writers do tend to be hook oriented and you generally don't see strong titles on these sites.

Bu-ut, that doesn't account for all the lurkers. Some of the topics are really entertaining, that's undeniable. I'm a longtime JPFer and while everyone knows I think the first generation left a little to be desired in the writing department, I liked them all and really miss them. Who doesn't miss a great argument, now and then? I knew I could argue with Bobbie Gallup and she wasn't gonna troll me, there was an underlying sense of family there.

Lurkers may feel the same about JPF...it's a cyber-Cheers where they come to listen to Sam, Diane, Norm, Cliff and Frasier shoot the [naughty word removed] from a distance.

Yup, but I wonder how many are songwriters, or aspiring songwriters, are they learning anything here, or just here for the entertainment value, are they ever going to join and throw their 2 cents worth into the ring? I sure miss Bobbie, and some of the other folk who used to be on here all the time, with comments and advice, and some of the great music and lyrics they shared. There are lots of top 100 posters we don't see any more, I was one of them for a while, smack me. I sure hope some of them at least come back to visit now and again.

Most people aren't analytical about Songs, their own or others.
And many aren't adept at putting whatever thoughts they have into words.
Then there's a group who are afraid of troll-type criticism if they DO comment.
Another percentage who simply explore the web looking for something new, or in idle exploration.
Another portion are aware that if they document their 'access' to a work they may be accused of plagiarizing it in their own 'product'. That's why many commercial entities will not read or listen to unsolicited 'mail'.
I think it is enough that you get 'Views'. Everything you might hope to happen, short of advice or critique, is potentially in those Views.
Often, you can tell by a comment that the commenter did not read or listen to what you posted. Their comments are off the point you made or irrelevant to the content and context of what you posted, so much so that they serve no purpose to you.
So being content with Views is where I've settled, hoping some rich woman will find me and make me rich before I die. She'd better hurry up!
Oh! Back on Songwriter101 years ago Simon Cowell posted a comment. Everyone was skeptical it was the 'talent' scouting the site. Moderators confirmed it was the 'real' Cowell. So, among the Lookie-Loo Viewers may be someone with genuine commercial interest whose silence is golden. (I hope she's smart, and pretty, and funny. Or just a mammal.)

There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

Hi John and fellow JPF "Posters:"

To your original question using the used car analogy, many Car Dealers called them, "Tire Kickers."

I also miss Bobbie Gallup and the old-timers who frequented this website for so many years. I did not get to attend that "event" held not far from Grinder's Switch in Tennessee all those years ago... but remember them well and with much fondness. I wonder how many of those attendees are still among the living?

Regards, ----Dave

Hi Guys,
Personally, I wish some more of our viewers would become members, we could use some new blood, and some of the older blood, commenting on works here. It would make it a lot more lively. Wouldn't that be great. And yes, Dave, tire kickers too. I still remember how much interest Pineyfest generated at the time. Wish we could get all that energy back.
