Travis's original lyric with a few changes and additions, including a bridge.
Comments appreciated.
The second link is the one with harmony in the chorus only
Thank you in advance.

Beyond the horizon ©2019 j vaughan/v arnold
V1
She sits on her doorstep,
looks at the high tide
As the wind sweeps the rain
across the empty quayside
Most days find her waiting
her patience won't lack
but daddy's gone fishing
and she prays he'll come back
Ch.
There's waves tall as mountains
and fish that can fly
Sometimes you can't tell
where ocean meets sky
Beyond the horizon
where seagulls soar high
are ghostly old shipwrecks
where mermaids swim by
V2
There's little in the larder
and comfort is scarce
No boats in the harbour
No pennies in purse
Maybe on todays tide
or as the sun's rising
a boat will appear
just on the horizon
Ch.
Inst.
Bridge
When daddy comes home there'll be work for us all
Holds will be bulging with herrings they've trawled
But last night a big storm had lit up the skies
and mother's still waiting, with hope in her eyes
Ch.

Hi Vic and Travis:

A great many "American Country" songs appear to have roots in songs such as "Beyond the Horizon." Sea Chants, Southern Gospel (as sung in Black denominations) and Nordic songs about the sea. Every now and then, I take time to listen to a cross section of what is being "played" or "aired" on Radio Stations within my range... and "folk" as a genre, is being forgotten rapidly because the "target audience" of most stations here are young people who don't seem to care about history, geography or their ancestry.

Forgive the lecture... I was only lamenting that good music is being wasted or lost and most of the "stuff" I hear on radio or TV is not fit for human consumption. Old men's opinions seldom amount to much... but at least I have one and am free to express it.

I liked the Title, the use of the Mandolin for backing, the Lyric and the story it told. As always, Vic... your vocal and performance are always "spot-on" and special. Travis' trunk of lyrics always seems to have a bit of folk-lore wrapped up inside... and, to me, that is a good thing. Keeping a genre alive... and providing entertainment to those who still care.

Happy New Year, you two! Enjoyed the song. ----Dave

Thank you Dave.
Oddly enough, folk "with a beat" seems to be having a bit of a revival in my neck of the woods though we aren't in the city.

Nice one - I love a good 6/8 or is it 3/4 - I can never tell. smile
anyway it has a rolling nautical feel to it and tells a great story without revealing how it ends.. smile
How many wives/families waited for fishermen to return from the sea?
Universally appealing at least to this old sailor smile

Yes Paul. Those timings get me too. I think this is 3/4. 6/8 is faster. I usually say fast waltz and slow waltz. There probably is a mathematical formula to it.
Thanks for commenting.

I'm a sucker for 3/4 too, and, as Paul says, it gives this a rolling ocean feel that sits really nicely with the lyric. Enjoyed it a lot. Easy to sing/hum along to, which is always a plus.

I probably would leave out the chorus effect (or whatever the technical term for it is) on the verses and then bring it in on the actual chorus. You left it off during the bridge and I thought that worked really well.

Personally, I'm glad folk, swing, waltz, and a few others canít be rip hopped....

I like this style of storytelling, just enough info to create a visual and spark the imagination. Good one guys! smile

Hi Gavin.
Thanks for listening.
What effect do you mean? Are you talking about the other harmony voice?
I did have this down as an Everly style song so two voices would be a minimum requirement.
Of course it could also be done with one vocal and two vocals in the chorus if that's what you're suggesting. That is usually how it's done. I just wanted something slightly different.

Vic

Hi Vic. Yes, that's what I mean. I think it would work better with a single voice in the verses. This is just my opinion and a matter of taste. I listened again and it's less intrusive when you're used to it but to me it would still be better with a single voice in the verses. What do others think?
It's a very nice song either way.

Thanks again Gavin.
Well maybe the harmony thing all the way through doesn't work for all and maybe the Everly's style is dead and gone for most but I was indulging.
Perhaps I'll do another version.

I thought the Everly Bros touch worked well Gavin, as Vic said different but it great to receive a suggestion or 3 that's what it's all about, ( just like the Hokey Cokey)
Happy New Year and thanks once more for the listen and comments

The slow waltz is my favorite to dance to. I miss this kind of song on today's radio. I would much rather hear them than most anything on today, including today's country. I like it. And yes, movies/TV are your best chances for this one. Thanks for sharing.

Have a goodun,

It would be nice to hear what others think. I could be totally alone in thinking this.

A few days ago one of my friends said he thought there was too much reverb on the vocals.
I said there wasn't much at all but then after your comment I thought she probably meant the second voice which does give it a reverby sound.

I will put up a version with a single voice today so we can compare.

I like that better. The verses sound more intimate and it adds variety when the harmony comes in - in my opinion smile

If you wanted to do any more to it, quiet "ooh"s behind the second verse might be nice. It's great as it is though.

The title, THE Hook, should be summary of the storyline, and I think it is. But it's buried in the middle of the Chorus where it doesn't stand out to serve its function. The other Lines serve expositional function, supplying details more in service to setting the scene than summing up.
Adding the title/Hook at the end could help.

Ch.
There's waves tall as mountains
and fish that can fly
Sometimes you can't tell
where ocean meets sky
Beyond The Horizon
where seagulls soar high
are ghostly old shipwrecks
where mermaids swim by
Beyond The Horizon.

Another option is to put the reference to "where ocean meets sky" closer to "Beyond The Horizon".
Ch.

Beyond The Horizon
where seagulls soar high
are ghostly old shipwrecks
where mermaids swim by
There's waves tall as mountains
and fish that can fly
Sometimes you can't tell
where ocean meets sky
Beyond The Horizon.

A Bridge generally functions best if it has its own Melody, varying from Melody of Verse or Chorus, a renewing of listener interest, to enable a final giving of the Chorus. I think yours sounds pretty much like the two Verses that precede it. Depicted in four long Lines the phrasing breaks down into eight shorter Lines, just like the preceding Verses.

Bridge
When daddy comes home there'll be work for us all
Holds will be bulging with herrings they've trawled
But last night a big storm had lit up the skies
and mother's still waiting, with hope in her eyes

Bridge, or Verse III?
When daddy comes home
there'll be work for us all
Holds will be bulging
with herring they've trawled
Last night a big storm
had lit up the skies
and mother's still waiting,
with hope in her eyes

There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

Geez Vic and Travis, thats very beautiful. sounds like a lullaby to me and something anyone might sing acapella, I think it would fly with or without music, just my thought. good stuff. Lane

Thanks again Gavin.
Three people have said they prefer the newest version. So it seems "The Everly's" may be gone.

Hi Gary.
Thanks for your suggs. An interesting view.

My understanding of a "hook" and a "bridge" are a little different though.
A "hook" doesn't have to be the title and can be a memorable riff or phrase that draws the listener to the song.
Sometimes, as in this song it is part of the story or the first line of a chorus. They are often used where the main lyric isn't that important, like in some pop or rock songs.

A bridge is a link. Usually between two similar parts of a song to give relief. In this case it's between the last two choruses.
The bridge here does have a different melody although I would agree it's similar in meter.

Always good to hear different views so thanks again.

Vic

Thanks Lane, for the generous comments.
Yes I can imagine it without music.

Hi Gary
Thanks for your comments.
As Vic stated I think the hook can be flexible in this instance in the middle but not necessarily buried.
There's a subtle hint at the end of v2 as well.
Of course changes/options can be made which they already have.
Thanks again for your views and listen
John

Vic and Travis,

I like both versionsóbut I agree that the second works a lot better as it has the secondary effect of accentuating the chorus, and I definitely prefer that version. Pretty tune and pretty vocalónicely done, Vic! Terrific and impressive collaboration.

My best to you both,

Deej
