Linda-- Haha! I had so much fun listening to Wing when I first found that site! It cracked me up so bad!

I'm not sure there IS a song that's good for her voice.

The sheer number of karaoke-type songs she has recorded is too funny....everything from musicals to Christmas songs to Beatles stuff...and "Highway to Hell" is my all-time favorite Wing song!!! Haha!

I also think it's hilarious to hear the unusual lyrics she uses, not quite what was intended, and on she goes. Heehee!

She's probably a very nice person, but wow! I don't remember how I found her. I think a friend sent me a link. Whoever it was has given me a lot of laughs. --Jean

My husband says to mention Bing Crosby & David Bowie's duet of "The Little Drummer Boy."

Seems like Bing would love the part that goes, "Pa-rum-pa-pum-pum"! [Linked Image] --Jean

That is some piece of work. I don't believe it was ever released as a record, although I'm sure I have heard the recording on the radio. It came from a TV variety Christmas special many years ago. I think it was Bing's show and David was a guest. I remember it very well. If you think the song sounds strange, just image der Bingle standing side-by-side with old Ziggy Stardust himself. Strange bedfellows, indeed.

How about Frankie Lane's horrible version of "I Believe?" (shudder) Personally, I feel the Lettermen's version was fantastic (they never fail to get tears from me when I hear them sing it live). Frankie Lane causes tears but of a different sort.

Totally disagree. Stewart has shown a surprisingly natural empathy with the material. Does he sound like the stereotypical Bing/Sinatra style crooner? No. But he still has done an excellent job with most of these songs. Truly a great singer.

That's okay with me.

[Rod Stewart is]... Truly a great singer.

I agree wholeheartedly. I dislike his treatment of the standards not for what he did, but for what he didn't do: interpret them by using his style and imagination. The instrumentation and the arrangements on those records are just dreadfully cliche. Rod's singing is fine, but I sure would love to have heard him take those songs somewhere they had never been before. If I want to hear the same tired old sounds and arrangements, I can listen to Tony Bennett, or Johnny Mathis, both of whom sing them better anyway.

I don't blame Rod for what he's done. He has reinvneted himself and assured that his career will stay vital for a long time to come. Good for him. I did not expect him to go into his 60's dressed in Spandex and warbling "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy." I tip my hat to him, but I think, with the path he took, he abandoned a great opportunity to be creative.

Seriously though, I've never met anyone (that I know off) who didn't like this song. Certainly all my immediate friends and family (huge btw!) love it. A lot of people on here seem to equate leftfield or odddball with being bad.

I have to defend the Manson cover of Sweet Dreams - I am not in anyone's imagination a Marilyn Manson fan, or am even familiar with his music, but I liked this cover.

I hate to say this because even though she lost me a few years ago I adore Courtney Love but Hole's Cover of Fleetwood Mac/Stevie's 'Gold Dust Woman' - was horrible - Love Hole. Love Stevie. Love that song. I enjoy artists doing a different take when they cover another artists' work - and I tried and tried to like it but I can't.

Truman--I could not agree more! It's painful to hear those great jazz standards butchered and dragged down. Aaaaaaagh! It's so SAD! And not in a good way!

Neil Sadaka....well, I always found myself thinking about how high his voice was, and how I originally thought I was listening to a woman sing, that I got distracted when he came on the radio. "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" is a well-written song...did he really RE-record it??? Why?? Hmmm.

--Jean

Hi Guys

Jazz! what are you talking about , ? "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" is a sixty's pop song . both versions are great slow or fast.

What are you guys listening too/ or maybe what are you listening with.

Comments on Joe Cocker

Beatles covers, Joe Cocker Little Help from My friends Brilliant version you obviuosly don't like Joe Cocker or the style he sings in, Ray Charles was the master and Joe is not far behind.
Each to his own.

SplitLevel, I was responding to Truman's post. He wrote:

"Here's one for ya: I think Neil Sedaka's sappy, syrupy, barf-bag retread of his OWN hit, "Breaking Up is Hard to Do," is one of the worst cover recordings I have ever heard.

It's hard to imagine great music being maimed so thouroughly as what Rod Stewart has been doing the last few years. Yikes!"

---------------------------------

My comments about "jazz standards" were about ROD STEWART. I wasn't calling "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" a jazz standard.

My other comments were just surprise that Neil Sadaka re-recorded his own hit.

I've never heard the newer recording. Don't really care to. They played the first hit so many times on the radio that I could not stand to hear any version of it again. And yes, I know that song belongs in the "pop" category.

You should pay attention when you read.

By the way, it was rude of you to ask "What are you listening with?" --Jean

I'm guessing quite a few people have recorded Bill Withers' "Lean on Me." Probably some good recordings of it.....but I heard one a year or so ago on the radio that really bugged me.

I don't know who it is. It's got a driving beat behind it (hip hop maybe???), and the singing is okay (not too expressive)....but they missed a vital chord change. It's almost a one-chord-samba. And in some spots they changed the chord, but left the bass note where it was, and it clashed. Seemed really ignorant to me, and ruined the song.

As much as I like Elvis, his version of that terrible Beatles song Hey Jude is a toe curler.
Also Eddie Arnold's Make the World Go Away given Elvis' treatment
Similarly The Everly Brothers take of A Whiter Shade of Pale.

Absolutely anything Shatner covered. I sing tons of karaoke, which I know "Real" artists look down on, but with my memory, it is the only way I can get on stage and perform and get applause, which is like the best drug ever. There are songs I won't ever try, not because I lack the confidence, but because I believe they sound too good when the original singers do them. I had a real agent in Knoxville try to hire me to do all Willie songs on the road. Said he would put together a band and guarantee me bookings. I told him I will do Willie a lot karaoke, but only Willie should do himself on the road. I also couldn't remember enough of the lyrics to do that but didn't tell him that.
