Seems like every time I watch something on TV, I see an ad for some broadway musical based on some artists music.

Lets see, We had Springsteen on Broadway which was ACTUALLY him, not an actor, (Couldnt get tickets, they were going for 700 bucks, but even so, famous people couldnt even get them)

Summer: The Donna Summer Musical

The Cher Show

BEAUTIFUL The Carole King Musical on Broadway

Billy Joel's Movin' Out

David Byrnes Utopia

Just saw an ad for Alanis Morrisette.... lol, Jagged Little Pill musical

I think Foreigner had Juke Box Hero or its coming....

They must make money but they all seem to be coming at same time.

It's called MONEY. All entertainment comes in trends and waves. When one is successful, they are followed up by dozens. Have a "Survivor" television show, and you have 20 more of people on desolated places eating bugs. Have a Super Hero movie and there are 20 more. Hear one song on the radio that is a huge hit and you get a dozen similar songs.
Broadway has been like that too. Whether it is mining the 19th century novels for LES MISERABLES, and THE PHANTOM, now you get musicals based upon former rock stars or in the case of MAMA MIA or ROCK OF AGES, you will get several music based on some certin artists. The interesting thing is that most all of them have been in production for years before actually being released to the public.

And this is the thing about all music, plays, television, movies, they have multiple productions going on ALL THE TIME. Broadway probably has hundreds of plays done a year that close the day they open. Thousands of television pilots are done a year with a very very few actually going very far. Millions of books, scripts, are written a year with very very few every getting past the page.

You're just witessing a very normal element of Broadway. A natural cycle. And at the same time, among the "HINTERLANDS" there are hundreds of more being tried out and tested. You're just seeing the current crop.

shows featuring most of those MAB has mentioned and very popular

most selling out weeks before the tours start


Yes The Springsteen Stage Show was a Great Success in the USA



VINYL records are creating new interest , with more and more Top Singers

the like of ADELE are putting out Albums and 45 singles in Vinyl

If any ones got any of those Auto Change Record Players they put out

in the sixty's and seventy's in good condition they are worth a lot of money

Also the Big Supermarket Chains have these in their Audio Section


One of the most important principles of songwriting is to remember that a good song is a partnership of many different components, all working together to produce a satisfying musical experience.

In that respect, song components are either enhancing or compromising their combined effects.

Yes,Vinyl is making a comeback, Garth Brooks just PRE-SOLD a MILLION copies of his new "Legacy" album on vinyl Vinyl pressing plants are back in action, the one in Nashville, which was the only one left, dobuled it's size and that is really cool. And artists LOVE to have their product on vinyl, because it's what a lot of people grew up with. So it is a really cool thing.

But....

Unfortunately there is always a "BUT". I wouldnt look for it to make a total comeback for vinyl. Those tend to be more for collectors and audiophiiles. There are a lot of those, for sure, but younger people, now under 30 have never really experienced vinyl (believe me, I've got a pretty funny experience and song out of that one) and they want things for conveince, going directly to their phone and computers, and home or car listening devices ("HELLO ALEXIA ,PLAY...."), and they also don't really want to OWN much as much as stream it, listen to it and have that instantly and endlessly. For a smaller artist, carrying around an extra 50-100 pounds of weight that albums do, with you, taking up the space and especially if they are fly dates, is a difficult sell. But it is a cool thing that happens and if I can make it affordable, I'd like to have my own vinyl album. Be a cool thing to have. At least you could see the pictures and read the liner notes without a magnifying glass!

There is another aspect that speaks both to the Musicals and the vinyl.

NOSTALGIA.

Each generation that comes, gets into their middle ages, late 30's to 60's and start pining for their early days. And those are usually in 20-40 year increments. One of the greatest television sitcoms, THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, was actually done in the 60's, but it was actually portraying life in the 30's. That was Andy Griffith's comments himself. In the 70's, shows like HAPPY DAYS, LAVURNE AND SHIRLY, movies like AMERICAN GRAFFITTI, musical groups like SHA NA NA were throw backs to the 50's. It's always about remembering the past.

Right now there is a huge late 70's 80's trends. If you listen to car commericals, health and insurance commercials, drug commercials, etc. they have songs from the 70's and 80's. So it would stand to reason that the musical theater, would be featruing music from the 80's like Springsteen, Billy Joel, Elton John, etc.in their plays. Two of this years biggest movie block busters were BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (QUEEN) and ROCKET MAN (Elton). Some of the biggest bands of the 70's and 80's THE EAGLES, ELTON, BILLY JOEL, etc. are the largest arena draws.

And even in the more interesting note, TRIBUTE BANDS are the biggest draws and for the musicians, money makers. HUGE BUISNESS is being done by LED ZEPPLIN, BEATLES, ROLLING STONES, EAGLES, FLEETWOOD MAC tribute bands. There are bands that take one album, say HOTEL CALIFORNIA, and play it note by note. In Nashvlle there are dozens of them, and they pack huge rooms. Many of my friends are in them. I was in a LITTLE FEAT tribute band and currently a few times a year play in an 11 pielce horn band, that plays the songs of BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS, CHICAGO, IDES OF MARCH (one of my co-wriers in that and I just got a cut on their 55th anniversery CD) when we play, we pack out the festivals and outdoor shows. It's a hoot, especially since some of the music I write is a throwback to the 70's sounds of MOTOWN and STAX RECORDS.

An interesting note on those, is that people can go see them, and experience the music from their favorite eras, at half the price of the "real things" (which are usually only one or two original members and a compliment of sidemen.) so you can pay $50 instead of $500, to hear a very close look and sound alike of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. And hear the bands do your favorite album, or band, note for note, just like your record, with the excitement, lights ,sound and SPECIAL EFFECTS of a live concert. These productions are almost as intricate as the "real thing." One of the PINK FLOYD tribute bands, has more in light, lasers and sound equipment as the actual band did in the 70's.

So this nostalgia affects all we do. When people get in their middle ages, they have more disposable income they can spend on products, movies, and musicals.

So that is why you are seeing such a huge impact on culture in your various questions and comments.

I honestly have been touting the idea that Vinyl has value, Digital music doesnt, since the very begining. I first thought about the ole business principle, "if you can hold it in your hand, it's real" and you never could with MP3's. Which is why people dont want to pay for it.

At Barnes @ Nobel, They have a circle of vinyl. It's mostly classic stuff. Eagles, Led Zep, but there is a nostalgia in VInyl. I remember going to record conventions. I bought the single of the Stones "Shattered" it was apparently a rarer single. I went home to play it, and my dad says "You paid 8 dollars for a .99 single" and your going to play it, scratch it up? lol, ahh stop with that logic stuff dad....

If you have mint condition vinyl records, especially stuff still in the original packaging, its worth money. But by playing it, you decrease its value.

There are alot of artists who are releasing stuff ONLY on vinyl, hoping the nostalgia of vinyl helps sell the record.

Yes, there has been a resurgence in Vinyl, no doubt. Again, I'd love to have one of my projects on Vinyl and may do it if I can do a short run. Hauling those things around, having them damaged due to heat or getting warped is a bit of a pain. But they are very cool. I have a pretty huge record collection but don't even have a working turntable. I do love it though.


There is a term for Nostalgia that is used in advertising and music business. "AIR OF FAMILIARITY." It means a nod to a certain nostalgic or homage to an era, individuals, etc. We've had a few over the past few years that illustrate.

A few years back, rock star (and Nashville resident) KID ROCK came out with a huge summer song called "SINGING SWEET HOME ALABAMA ALL SUMMER LONG" It used direct chord structure, keyboard and guitar lines from two distinct 70's songs, "SWEET HOME ALABAMA, from Lynyrd Skynyrd" , and "WEREWOLVES OF LONDON" by Warren Zevon. He actually incorporated very signature parts of those two songs to do his narrative about growing up, going to lakes and hanging out with women and on the radio, those two songs being played all the time. In a totally class move (and to keep himself out of copyright violations) he included Rossington, Colins, and Ed King, who wrote "Sweet Home" and Zevon, who wrote "WEREWOLVES" in his song. I've seen some video of him onstage with Skynyrd doing the song with them playing along. Brilliant coup.

Country artist "Brad Paisley" did the same thing with "LISTENING TO OLD ALABAMA" which featured members of the Country mega band ALABAMA on the record and in the video. And it was a big reason that band reformed after retiring. Health issues has gotten them off the road, but it was cool seeing them back again.

Advertising utilizes this technique quite well. There was a FORD TRUCK commercial on not to long ago, that I seemed to see every freaking hour. (My television is on nearly 24 hours a day). But it used this great. The commercial started off with one truck, and the music of Jerry Reed, and his huge hit from 1979, "EAST BOUND AND DOWN" written by Dick Feller (a friend of mine). As the camera pulls back, you see tens, twenty, thirty trucks in a longer and longer shot. There are also all kinds of other 70's references, a huge SHONEYS BIG BOY statue being hauled by one of the trucks and 70's era iconic things.

The reason for this is simple. The song, was a huge hit but also the theme song of the 1979 movie SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT starring MALE KING OF THE WORLD AT THAT TIME BURT REYNOLDS.It was everywhere at that time! Burt was voted "SEXIEST MAN ALIVE" by PEOPLE magazine and was on all the talk shows. Jackie Gleason, who was an "over the hill celebrity," suddenly was everywhere. And there were two sequels. They sold hundreds of thousands of black Pontiac Trans Ams;' which was the car he drove in that movie. It was a merchandising BONANZA.

Well who would be a target for that commecial?
ANY MALE ABOUT THE AGE OF LATE 40's TO THEIR MID 60'S. Because those guys (AND AT 61 I AM ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THEM!!!) were in high school or college at that time and went to see that movie several times. Now who are the targets for that truck and similar products?

THOSE SAME GUYS NOW WHO COULD AFFORD THOSE TRUCKS!!!!!

BOOM!!! AIR OF FAMILIARITY!! We have a connection to the original products, music, and the era. It was our YOUTH!!! And everyone wants to recreate their youth!

So that is how all of this works. RE-booted televsion series, re-booted hollywood movies, recycled ideas , artists and songs, television shows like MAD MEN that immortalize those eras!!!!

What's old is new again. Well, you'll have to excuse me. I've got to go drag out my old 8 tracks and see if I can find that Three Dog Night CAPTURED LIVE AT THE FORUM" from 1969! LOVE THOSE GUYS!!!!

What do those LP retail for? I have several LPs that I released back when cassettes were taking over the market. Needless to say, I sold out of cassettes but got stuck with hundreds of LPs that didn't sell. Maybe now I could sell them. LOL

The ones I have seen have been about $18.99. Around $20 for some, although if you are talking classic vinyl it is what they are asking for it. If you had a huge following years ago that clamor for your product on vinyl, yes you could sell those now. That is the thing people have to remember about all of this. There has to be an "AUDIENCE CLAMORING FOR YOUR PRODUCT." The vast majority of vinyl sold are classic records from past eras, up until the 80's, or the new artists that are releasing vinyl have large audiences. For anyone else, just having a vinyl record doesn't nessasarily mean they are going to sell. Just like having all those cassettes. I still have a few too, just finally got a few of my first songs transferred from those. That's a pain in the butt too.

When you ask what "LP's" sell for? Whatever they can get for them.
