No Order....

Famousish...

Mark Knopfler, Known as a guitar Virtuoso, but what a great songwriter, listen to his solo stuff.

Suzzane Vega. All I knew was Luka and Toms Diner, but one day I was in Barnes and Noble and her greatest hits came on. I was amazed how she can stop you in your tracks and make you listen. Knows how to hook a listener.

Not So famous...

Willie Nile. He had an acclaimed album in the early 80's, disappeared completely due to some health problems. Resurfaced in the 2000's. Put together 5 Consecutive albums that to me rival any 5 consecutive albums in the history of music. He tailed off in his last few, but hey were all human. Ask Most people, Willie Who? He basicly has a piece of everything you have ever heard since Buddy Holly but yet hes original
Have a listen to some great stuff.

I heard Aime Mann's album @#%&*! Smilers at Barnes and Noble also. I started wondering if Barnes and Noble was the best place to hear music.

When I heard "Freeway", it knocked me completely out. That HOOK! The song had to be surgically removed from my brain to stop singing it, but it was a great quality hook, not a cheap annoying one.

Freeway - Wow a great song - thanks for the link. I have been out of the loop I guess. How did I miss this one. She's got attitude when she sings. I love it!!!!

Thanks for mentioning Knopfler, FD:

I first heard about him during an interview with Chet Atkins. They played a few songs together as well as melody only tunes during that interview. Wish I had been able to record that "session/interview" because it allowed me to compare the playing styles and to a lesser degree, the singing styles of these two Guitar Giants. (Chet didn't need to sing... but his vocals were not too shabby.)

By accident, I found a CD of a few Knopfler Songs with Emmylou Harris accompanying and his songwriting style is pretty darn unique. The guitar work and harmonies on this set were spectacular.

We live in a marveluous age.

All my best to all of you for a fantastic 2020! ----Dave

He is a master guitarist(although he claims he isnt), great finger picker, can play any style. Has his own unique style that nobody else sounds like. And I had heard of his country stuff too.

BUT, I mentioned him here cause of his songwriting. I had a chance to listen to Sailing to Philadelphia a while back for the first time. The title song is actually about two guys, Mason and Dixon, who are famous for the Mason-Dixon line, which I didnt know anything about them, i didnt know two guys had those names, till I heard the song. The track features James Taylor on vocals.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrLdKYRBOEE

Sailing to Philadelphia

I am Jeremiah Dixon
I am a Geordie boy
A glass of wine with you, sir
And the ladies I'll enjoy
All Durham and Northumberland
Is measured up by my own hand
It was my fate from birth
To make my mark upon the earth

He calls me Charlie Mason
A stargazer am I
It seems that I was born
To chart the evening sky
They'd cut me out for baking bread
But I had other dreams instead
This baker's boy from the west country
Would join the Royal Society

We are sailing to Philadelphia
A world away from the coaly Tyne
Sailing to Philadelphia
To draw the line
The Mason-Dixon Line

Now you're a good surveyor, Dixon
But I swear you'll make me mad
The West will kill us both
You gullible Geordie lad
You talk of liberty
How can America be free
A Geordie and a baker's boy
In the forests of the Iroquois

Hi FD:

No, there are a ton of under-rated songwriters living and deceased. My input would be less than meaningful.
Interesting topic, though!

That would be me... I think... 24 boxes away on a family tree chart that keeps changing. LOL! Willie is only a couple of years ahead of me, age wise. If only I had been wise enough to move to Lukenbach! Can't you just hear it... Willie, Waylon and Dave! Has a certain ring to it, eh?

Happy Holidays from West Mayberry! You should see the Christmas Garlands they strung across the Paluxy River Bridge. If that won't get you in the Christmas Spirit... nothing will.

Last night, during lulls in the action of the complete destruction of the Cowboys by the Bears, I watched "Miracle on 37th Avenue" (somewhere in New York City) an old movie that had been colorized and remade in parts, I think... but it made me sad about the day my best friend told me there was no Santa Claus! LOL!

Have yourself a great day and weekend.

I found there was no Santa when I found the gifts I asked for in my parents closet a week before christmas...lol. I was looking for an old pair of sneakers and found out who'd been providing the gifts and eating the chocolate chip cookies. Oddly, I laughed, wasn't hurt at all, it made me laugh how gullable I was.

Dallas are too talented to be that bad. Id say Garret wont be coaching there next year.

Nobody has lol. He's becoming a big fish in the small pond of NYC, he along with James Maddock and probably the biggest fish in NY Willie Nile. At least in the rock...singer songwriter world. Im sure there are hip hop and rappers making names for themselves in NYC too. As well as Blues and Jazz cats.
