https://soundcloud.com/michael-zaneski/liberals-crawled-out-of-the-ocean-1/s-oaGr4So I read this article Mark Kaufman posted in another thread.. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-genes-of-left-and-right/It postulates that there's a conservative brain and a liberal brain and that our political leanings may be more "nature" than "nurture" and that the formation of these brains date back thousands of years.. ..and then Randy Newman and John Prine started singing this to me in my brain and so I knocked this off in short order...meant to be taken in the same fanciful, humorous style of "Jesus: The Missing Years" by John Prine...just a little bi-partisan fun.. No donkeys or elephants were harmed in the making of this recording. Apologies to Richard Strauss. ***************************************************************************************************************** Liberals Crawled Out of the Ocean (spoken intro) we're punching chads for who we like but wait, could be more to it studies show that it's our genes that make us wanna do it all that raw ancestral stuff in our genes and limbic brains scientific studies show that it's a hellbound train going back in time, back to the primordial slime....to when.. CH liberals crawled out of the ocean conservatives crawled out of the sea and they've been going at it for a long, long time going at it since the dawn of history V1 liberals, out of the big blue ocean said let's abolish billy clubs and rocks then conservatives beat the crap out of them bringing on the very first peace talks V2 out of a stormy seas crawled the conservatives booby trapped their caves, drank lots of tea said stay off our sweet land or we will club you we really just want you to leave us be..cuz CH liberals were throwing bones sky high slow motion conservatives were humans God put in a Garden 10,000 years ago..(could be) and they've been going at it for a long, long time going at it since the dawn of history (Instrumental) V3 and though tens of thousands of years have gone by nothing's really changed, just scenery as I stand here ready to..punch a chad some ancient voice in the back of my head says "yes on 23" ..cuz CH liberals crawled out of the ocean conservatives crawled out of the sea and they've been going at it for a long, long time they've been going at it they've been going at it since the dawn of history

I love it. Definitely channeling Randy Newman here. Vocal is great and the sound effects are fantastic.
I'm not entirely sure about these lines: liberals were throwing bones sky high slow motion conservatives were humans God put in a Garden 10,000 years ago..(could be)
I had to think for a while about what you meant by the first line. Is it that liberals, as believers in evolution, see their ancestors devouring woolly mammoths or something and throwing the bones in the air? The second line is obviously too long and has to be squeezed into the melody. This is really clever on reflection as a play on the mental contortions required to square the literal creation story with evidence of a long evolutionary process. My question is, will that be lost on most casual listeners, does it matter, or am I reading more into it than is there?
PLEASE, nobody take that last paragraph of mine as an invitation to pile in with arguments about creation vs evolution. It should be possible to comment on the merits of a song without having to rehash those arguments here. For me this song works beautifully as a song, not an argument, and I am interested in knowing if I got those lines right. That's all.

What a hoot, Mike! Loved the sound effects and the lyrics. Very cool how you brought in those classical musical elements.
Gavin, I believe throwing the bones in the air is a reference to the beginning of the movie 2001 and the theme song Also Sprach Zarathustra.
Brilliant!

For me this song works beautifully as a song, not an argument, and I am interested in knowing if I got those lines right. That's all. Hi Gavin, Thanks, friend. I'm really glad you like it. My aim was to bring both sides together for a fleeting moment or two. Yes, the "bones sky high slow motion" is tied to Also Sprach Zarathustra which is tied to 2001 and specifically the first segment which to me holds some of the most salient images of Early Man, and I imagined for most baby boomers, at least. The "bones sky high slow motion" line simply replaces the ocean image in the second chorus and the singer intended nothing more than a variation of that thought. And the next line was the proper place for the Creationist line, as the second chorus was intended to break up the monotony a bit and offer an "alternative" POV on where man came from. The singer himself isn't sure. He's hedging his bets. After comments by Tony, I knew I wanted the Creationist POV in the song, and I knew I could only give it one line, so knew that there would be some enjambment there, but in a satirical song I think that is welcome. At least in this song, my singer is an un-trustrowrthy or flawed narrator. He has taken 24 bit information and his mind can only process it in 8 bits, so he has missed the point of the article and has literalized most of its ideas, or amplified some of the ideas while discarding the rest. This felt like a way "in" to the material, rather than "owning" it. You tend to "own" the ideas you present in your satirical songs. For this song, it felt like my singer should have misread the ideas somewhat. This works to also poke fun at the science, or at least any attempt to create clickbait style headlines from that science, which is bound to happen, and the singer (perhaps) is so used to National Enquirer style stuff that he read the Scientific American article and immediately his brain bit-reduced the ideas to the song's title, which resembles a National Enquirer headline. And yes, this is not unlike what Randy Newman does when he creates flawed characters. It makes me happy you thought that comparison apt, that's one of the things I was aiming for, Thanks again, Mike PS.......2001: A Space Odyssey can be a bit of a slog, especially if you've seen other Kubrick movies that came out after Dr. Strangelove and found them slogs...best to approach it in a meditative state..

Fearing the worst... I clicked on your song-post, Mike:
As I usually do, I read the lyric first... then again... then again... and wondered? How's he going to pull this thing off? I listened intently to the intro, amazed at the sound effects and spooky sounding voice... and then I was just amazed at how you put everything together... without showing favor to either side... at least to my way of interpretation.
Thanks for the early afternoon entertainment. A gem for sure. Creativity has no bounds when Zaneski gets his fertile brain wrapped around something.
Enjoyed, my friend, ----Dave

Hi Mike, Ha! Well there you go. You managed to share some fun with this thing called politics. And you dare to make us all smile! Amazing what you combine together to create this....! Great sound effects...creativity...vocal delivery. Sounds like you had a blast creating and delivering this. I like the union elephants...lol...or were they non-union? We can all use more humor in the world! Kristi

Hi Tony, Thanks for listening.. Ha! 23.....I wrote "scenery" ahead of "yes on __" so it was the first rhyming 3 syllable number that came to mind. Then I remembered it seems to have a lot of "back story", much of it arcane. There's a Jim Carrey movie where he's obsessed with the number (haven't seen it) --and it's my favorite Psalm. Thanks again, Mike

Gavin,
I realize that I didn't really explain where the bone throwing image came from.
It's the crucial connecting scene between the first part of 2001 (prehistoric) and the second part (modern) and in the first part, the apes have discovered that they can re-purpose bones by weaponizing them (if I'm remembering correctly--been over a decade) and the toss into the air is kind of celebratory, and Kubrick then intercuts the space ship with the bone as it's in midair--if memory serves..and it's a great moment..probably the most memorable sequence in the movie, next to the psychedelic ending..
Mike

MIke,
I’ll stay away from the politics . . . as i tend to do . . . and just stay on the tune, which is very clever, wonderfully produced (love the supporting background sounds). And really a killer hook. I somewhat lean towards Gavin’s view in that the first two lines of the second chorus might be a tad too obscure for most folks and a mouthful (respectively) . . . though I fully appreciate the intended reference. I think those lines might resonate with a more accessible image. The only other small nit . . . the use of “billy clubs” in V1 and “club you” in V2 maybe too repetitive—but that’s just a personal preference.
Terrific stuff, Mike. Politics aside, yes, a very Randy Newman like take deservingly poking both the donkey and elephant.
All the best,
Deej

Ricki Thanks, Ricki! I realize now that second chorus only works if 2001: A Space Odyssey has created as dominant image in our minds as I imagined it had. I can imagine with generations x, y, and z the image may be lost on them.. Yeah, I spent more time on the Also Sprach "mock up" than anything else. and thank goodness I didn't need the big finish, LOL... I might still create "Also Sprach Zoothustra" ....using a whole zoo of animal sounds. Need to see if I can find any ready made animal sound virtual instruments on the market. Thanks again, Mike

Enjoyed, my friend, ----Dave Hi Michael ... Dave said exactly what I was thinking. That intro was quite elaborate and a great surprise ... lots of hard work had to go into that. Your efforts paid off handsomely. The whole song was a real riot! I don't laugh out loud very often, but this one caused that event several times. Politically, I tend to lean slightly one way but don't flaunt it. One vote is stronger than all the rants in the world. Again, great work! Wishing you the very best ... Alan

Fun song, why does that sound like Mark Kaufmann singing?
For the record, genes cause propensities and tendencies but they dont always go that way. Trump was once a Democrat.
Good production, i'm surprised nobody has complained about the conservatives beating the crap out of the liberals line.....

Michael,
Wow, every radio station in the country should be playing this one. In the old days most AM radio stations that played popular music had times set aside for "comedy spots," and this would have been a big hit in that time slot IMO. Our world then had the same passionate differences politically, but with more respect for one another and much less hate--Damn, I miss the mid 60's radio stations and vanilla reporting! Kudos for you for creating some "fun" of everyone!
Very creative sound effects and a riot, or should I say a gas, or maybe just plain bananas? Actually fun-clever fits best. Hey, I really loved this, and perhaps "everyone" could benefit a bit from of your political humor----left, right, middle/left, middle, middle/right, or confused..........There is a saying that "laughter is the best medicine........"
Thanks for the humorous, clever, and musically enjoyable tune!

I worried that I was stuck with a "clickbait" title.. And though the "singer" gets the science wrong (early man belonging to political parties? LOL..) his heart is in the right place.and he sees it as an eternal but benign struggle. Thanks again, Mike

Yeah, I think I said, "those elephants aren't union" cuz I was thinking about the British music scene and specifically how Scott Walker (who I was channeling vocally) could only use union musicians in the Sixties and early Seventies, as this was apparently the way things generally were, there. So that gag will probably go over better there than here, LOL.. In regards to humor, I agree, Life sometimes can suck all the humor out of us..but humor is so important to staying mentally healthy--to be able to laugh and not take things too seriously.. Thanks again! Mike

Deej Hi Deej, I may do a version 2.0 at a later date with a bridge, and in that bridge I can put the Creationist idea. Maybe do it like a "news bulletin" ie, "this just in.." I'm okay with clubs used twice cuz I used it as a verb once and a noun once, so it forms different mental images and is less a songwriting nono than if I used the noun or verb "club" twice.. It makes me very happy to know you enjoyed it. Mike

Fun song, why does that sound like Mark Kaufmann singing?
For the record, genes cause propensities and tendencies but they dont always go that way. Trump was once a Democrat.
Good production, i'm surprised nobody has complained about the conservatives beating the crap out of the liberals line.....
Hi FD, Thanks for listening. It sounds like Mark to you? I was channeling Scott Walker who had a kind of lounge-y voice, but used it in sometimes strange musical settings. I'm glad you thought the production good--it was done in a fury and I usually relax more when I work, but was doing this in my free time. That line you mention is like the 4th panel in a "Far Side" Gary Larson cartoon. It's the punch line (ha! literally!) and I was hoping the humor would offset any potential negativity..and it seems to have done just that.. Thanks again, Mike

Michael,
Wow, every radio station in the country should be playing this one.
Thanks for the humorous, clever, and musically enjoyable tune!
steady-eddie Eddie! Wow! Thank you.. I miss Sixties radio, too. That was the funnest thing in the new Tarentino movie "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" which featured the radio station I had glued to my ear from 1970 to 1972 and that would be 93 KHJ..and I used to go by their station and get their top 30 list every week and remember all those fun Dickie Goodman novelty songs where he's interviewing someone, and the answers came in the form of recorded song bits. Him, Ray Stevens, The Dr. Demento show..I was a fan of novelty songs and still am... It makes me really happy to know you enjoyed it, Eddie. Thanks again. Mike

What a hoot, Mike! Loved the sound effects and the lyrics. Very cool how you brought in those classical musical elements.
Gavin, I believe throwing the bones in the air is a reference to the beginning of the movie 2001 and the theme song Also Sprach Zarathustra.
Brilliant!
Thanks again, Mike I definitely want to hear "Also Sparach Zoothustra." It would be a hoot! (or a howl or a whinny or whatever) Hi Gavin, Unfortunately, I'd have to cobble the "instruments" together myself, as no one has seen fit to create any animal instruments. You'd think at least you could spend thirty bucks and have a singing cat or dog that played on your midi keyboard..if I owned a Nagra, I already live in the city with the best zoo.. You mentioned the "throwing bones sky high slow motion" line would maybe work with an accompanying video.. I got a funny bit for that..in a potential video..I have the ape throw a bone up exactly like in the movie, only instead of it morphing into the space ship, the camera sticks to the ape, shows him putting his hands together and raising them over his head, like a modern "victory" gesture--just acting all happy..then the bone falls back to earth, hitting him in the head, at which point the apes eyes cross and does a little pirouette before passing out. I was reading about 2001..It turns out the guy that played that ape was a British actor named Dan Richter, who was a drug addict, who took a speedball of cocaine and heroine seven times a day..publicly, and ALL TOTALLY LEGAL! https://www.history.com/news/making-2001-a-space-odysseyThanks again, Mike

Hi Mike Enjoyed this one. It really shows how much work you put into it I esp liked the vocals and the chord progs though a lot of the lyrics went over my head being a dumb canuck Paul Hi Paul, Glad you enjoyed it.. 2/3 of my favorite songwriters are/were Canadian..Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen.. Thanks! Mike
