This is old news I know. I'm not a "star", but I've done O.K for myself. I've been able to make a living in this insane business for 30 years. Got my quarterly royalty statement from BMI. My catalog of 6 albums is on every Touch tunes juke box in the world, I'm on every streaming service known to man {Pandora, Spotify, I-Heart radio ect} I've had songs placed in NUMEROUS T.V shows, commercials, and yes, MOVIES all over the world, I get radio airplay all over the world. My BMI statement of my plays world wide this quarter was SEVEN PAGES LONG! My net? $30.20. You read that correctly. We now have more outlets than ever before for independents to showcase our music, but the royalty rates are CRIMINAL! And my royalty rates are no different than say, Paul McCartney. It seems that these streaming "services" and music libraries are making a fortune off of the artists that provide the material to their existence. They run million dollar companies while we the artists get paid slave wages while they sit in the "big house". I wish I had an answer for this, and I'm sure it's been put out there before many times but it still SUCKS! Rant over.

Bottom line is we artists are being RAPED, plain and simple, and we're on our third generation of "consumers" that believe music should be "free!"

Am not in the business, just a hobbyist.

From everything that I read, the actual music does not provide the payoff, but only leads to the payoff, which is concert sales and merchandizing.

As far as music libraries, most use the 50/50 spilt (on both licensing fees & royalties). I think thatís reasonable. I certainly donít want to do the business involved of placing my own music. I want to spend most my time composing. A larger problem is getting clients to send cue sheets in to your PRO. Tunsat estimates that 80% of cue sheets aren't turned in.

I've often wondered about that John... How do you go about finding who needs a particular song about a particular subject in a particular genre? Seems to me that would make things a lot easier.....

Often the client will do searches in a music library. That's why the title of the track is so important. You should always have at least one descriptive word in the title, like "Mysterious Night" - if a client is looking for mysterious music, this title would be more likely to show up.

This may be a pipe dream, but what if there were a streaming service created by musicians and songwriters, for musicians and songwriters? l
A co-op streaming service ike framers have co-ops to keep food processors from screwing them over too badly.

musicians would decide on a decent fair royalty rate, and peg the fee charged to consumers based on what would pay the royalties and operating costs.

This is the hard part, musicians would have to commit to licensing their songs (or some set portion of their songs) to be ONLY available on the co-op streaming service. if a musicians/songwriters commited to say 10% of their songs would only be on the co-op service. if the service gets off the ground, they may end up making more on their 10% co-op songs than the rest.

i'm going to show my ignorance by asking...
what do streaming services pay per listen or per download of a song?
what would be a fair royalty rate per listen or per download of a song?

Here's a good video about how much the various streaming services pay.

I feel your pain, Bob:

ASCAP has left songwriters in the lurch by supporting all this streaming BS. I've got a "stream" for them but would not provide it in polite society... LOL!

You are one tough cookie and I am proud of you. The music biz is now more of a jungle than ever before and little people don't have much of a chance. On the flip side, our talented composer, JLS has appeared to do quite well via music licensing with some of the better Music Libraries.

Soldier on... brave warriors. If nothing else, we have a great hobby.

Yeah, I had a couple hundred thousand spins on terrestrial radio in South America, I think i made $2 that year. But, it's always been that way, it takes billions of spins on thousands of stations world wide, a bona fide hit song, just to make a living.

It still amazes me all the detail in my ASCAP statements. They include all the TV replays. Also there are surprises I knew nothing about. This month's statement included 28 commercial royalties (thought ASCAP didn't cover commercials). Anyway, it must take many man-hours to do all that computing. I'm satisfied with the way they handle TV/ film performances. I imagine computing billions of radio spins is another story.
