With all the arguing going on over on the General Discussion forum in response to Couchgrouch's satire about climate change, some folks have suggested that it creates a toxic environment. Maybe it does, but it did inspire this creation, which may or may not be a good thing LOL. It does have one benefit though. Instead of getting involved in those arguments, I can just refer people to the song, saving myself and them a lot of time . And folks (you know who you are), if I think you're crazy doesn't mean I don't like you. https://soundcloud.com/themysteriousbeings/i-give-upNow I've got that out of my system, I can get back to writing about love, heartbreak and anthropomorphized animals. As usual, I suggest listening to get the whole vibe of the song, rather than reading the lyric, especially as there are some improvised spoken parts that are not actually in the lyric, but here it is.... I GIVE UP (Words & Music by Gavin Sinclair) I went into a bar last night Just to have a quiet beer but This guy who was sitting there next to me Well, he wouldn’t stop bending my ear about How global warming was a pack of lies His face was turning quite red "A socialist conspiracy, open your eyes" I didn't - I rolled them instead And said... I give up, I just give up No point in explaining, it'll bounce off your brain and I could do it all again until I go insane and It isn't worth the pain, and that's why I'm saying I give up. I just give up. He said, "I didn't evolve from no monkey You gotta be kidding." I said, "You might have a point there, friend It's clear that you never did," and He seemed happy that he'd won and I thought he might be done But no, I could not have been wronger Six thousand years the earth has been here But I’d swear he’d been talking for longer I give up, I just give up No point in explaining, it'll bounce off your brain and I could do it all again until I go insane and It isn't worth the pain, and that's why I'm saying I give up. I just give up. Send the Mexicans home. It'll stop all the raping Just not Jose till he’s finished landscaping My yard. If he goes near her, you can bet, my wife’ll Shoot his ass with one of her rifles Healthcare - another socialist plot Best president in history's the one we've got No political correctness back in my day And folks didn't walk around being gay Religion in schools was fine if it was mine And we knew what to do with your kind I started to speak but he took off his shoes Put them over his ears, all his buddies did too And shouted "Fake News" Oh, I give up I give up, I just give up No point in explaining, it'll bounce off your brain and I could do it all again until I go insane and It isn't worth the pain, and that's why I'm saying I give up. I just give up.

Still laughing, Gavin:
You are one gifted writer... and might I add... a pretty darn good singer. Thanks for "letting it all hang out!" I don't think I've ever had anyone write a song for me before!

Extinction is imminent!! The last thing to fret about is a toxic environment on a website. Drop that burger and start making your own straws from compost!
Gavin, "current event" songs and lyrics were a staple on JPF fifteen years ago. This would've fit right in.
I've gotta get back outside. Beautiful Fall afternoon with average temps. I'm almost done sanding my back porch. Then I'm gonna have a roast beef sammich.
Extinction is imminent!! Maybe Alec and Hilaria will let po' childless AOC adopt one of their rugrats.

That was funny as heck, Gavin! And very well sung and played. As Couch said, about 15 years or so back, the forum was filled with political/social/religious offerings that often got a bit heated. I don't get into many of those discussions, regardless of which side I'm on. My single vote carries more weight than anyone's rant!
Totally loved this! Wishing you the very best ...
Alan

Yer pal, ----Dave Written for you, Dave? Was that you sitting at the bar next to me? No, wait, it was Couchgrouch. I didn't recognize him because he was disguised as Barstoolgrouch. Thanks for the kind words. If we can't feel strongly about things and still be pals, then we're in trouble. That doesn't change the fact that if you disagree with me you are obviously wrong. It's the very definition of wrongness LOL.

I mean no offense at all, Gavin, but I would never listen to a song like that or finish the lyric. There are/were hundreds of them on the internet. Write a song with a hook, a structure, a meter and an original theme( or an old theme spun a new way) and I'm there. In a sense, this is a critique. Do with it what you will.

Well, that is the most heavy-handedly disingenuous piece of condescension I've seen in a long time. A "critique" based on being above listening or even reading the lyric? I think I'll frame it.

Alan Thanks Alan. Glad you enjoyed it. Just a bit of fun and maybe a bit of therapy too I tend to get drawn into those discussions too much. Far better to write a song.

Gavin, This is my favorite of yours. The phrasing is amazing and there's amazing rhymes here life wife'll/rifle. You've found the right balance of speaking/rapping and singing and so whatever pitchiness is there does not register in my brain cuz pitch exactitude is only a little important in the chorus, where you nail it.. One thing, though..I am not sure "rape" is necessary, even in the context you use it. Has any comedian ever been able to make the subject funny for even one joke? It's the only part I question in an otherwise brilliant outing for you. I am not sure if it's even considered a stereotype of them , as I checked through a few lists of Mexican stereotypes like this one: https://www.nationalstereotype.com/mexican-stereotypes/Anyway, at least I'm consistent. Loved it (mostly) Mike

Loved it (mostly) Mike High praise indeed, Mike (not that you think it's the best of my songs LOL, but all the other stuff you said). Thanks. The "it'll stop all the raping" line is a reference to Trump's famous inflammatory assertions that a large percentage of people coming to the USA from Mexico are rapists and, by extension, the acceptance of such claims by people like the guy at the bar here. It's exactly the kind of thing he'd believe and the fact that he believes it and speaks of it in such a casual manner discredits it, of course. Still, it's definitely a tricky thing to bring up for the reasons you mention. It's the hardest-hitting line in the song for sure. I'll see what feedback I get from others here and elsewhere. Thanks for raising it.

OMG I was not even aware Trump said that. What a horrible thing to have said..
Randy Newman would probably keep the line, edgy writer that he is..so I'm leaning that way now that you mention that..

Hi Gavin,
Just swinging by for a listen to see what's going on.
I don't take sides in politics because that is not my thing but writing a song about how you feel inside is my thing and you certainly have done this with your song; and with humor for good measure. Controversy makes a good song topic.
I love the title; my sentiments exactly!

Thanks for swinging by, Jane. I don't normally write "political" stuff, but I was provoked LOL. I have to stop now anyway because I said, "I give up."

Hehe - now that's funny I don't care who ya R I loved the chorus coming in behind the last verse like that. The lyrics are clever and vocals suit perfectly. 2 thumbs up from the Canadian judge Paul

I would never put my shoes over my ears... Lol With the right pair of shoes I think you'd look rather fetching. So that WAS you sitting next to me at the bar lol. This is a bit of a blast from the past. It was the title track of my first album, which was so wildly successful that I've never done another one
