Hi JP folks

This is a song I recorded myself, still learning production on my DAW - no bass or a good drum mix on this. I am not even close to what Mr. Mike does with my songs but "baby steps" for me is all one can expect.

Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks so much

Patience is a virtue
That hides inside a drawer
Sitting in my room
Something I ignore

Indifference lays beside me
While I try to sleep
Get up in the morning
It always follows me

I need to try some Human Kindness
Got to give it all Iíve got
I owe it to myself
And everybody else
Oh Human Kindness

I need to try some Human Kindness
Got to give it all Iíve got

When tragedy strikes others
I hide in my cave
Crouching in the dark
Why be so afraid?

Others need my help
When they are all alone
I must stop wasting time
And leave the safety of my home

I need to try some Human Kindness
Got to give it all Iíve got
I owe it to myself
And everybody else
Oh Human Kindness

I need to try some Human Kindness
Got to give it all Iíve got

Bridge or Verse change up

Oh Human Kindness
Come on out
I know you there
Show the world
That you care

Morning, Jane:

What a beautiful song. I am listening, reading the lyric and enjoying my coffee... does that qualify as multi-tasking?
The enlarged photo on soundcloud gives me an idea of the gear you are using... so you have no problems there. Is that an arranger keyboard? If not, it sure looks like one. I did not see the Mic but noticed what appears to be a controller box for one... or possibly a vocal harmonizer.

All this song needs is for the vocal to be at a little higher volume than the music. That can be done in two or more ways. First, set the volume for what appears to be a fantom mic a bit higher before you begin. Otherwise, use your editing software in the computer to raise the volume in your vocal line by line so as not to interfere with the individual instruments and music. Tinker with it in the editor you are using until it sounds like what you want to achieve. If you are using an arranger, you have several great options.

1. Record the melody until you are satisfied it is a good backing track. (turn off the mic and sing along) Then begin the recording session with your vocal on another track. Be sure to pre-adjust the volume on each of the keyboard's instruments selected before you do the backing track and move the pan-pot knobs so that each one is "aimed" at the imaginary director in the middle of the "orchestra or band."

2. If you want tons of practice, simply do the keyboard setup and record "live" for as many times as it takes to achieve the desired result. Sometimes I'll do 30 takes because when listening, I discover an anomaly or error, then I'll go back and do it all over again. Doing everything (music and vocal) onto one track, after the set-up I described earlier) allows you to have only one track. (It saves tons of steps in mix-down time.)

Got questions? Just ask. Very nice song. Don't let it go until you are completely happy with the way it sounds to you. When that happens, it will sound good to most of us... but remember, nobody has the same "wiring" and we all have different tastes in music and genres. This one is a treasure.

Regards, ----Dave

What a great song! I love the thing you do with your voice at the end of the first line of the chorus. I'm not sure that you've got it quite perfect yet. You seem to be swallowing it a little instead of letting yourself go, letting your voice rise. I'm not sure that I'm saying that right.

The lyric is great in my opinion. You could think about a play on words between "human kindness" and "humankind." Maybe just by replacing the repeated "Oh human kindness" at the end of the song with "Oh human kind." I'm not sure that it would be an improvement - it might just be getting cute for its own sake - but I thought I'd throw it out there smile

Hi Dave and Gavin,

I use a Focusrite 6i6 interface, Pro Tools 10, old condenser mic, and a Juno G Keyboard (used as a midi controller for my DAW)
I appreciate the listen and the advice. Mixing down the song, especially the vocals is an art form in itself and the only way to learn is to dig in and try. I roughly record my songs fast - but it takes so long to mix everything perfectly.

I am so glad you like the song, that is the important thing to me. This let's me know if I should go any further with the song.

I thought the vocal was way too loud in the mix. I'd love it to be a lot lower but I know technically I can't bury the vocal.

Yikes - ki-ind-ness- I agree - it is awkward to sing it that way. I do swallow my words when I sing (I am not a singer by any means) but I find doing several takes will get my vocals up to snuff eventually. I recently purchased a lite version of auto tune which in my opinion makes vocals sound out of pitch. Go figure. So I don't use any pitch correction when recording myself. I leave that up to Mike when I am ready for a serious production.

You might want to take a look at the Melodyne plug-in for pitch correction. It's pretty miraculous. Or leave it to Mike, of course smile

Looks like you took the link down from Soundcloud or it's just not working . . . but I did get to listen to a little of this a few days ago. I though it was really nicely done with a lot of potential. Definitely worth your continuing to work on it (or punting over to Mike to let him do what he does so well).

But I also wanted to stop in to encourage you to keep at it. My first track on JPF was a recording in Garage Band, single track (because I didn't know you could actually create separate tracks at that point), and recorded over my laptop mic. While I still have ton to learn, I'd like to think I've improved a bit from then . . . but it takes time, and it's a never ending learning process (or at least seemingly so for those of us still working 9 to 5).

Anyway, just a shout of support. You may not feel it, but I've already noticed your efforts getting better . . . so stay with it.

My best to you,

Hi Deej,

Thank you for trying to listen to the song again. I am at work in my studio right now trying to get the vocals down - Roy gave me a great idea for the bridge (so much better than my original bridge). - I will probably put it back up on Soundcloud shortly.

I appreciate your encouragement (oh I need that as I feel like giving up sometimes).
