Champagne Tipsy and Tequila Drunk

Some say there should’ve been no open bar
Some say I shouldn’t have been there at all
Hell, all of them are right,
And what should’ve been a happy night
Became a one-sided brawl

When I saw you smilin’ in that gorgeous gown
I said I can’t believe you married that clown

And then he was fool enough
He was tool enough
To throw the first punch
But I ducked, and hit him in the gut
With an uppercut
And that lightweight lost his lunch
Fightin’ me was risky
Cos he was champagne tipsy
But I was tequila drunk

And then there we were on Monday morning
Standin’ in that county courtroom
He had a neck brace on,
A coupla front teeth were gone
And so was your honeymoon

Judge said, “Son, what have you got to say for yourself”
I said, “Your Honor, I don’t wanna blame no one else

But he was fool enough
He was tool enough
To throw the first punch
But I ducked, and hit him in the gut
With an uppercut
And that lightweight lost his lunch
Fightin’ me was risky
Cos he was champagne tipsy
But I was tequila drunk
I was tequila drunk”

Well, that mean ole buzzard turned me loose
Cos he said I had a good excuse

YEAH, he was fool enough
He was tool enough
To throw the first punch
But I ducked, and hit him in the gut
With an uppercut
And that lightweight lost his lunch
Fightin’ me was risky
Cos he was champagne tipsy
But I was tequila drunk

Champagne tipsy and tequila drunk
Champagne tipsy and tequila drunk…

Couch/Mike,

I really enjoyed this--catchy lyrics that will want to be sang along with like Carrie Underwood's 2nd hit "Cheating song." No nits. Unique song, well crafted and great hook!

Grouch! Is that you? Man, I'm impressed! That chorus is pretty tight, great storytelling as usual. I would just try to cut a few syllables here n there but that’s just a matter of style. Good One! smile

Hey Robert....

Tune is really strong, super strong. I listened 4-5 times. The write and story line are great. Well crafted lyric, clever use of almost rhymes...

And the CHORUS is super strong. Not only is singable but the contrast from the Champagne Tipsy to Tequila drunk is awesome...Perfect TITLE

But you are really good, so I'm gonna lay out a couple things for your consideration if this is not in it's final form.

It says Final V1.3 so if this is done just forget everything I am about to say,....

But just a couple things that I heard and are personal preference in the vocal delivery on the Verses. Don't know if you hired a singer or sang this yourself

The verses are great lyrically, but some of the phrasing by the singer isn't as smoothe as the CHORUS. Became a one-sided brawl IMO should have just connected and phrased longer...The vocal stop in between the words IMO would be so much sweeter without it. Same thing with the phrasing on Neckbrace. IMO should have been continual. HE goes NECK-BRACE & it prevents it from "singing"...Actually most of the 2nd verse I would like to hear less starting and stopping between his words and sing right into the next word.

I guess it's a stylistic thing I hear & personally prefer...

Harmonies....Need some on the Pre-Chorus

I would also consider harmonies on lines 3 & 4 on each verse

Singer nails the Chorus, But the Harmonies that are on the Chorus currently IMO are not enough. It needs that high harmony. Robert, it really needs that high harmony.

One other thing: Also when the lead VOX sings "A coupla of front teeth were gone" it would sing way better simply saying "A coupla front teeth were gone"...He throws the "of" in there and it messes up the phrasing...I would lose the "of"

Great tune, & I know your high standards, but this is what I hear & those are my thoughts....

Great story song. The lyrics are compelling and the production and melody go great with them. Listened to this twice so far.

Thanks Eddie, Tony, Steve, Neil, and Jane..for listening and the nice comments. Ricki wrote some great music to Rob's fine lyric and it was really fun setting the music for it.

Steve, very nice to meet you! We might be neighbors in about 6-7 months.

I have to disagree with you, though, as to the verses vocal phrasing. Now granted, all my thoughts here are in hindsight as I tend to work intuitively. But I am a vocalist who pays a lot of attention to phrasing and generally practices legato phrasing most of the time. If you listen to my work with Travis, you'll notice many a long, fluid, legato line.

Anyway, I think I did this one more staccato, "punchy" style in these particular verses because here we have a song that is actual focused around an actual, physical "punch" --and if you notice, there's a staccato muted guitar in the right channel during the verses, horn stabs in all the choruses, etc. In hindsight, I think I was correct to intuitively break up words like neck and brace and making them punchy and not legato. It seems to organically follow from the lyric, outward, spilling over into the music and vocal phrasing.

Also, specifically about "neck" and "brace" --to make legato work for those words, the rhythm of those notes would've needed to be changed: "brace" would need to be sung sooner, on the upbeat of one instead of the downbeat of two. Holding "neeeeeck" the whole duration from beat one to beat two just sounds unnatural--at least to me. I liked the way the demo singer (Ricki) sang the verses and saw no need to change her melody--or the rhythm of her melody, rather.

Every little thing that makes a song is either contributing to the overall effect--or hindering, and I think it's prudent for me to defend a little bit of "punchy" phrasing in a song about a reflexive "punch" that the singer throws. I mean, if ever there was time to use punchy, non-legato singing, it would be in a song that revolves around a "punch" --or so goes my thought process.. smile

As to harmonies, there's 3 harmonies in the last two choruses. one doubles the lead vocal at the higher octave, then there's a harmony above that higher octave and a harmony below it. Honestly, singing too many 7ths in this song would be wrong (I did sing a few), this is not Crosby, Stills, and Nash, so if I were to sing another even HIGHER harmony, it would be doubling a lower harmony. And it would sound like the Beach-Boys cuz it would need to be falsetto.

Harmonies in other places is totally up to the writers. I put them where I thought they were needed, and they didn't seem to miss them in the initial feedback sessions. I am known for putting harmonies EVERYWHERE and actually did that work, but upon trying them out in verse two and in in the builds, felt they were wrong, there, taking away from the punch of the chorus harmonies.

It is impossible to please everyone. This is the one constant pattern I see, after making some 3-400 demos in the last 4-5 years, from where I sit, at my desktop. For me, it's my clients' opinions that has to matter most, and I'm sure you can understand that. smile

Mike

Great melody and the production is outstanding, as usual. The lyrics are clever and that's a really great hook. For me, it's kind of wasted in a song about someone who just behaves like a total jerk, gets in a fight and gets away with it. Without anything to like about the character, I don't really want to spend time in his company, and that interferes with my enjoyment of the song. With all its cleverness, it comes across as cold and mean.

But, I'll say it again - that's a really great hook smile

Mike,

It's all personal preference that's all, I don't have a pony in this race. It's a great tune, I just heard it differently.

Hit me up when you move here. Maybe we can collab.....

Well done folks.

Don't know what 'He was tool enough' means. is it a slang word for 'TALL'

I love the vocals.

Roy, twenty-five years ago, bands were trying hard to come up with decent names, and failing.

You had the fruit bands, Pumpkins, Lemon and Cranberries. Then you had the crotch bands, Bush, Hole and Tool.

Hope that helps. wink

Steve,

Sounds like a plan!

*********************************

Tony, thanks for making me smile, you surrealist, you. smile

**********************************

Gavin,

Thanks for the nice compliment. As for the main character being a jerk, I dunno. In my twenties and thirties, there were occasions when I got blind drunk and said things I regretted in the company of ex-girlfriends, so I can relate. What's the saying, "don't judge a man by his worse day?" Lucky for me, we're all still friends, and I've been sober over 11 years. smile

******************************

Thanks Roy!

"Tool" kinda came along in the Nineties, I believe. You know Ricky Gervais' character "David Brent" who was the "boss" in the 18 year old Brit comedy "The Office" ..? You could say he was a tool. Inflated ego and him thinking he's really cool, while everyone's laughing at him behind his back. Steve Carrell played that character in the States..

Not really friend.

And then he was fool enough
He was tool enough
To throw the first punch

for me, being a heathen from across the pond, or old age stops me comprehending it.

Are you saying in essence,

And then he was fool enough
his name was tool or he was in a band called tool.
To throw the first punch

or is it like saying, he was a member of a tough breed or group.

sorry to be dumb.

God Bless Roy

Hi Roy,

We three posted at the same time, so in case you missed my reply, here's my "take" on "tool":

"Tool" kinda came along in the Nineties, I believe. Maybe the band "Tool" was an influence, I don't know, but suddenly it became a slang word around that time.

It gets used more generically, too, to mean "dummy" or "jackass."

Mike

Roy, I’m pretty sure the word is used in the UK too. You must just be too nice for anyone to have used it in your presence.

Just checked and you are right..
--------------------------------
The most common use is to describe someone (usually a guy) who is too stupid to know he's being used (he is literally a tool for someone else). Probably the second most common use is for someone who's just an idiot or screw-up.

Its an age thing, I guess. Or maybe I already have a vast range of suitable words lol

Hey there JPF...sorry to be mostly absent lately. Life keeps getting in the way. :l

Thanks Steady-eddie, I had a blast working out the music with that chorus running through my head!

Tony, I don't believe we've met? Thanks for listening. I was impressed as well.

Hi Steve, thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks for weighing in, Neil.

Nice to meet you, JaneK. Keep listening on.

Mike, always a pleasure to turn these over to you and get them to such a high level.

Hey Gavin, not sure what to say...maybe for his next song, Couch can do a follow-up and give Mr Tequila what he deserves...or not! smile

Hi Roy, thanks for listening and glad to see you posting again. I believe wanker would also work. grin

Hey Rob, great explanation! grin Fun tune...thanks for letting me play with your words.
