meant as a spoken word piece...

Black Mirrors

I’d spit shined my Florsheim’s
And just finished flossin’
Had a two Trojan date with a stripper
At the Awesome Possum
Got a call from the Captain
Homicide on 10th and Van Ness
Take the hotel’s freight elevator
And don’t breathe a whisper to the press

I’d been gettin’ near my twenty
thinking’ of turnin’ in my badge
I was sicka calls like this
Pullin’ bodies from blood and piss
Talkin’ brokers off some Wall St. ledge
After that murder-suicide in Queens
Ol’ Joe ran for sheriff in New Hampshire
He said a shotgun treats a pregnant belly
Like a microwave treats a hamster
It’s always Zoloft zombies
Or cross-dressing jetsetters
Basement apartment loners
Or mama hating bedwetters
Or some drunk cleaning his gun
Next thing he knows he’s a slob on a slab
Cos guns n booze go together
Like mini-skirts and maxi-pads

I tried to ring my partner Charlie
But he didn’t answer his cell
So I hopped in my unmarked Ford
And headed for the hotel
Called my date and said
I had a few things to do
take the tassles off and I’d meet her
In our private booth around two

There were two rookies
In the room on the fourth floor
Ghost turds haunted a pair of boxers
Hung on the bathroom door
No one looked me in the eye
And soon I saw why
Charlie was nude and chained to the sink
With his own pair of cuffs
Crime seen tech poking a stab wound
With his latex gloves
Charlies toup was crooked
but the room wasn’t ransacked
The dresser had a box of White Owls
Some rubbers and a few Zantac
Charlie’d been my partner
Goin’ on fifteen years
And maybe all those mem’ries
Should’ve squeezed out a tear
Cos there are rumors here and there
‘bout how detached I am
But it takes a machine to catch a monster
That’d kill a man
So I just knelt by Charlie
And straightened his toupee
His eyes were black mirrors
Reflecting life stripped away

He took his third divorce kinda hard
Got fitted for a rug and bought that German car
Stuffed a sock in his jock
so he’d look like cock of the walk
Started moonlighting as a bouncer
At the Rock Hard Café
Started slappin’ strippers around
In steam grate alleyways
He got quite a rep
For bein’ a precinct lothario
Put a bun in the oven
Of a Spanglish muffin
In a Puerto Rican barrio
Liked nude dude ranches in the Catskills
And whispers said he caught the clap
From some redhead who roped Mustangs
In assless chaps
Even dated the Captain’s daughter
And ten minutes of playin’ porno Scrabble
He was spankin’ that braided blonde
With an auction paddle

Well, his stab wound wasn’t deep
If he was younger, he might’ve lived
My guess it was some shaky sweet thing
Who stuck him with the shiv
Well, they dusted for prints
Slipped him in the zipper bag
By midnight he’d be in a metal drawer
misspelled name on his toe-tag

I nosed around a bit
Grilled a bellhop and a maid
They’d both noticed a pretty blonde with braids
Called some contacts downtown
And knew what the Captain’s daughter did
Ol’ Charlie was a claptrap and now
Twenty years old and she couldn’t have kids
I decided to think it over
I hit the streets and bought a pint
Copped a squat on the curb
By the headshop on Haley and Ninth
Teardrops smudged the fingerprint dust
That’d fallen on my black Florsheim’s
When I wiped ‘em clean I saw my face
In maybe five year’s time
Poured the pint in the gutter
Called and cancelled my date
Told the Captain I had no leads
Left out the bellhop and maid
I got home after midnight
Sat there and thought of the waste
Stared at my gun for awhile
Then turned on Nancy Grace

Wow, what a story. Love the details.

"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek

A great story. Told in an excellent style.
