John, having never been to the Netherlands, I had no idea they actually had land above sea-level! These animal pathways are a great, though expensive, idea. Still worth it despite the cost.

I've spent a lot of time in the Netherlands. Most of it is above sea level, though not by much.

Part of my early family came to New Amsterdam from Holland (or whatever they called it back then) and moved west as the English took over and renamed it New York. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to talk with them about the terrain across the pond. LOL! (There are folks here that believe I am 280 years old, though!)

It seems our esteemed "Builders" are too busy doing investigations to do any building! Maybe somebody needs to put a finger in their dyke!

Underpasses for animals would be likely cheaper than overpasses and cheaper to maintain. I believe there are some in Canada but I'm not sure. It would save lives of people as well as animals. Hitting a moose has takes many lives in my province, not to mention the property damage.

I think that I read that they have one or two out in LA.

They build overpasses for prey animals, which prefer the open air and light.
They build underpasses for predators, which are more stealthy.
A company just finished a seventeen mile bypass around Scioto County, Ohio. No animal considerations that I can see. I wonder how much animal/vehicle conflict there has been. In the years of construction I imagined the wildlife learning to use the roadway as a transit path, drinking from the waterholes, eating the newly planted grass, traveling to and from where they've always traveled, then, suddenly, one day it was opened to 42,000 pound trucks hurtling along at 70 miles per hour, and two-ton cars, heavier by moving at 70 mph. I have not heard of conflicts but did see a car stopped and saw a bloodied deer get up and run away, on one underpass of another highway under the new one, and saw a deer near the exit of that same intersection of another occasion. Deer, bear, opossum, skunks, raccoons, lynx, could all be potential conflicts for the drivers.

I know I have seen Turtle bridges in Florida. Bridges that work for humans and animals both would be ideal in my view.

Well, now that you mention it,
Over the years I have noticed more animals killed on the roads when they change from daylight savings time and visa versa. So if you drive during those times be a bit more careful.

I think this might cause more animals falling off the edge, and then getting hit by cars. Ie. if a dog sees a squirrel and chases after him, and he falls off the edge. I dont think that edge looks high enough

We have those wildlife overpasses here in the high Rockies between Silverthorne and Winter Park in hopes the the hordes of mule deer use them instead of Billy Bob's truck drag-a-way (Hwy 9).

Now if we could just get rid of dams and let trout/salmon migrate naturally..... Make all packaging universally recyclable..... Allow small local farms to compete with government subsidized lands.... Do away with big cities and corporations, spread smaller more competitive businesses out so everyone can ride a bicycle to work.... Focus on national self sufficiency instead of international trade.... Build rockets to shoot all our nuclear waste into the sun.... And then terraform mars..... It would be utopia I tell ya', UTOPIA!!!!

Good ideas, especially about making farms back into small farms where we know that the food we are eating is not poisoning us. Mass production of food may be cheaper but certainly not safer. Soil is over fertilized, over sprayed for insects, weed and fungus to the point we are getting it in our food and making us sick. Not to mention what is injected into the animals and birds so that they produce more meat, eggs and milk to increase profit for these factory farms, but what is it doing to us who consume this stuff. Not to mention what is put into the processed foods to keep it from spoiling when it is shipped thousand of miles to market. Now they are coming up with "beyond" products to replace meat, chicken, fish and eggs. What will the chemicals they use to make this do to us down the road. Man fools around with nature, mainly to make more profit, and he creates more problems for the consumer that eats what they manufacture. Chemical fertilizer and sprays destroys the soil structure, kills earth worms and micro organisms in the soil so they have to add more and more fertilizer and poisons to get the same production and profit out of the soil. This kills the taste of the vegetables they produce so people hate to eat them in their natural state, so they process them and add taste through sugars and chemicals. It's a vicious cycle all so a few companies can get control of food production and make share holders rich. Makes us sick so we spend more on Doctors and drugs to cover up the symptoms of what unhealthy food does to us. No doubt we get the cheapest food in the world but we are paying dearly for it in the long run.

Did you know that insects are now slowly building up a tolerance to GMO crops? What in the world will we do when nature responds to our greed driven insanity with insects that can eat anything? Furthermore, this world wide epidemic of obesity/diabetes seems to coincide with the mass production of GMO/steroid/chemically infused foods. Who's to say what we’re already suffering the consequences of on a genetic/biochemical level?

I share your concerns about GMO crops, but, to be fair, the obesity epidemic was already in full swing before they came on the scene.

If I remember the stats correctly, obesity jumped from only 11% of the population to more than 30% by the mid 90's.... The genetic/biochemical science is really just a symptom of a much bigger problem. America has always been the breadbasket of the industrial world. However, we’re no longer producing crops and livestock out of a sense of necessity. We’ve shifted to only producing specific crops and livestock purely for profit. Here’s a question; Do you really believe that belching cows produce more methane than pig manure? The truth is, pigs can be bread and slaughtered the same as chickens since they don’t graze. They don’t require acreage and they will eat absolutely anything without going "mad cow". So, the powers that be tell us that cattle destroy the atmosphere just to drive up the cost of beef. Meanwhile, the cost of a hamburger at any drive through has not changed.... Even I’ve been alive long enough to remember when going out for a burger and fries was a treat, an enjoyable splurge... but it was always cheaper to make a burger at home. Now it’s more cost effective to go out, and chances are you won’t have to drive more than a mile..... Think about it
