THE PRICE I’LL PAY
(Country Ballad)
Copyright: January 16, 2019
Recorded at Jackass Flats Studio

INTRO

There has to be a reason… Darlin’…
I didn‘t know... your words could hurt that way…
but you touched a nerve... I thought I’d long forgotten…
All those memories… from another time and day.

You took the Bus to somewhere… north of Fort Worth…
Never came home… never wrote… then you called today…
You found somebody new… in Oklahoma…
Now you’re looking for a lawyer… that’s all you called to say!

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

It ain’t easy to believe… I’ll never hold you…
I can’t help it… I love you anyway…
Come back Honey… you know I’ll treat you better…
but your silence hurts me.. more than I can say…
and If I can’t have you, Darlin‘… it’s the price I’ll have to pay!

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

I watched you board the Bus… that morning…
you saw me… when I brushed a tear away…
The Winter wind... was sending me a warning…
Still, my memories of you linger… but you never planned to stay.

It hurts to know… somebody else will love you…
but it’s my fault… I let love slip away…
Nothing good.. can ever come from jealous anger…
and I think I’ve lost the will to pray… but If you don’t love me, Darlin‘...
...It’s the Price I’ll have to pay.

OUTRO (v5N) (Tempo = 78)

If it sounds "country"... maybe it is Country? Thanks for listening. ----Dave

I was looking for the story to continue not hear a break so early. JMHO
The second is in a good stop.
Sorry but the hook doesn't go with the story...don't we pay for something we want.
Seems he's giving up to easily....????
Maybe,
Tell me.... what was my mistake.

Humm, Dave,
A pretty good Traditional Country song but I think it isn't strong enough at present. I would re-visit it a bit later and see if I could strengthen it. Good luck.

Hi Dave,

Love the Owen Bradley feel. Enjoyable all the way through. I like how you setup the hook/title line--it works every time.

Not sure if the double tracking around the title line works in this genre, and I think your phrasing was weak on a line or two (like ",You took the Bus to somewhere… north of Fort Worth"....long ...pause..." --but those are minor things easily fixed.

Loved it, overall. smile

Thanks for listening, Ray:

Not planning on pitching this one any time soon. On the other hand, if someone who can actually sing decided to "melt wax" with it... I wouldn't mind! It's amazing, the things we attempt out of boredom.

Have a great day, Pal. ----Dave

Hi Mike:

Glad you took the time to listen and comment. My phrasing is always weak... but bravely, I soldier on... knowing full well, the man with the money is not going to be knocking at my door. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

All the best, ----Dave

Hi David...

Trad Country. well recorded. I like the Hook more prominent, but that's just how I roll...You have 5 opportunities to say "It's the Price I'll have to pay" But you chose to only utilize 2 of them....

I personally would have written from the Chorus/Hook more on this one. But if you paid for studio time, I think this one is done.

Nice listen...Over 1000 songs???? Sweet

Thanks for listening and commenting, Steve:

As you know, most artists are going to "cut" the song the way they... or their producer want to slice and dice it. I didn't pay for studio time... it's my little cavern of escape from reality... LOL! This song would not "fly well" in today's Nashville and I know it. Sometimes, we owe it to ourselves to write what we feel... and what works best with the limited gear and vocal chords we have been allotted! B-T-W... I've sure enjoyed your work and believe you have a real future in "the Biz!"

Regards and best wishes, ----Dave

Hi Tony:

Huntsville area? (North Alabama covers a pretty wide area of beautiful country.) Thanks for taking time to hear "Captain Croak"... and yes, I'm only a couple of years younger than Willie... but my guitar is not named "Trigger!" That thing has to be repaired about every six months, I'm told! Wish my work sounded one-tenth as good as his, though! One of my heroes.

Your presence here at JPF is a real boost. Always looking forward to hearing more from you. ----Dave

Hi Dave,

I like the traditional country sound of this song. You sing it well!

You gotta do what's in your heart and you did.

Nice melody.
For me, the first instrumental break is useless.

Have fun!

Greetings, Guy:

Break... schmake... LOL! We must write and attempt to perform our songs the way our "inner-compass" directs us. I've only been at this for 20 years... and I learn something new about music and the "biz" associated with it every day. So glad you've joined us here at JPF. Looking forward to hearing more of your work. Thanks for stopping by, listening and sharing your thoughts.

Regardezvous... ----Dave

Hi Roy:

Yes, my friend... I took down all of the thirteen songs I had "tacked up" at SoundCloud as a free member. After a few days, it became apparent to me that they really want paying members. So tearing down all the effort that went into putting up those few songs from my catalogue was a bit painful for me, especially since Gavin had led me by the hand in getting them up and running. Time for me to do my "MacArthur" act and begin to fade into the woodwork. Publicly, it appears my music "career" is over. Privately, I'll keep writing and recording until I am no longer able. An audience of one is sufficient... LOL!

Thanks for noticing... and for all the many kindnesses you have sent in my direction over the years.

All the best, always... ----Dave
