Just finished this one. I was one of them that stood in the back row.
Not sure what the genre is. Maybe Americana or folk rock. Not sure.
Maybe you all will have different ideas like myself.

Here's the link: https://soundcloud.com/vic-arnold/stand-up

You made your choice. Took the back row.
Now you're drowning in that undertow.
Time to seize the day in every single way
Ch.
And stand up. Stand up.
This ain't no time to lay down.
V2
You watch it all... from your safe place
Run away .... hide your face
No one ever sees the person you could be
Ch.
So stand up. Stand up.
This ain't no time to lay down.

Br.
Makes no difference who they are.
What they say.
Words can never kill you.
Ch.
So stand up. Stand up.
This ain't no time to lay down.

This is war. This is war.
So stand up. Stand up. Stand up.

Stand Up has a quality, an aura about it, enhanced by that unique vocal you personify, Vic. The genre is pure Vic... but Americana, Folk or Alt. Country all work well. Great fiddle in the middle break and the banjo I believe I heard was not over-stated. Enjoyed, my talented friend.

Hi Vic,

I try to stay away from the "folk-rock" category (even when it fits) cuz it's considered 70s and unhip, whereas Americana covers the same territory but carries less negative baggage. Though try asking 10 people exactly what "Americana" is, and you'll get 10 different responses.

I love this lyric. You tread a fine line and find the perfect words--this is a case where a little vagueness works to your advantage--and it works to make a strongly charged statement without being offensive, yet might help tip the scale with some folks who've used their silence like a shield when they actually had something important to say, to make a difference like that. You did it without making anyone ashamed of being a little cowardly, just strongly inferred that maybe NOW..maybe in these times we're living, it might be time to speak up..and that speaks to me greatly..I may get your lyric a tad different than you intended, but I'm sure you are okay with that. In particualr I read "war" metaphorically, as in, you're saying that this is important stuff, so don't back down..

I thought musically it was nice and could imagine a version bumped to a faster tempo and in a slightly higher key, making you "go for it" with the higher notes, which would bring even more passion into your lead vox.

Loved it. smile

Mike

Hi Dave.
First let me thank you for your always encouraging comments.
I get stuck on genres as there are so many so I don't tend to think of them when I write.
Whatever it comes out as initially is usually what I go with.

Thanks Mike.
I thank you for the same reasons I gave Dave.

Yes, you have a point about "Folk Rock". I'll stick with "Americana".

You're spot on with the lyric's meaning.
Strange thing, just as I wrote it an ad came on TV with a sad looking young child thinking loudly to himself, "sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me".
The message was "Oh yes they will", but how does that help the child?.

Thanks again.

Good song, well delivered, Vic. I agree with Mike that the combination of a certain vagueness with a clear call to action works in its favor. The listener can project his own interpretation onto the reasons he should stand up - but you are definitely telling him that he needs to do so.

Also, like Mike, I wonder what this would be like at a slightly faster tempo and higher key. Not that it ain't good the way it is.

What is the proper etiquette when it seems two writers are definitely on the same "wavelength" and have basically written the same song? smile

Hi Gavin.
Thank you. I prefer readers to interpret a song in their own way so that seems to have worked ok.

As for the tempo and key, I did try it slightly faster and came to the conclusion it sounded a little too jolly (although just 5bpm may be ok) but maybe that's because I'm a bit of a doom merchant.
If I sang it in a higher key I couldn't hit the high notes in the backing vocals and processing with V Vocal or Melodyne would introduce Donald Duck to the band.

Thanks again for the comments.

Powerful and meaningful song and damn the genre. Why do we label everything and file it under categories some will never bother to listen to??? This song can apply to anyone who has settled into a routine, become a silent majority, chosen to just be part of the crowd. Letting injustice go on all around them'
The Helen Keller Syndrome....I don't work like that and I won't go outl ike that.
Superb work Vic....

Not at all. I was flattered.
I could see our lyrical thoughts were on the same track.
I couldn't make out all the lyrics but I particularly liked "Temperance is no excuse for complacency". Nice one.

Hi there MFBIII.
I'm with you on genres. Those upload sites like Soundcloud, Soundclick etc., insist that you tick a genre in the little box.
Maybe next time I'll enter "Vicarna".

Thanks for the response.
