Hi Friends,

I've never shared this with anyone and I really felt like sharing something nice, today. wink

Only Kristi McKeever has heard this, cuz at the time we were working on songs together and she helped me revise the lyric.

There was a period where recording artist, jazz singer and bandleader Halie Loren did demos and I luckily acquired her services for this and for a song Kristi mostly wrote called, "The Sounds of You" which is also very special to me. Halie's got a beautiful voice and that's her band doing the music for this, fronted by pianist Matt Treder, and they're stellar as well.

"How Broken Hearts Can Be" is mostly 18 years old and this recording is from 2009, I believe. Anyway, a private link just for JPFers:

How Broken Hearts Can Be

V1
First they hide their feelings
one too many times
and blow up little details big
and fail to read the signs
finally they shatter leaving
only love's debris
now I know how broken hearts can be

V2
A thousand little pieces
are way beyond repair
it's almost as if each
has got its own little despair
a thousand little pieces and there
ain't no warranty
now I know how broken hearts can be

(Bridge-Instrumental)

V3
They're such delicate organs
you didn't handle mine with care
love and romance lifted it
and held it in the air
when love let go I fumbled it and
I wore it on my sleeve
now I know how broken hearts can be

B
As broken as the light
passing through this willow tree
as broken as the night
you said you needed to be free
I held mine in my hands as you
walked away from me
then I watched it crumble
like some dried up Autumn leaves

V3
They're such delicate organs
you didn't handle mine with care
love and romance lifted it
and held it in the air
when love let go I fumbled it and
I wore it on my sleeve
now I know how broken hearts can be

now I know how broken hearts can be

This is what "good collaborations" are "all about!" Wonderful work, Mike and Kristi... and bringing in a "hired gun" female vocalist was such a good idea, Mr. Producer. Top notch work, all around. Kudos and Curtain Calls! JPF is so lucky to have talent like this on such a broad front! Delicious, sensitive and spectacular.

Didn't really want to listen to a break-up song, broken heart song, well you know.....

But this one isn't a total tear jerker, which makes it listenable....And the music gives the impression of life still goes on...

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A MARKET FOR BREAK-UP SONGS....AND BROKEN HEART SONGS....

FYI....10 hearts got broken in the world whie I wrote this short 2 minute response to your post

Thanks Gavin, Tony, Dave, Lane, and Steve

I was never completely happy with the song. Using V3 like a pseudo-chorus and finding the word "organs" to be the best of a bunch of bad choice--but I thought Halie and band took it someplace special. smile.

With this, I was on a writer's quest to see just how far one could stretch a metaphor towards literalness without it collapsing. The 'broken heart' metaphor is pretty durable, like that, fortunately.

Thanks for listening and for your nice comments.

Dave & Lane, thank you for your nice comments. If my memory is correct though, Mike conceived this and did the heavy lifting and I just “passed the scalpel” here and there. wink

I think it’s a gorgeous song. Mike found a gem in Halie....she has such a distinctive voice and I was lucky to have her sing on another one years ago!

Thanks for putting a coin in the jukebox for this one, Mike!

Hi, you three.
Sounds cute to me. Well written too.
Not a great fan of the lounge bar style but it works fine here.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Thanks for the nice comments. I appreciate your giving this a listen.

Hi Folks
I always like to read through the lyrics first and i found this as probably one of the best i've read anywhere on the forum for sometime.
My wife commented that the opening reminded her of Don't it make Your Brown eye's blue. I went for Diana Krall, either way i love the lounge style songs,so laid back and if done properly allowing you to drift off into thought land.
I like it a lot Mike.
Good vocal and music and a great song all round
Regards
John

Hi John,

Thanks for that. smile

The lyric uses the fact that the title line can mean two things, either/or or both at the same time, both their degree-of-brokenness and how they came to be that way. So the lyric talks about each in different sections so the challenge was making this semi-gimmicky approach feel organic, to make the "device" invisible..but when I wrote it I just wrote it with none of that in mind, just writers' guts I guess.

Kristi helped me turn it into a lyric a woman could sing. I originally had the line "as I got down on my knees" or "as I got up off my knees" --I forgot which--that's where the line "like some dried up Autumn leaves" is now, with a woman singing. That was one line in particular that didn't fly for a woman to sing.

Thanks again,

Mike

You found a unique way of looking at the subject addressed by 100 million Songs. That's amazing.
I'm going to suggest some edits that occur to me. I'm going to go ahead and post this while I think through the Lyric. My internet keeps blinking out, losing everything typed in so far.
The length, at 4:19 is probably too long for terrestrial radio-play, by about 49 seconds. In 49 seconds they can play 3 to 6 commercial ads which are what pays the bills. Giving them short Songs to play is a tactics to get played, which can earn Royalties.
First Edit Post 10:30. Second 10:39 Third 10:47 Fourth 10:55

"How Broken Hearts Can Be"

(C)2001 and 2009
Music by Mike Zaneski
Lyrics by Mike Zaneski and Kristi McKeever

(Your Verse 3 could work as Verse I, introducing the Singer-Character and the Love-Interest Character in Line 2, so listeners get a sense of hearing someone real tell their story, eavesdropping on their conversation.)
Verse I

They're such delicate organs.
You didn't handle mine with care.
Love and romance lifted it,
and held it in the air.
When love let go I fumbled it. and (Delete 'and' as unnecessary word?)
I wore it on my sleeve.
Now I know How Broken Hearts Can Be.
(This last Line is a Chorus-Refrain. It is a Refrain-Type Chorus, as opposed to a Stanza-Type, comprised of several Lines, like a Verse. It IS the Chorus.)

Verse II

First HEARTS hide their feelings, (Saying 'hearts' instead of 'they' might be clearer. I thought 'they' referred to people.)
one too many times.
THEY blow up little details big, (Saying 'They' here eliminates 'and' in favor of 'and' in next Line.)
and fail to read the signs. (You could say 'They' in this Line too.)
Finally they shatter, leaving
only love's debris.
Now I know How Broken Hearts Can Be.

(At this point you've gone through the Musical Movement of the Verse/Chorus-Refrain twice, the Repetition supplying Structure listeners demand to relate to the Song. At this point my ear craves Change. To repeat a third time would risk me drifting off to my own thoughts, coming Un-Hooked. The Stanza-Type Chorus often intervenes here to break the repetition and supply a Change of dynamics to renew listener interest. A Bridge, Instrumental or Vocal, with its own variation of Melody, Lyrical cadence, dynamics in the arrangement (instruments) can serve that function of breaking the Repetition.)

Vocal Bridge

As broken as the light,
passing through this willow tree;
As broken as the night,
you said you needed to be free. (You said, "I need to be free!")
I held mine in my hands as you,
walked away from me.
Then I watched it crumble.
like some dried up Autumn leaves. (Delete 'some'. A vague and unnecessary word?)

Verse III

A thousand little pieces
are way beyond repair.
It's almost as if each
has got its own little despair. (has it's own PIECE of despair)
A thousand little pieces, and there
ain't no warranty (A thousand little pieces. I ain't got no warranty.)
Now I know How Broken Hearts Can Be

(Bridge-Instrumental) (You may not need an Instrumental Bridge to serve any function.)

V3 (I used this V3 as Verse I)
They're such delicate organs
you didn't handle mine with care
love and romance lifted it
and held it in the air
when love let go I fumbled it and
I wore it on my sleeve
Now I know How Broken Hearts Can Be

(This final Musical Movement is a Coda, repeating THE Hook, the title, to drive it home as the gist of the Song idea.)
Now I know How Broken Hearts Can Be

So, the Structure would be as follows:

"How Broken Hearts Can Be"

(C)2001 and 2009
Music by Mike Zaneski
Lyrics by Mike Zaneski and Kristi McKeever

Verse I

They're such delicate organs.
You didn't handle mine with care.
Love and romance lifted it,
and held it in the air.
When love let go I fumbled it.
I wore it on my sleeve.
(Chorus-Refrain)
Now I know How Broken Hearts Can Be.

Verse II

First hearts hide their feelings,
one too many times.
They blow up little details big.
They fail to read the signs.
Finally they shatter, leaving
only love's debris.
Now I know How Broken Hearts Can Be.

Vocal Bridge

As broken as the light,
passing through this willow tree;
As broken as the night,
you said, "I need to be free!"
I held mine in my hands as you,
walked away from me.
Then I watched it crumble.
like dried up Autumn leaves.

Verse III

A thousand little pieces
are way beyond repair.
It's almost as if each
has its own piece of despair.
A thousand little pieces, and I
ain't got no warranty.
Now I know How Broken Hearts Can Be

(Coda)
Now I know How Broken Hearts Can Be

END
Or, repeat Bridge, Coda, and END.

Vocal Bridge

As broken as the light,
passing through this willow tree;
As broken as the night,
you said, "I need to be free!"
I held mine in my hands as you,
walked away from me.
Then I watched it crumble.
like dried up Autumn leaves.

Coda
Now I know How Broken Hearts Can Be

Hi Gary,

Thanks for looking at this so closely. I always appreciate that. smile

I have to disagree about leading off with "organs" though. I like the mini "reveal" a listener gets to have by wondering who or what exactly "they" are and why they are blowing up little details to big ones, etc..

Leading off with "organs" leaves some mystery, but a listener is then combing through possible organs the singer might be talking about. That's not where I want a listener's imagination going.

And so changing "they" to "hearts" doesn't work for me either. As I said, no mystery there, then..

As to nixing the word "some" from the line "then I watched it crumble/like some dried up Autumn leaves" --the word "some" specifically makes it seem like a casual, random thing to happen--which is even more devasting an account by the singer..so I like the word "some" there..

Thanks for the listening and the suggestions.. smile

Mike

What a tremendous song! Like a standard classic I never heard.

I love the blend of deep sadness and whimsical imagery. This is just one of those little hits waiting to happen for someone...definitely worthy of a top-shelf artist to wrap themselves around.

I really, really like this. smile

Thanks, Mark!

When I listen to it lately, I too hear the sadness meets whimsy. The singer has distanced herself enough from her own heartbreak to look at it analytically, and yet she's a poet so her "analysis" is full of metaphor and is fun to listen to.

Thanks for the big smile you've helped wrap around my face this early afternoon. smile

Very glad I got to listen to this. Obviously this is far more jazzy, but for some reason I thought of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" as I was listening. Probably due to the lyrical message. This is just stellar though. You are correct, really good band and a wonderful vocal. Mighty fine job on the lyric, as well. Love love love that piano.

MIke,

Such a pretty tune—righteous in all respects. Got nothing more to say than that—just darn good! Thanks for sharing something nice . . . and making a day that was not so nice a whole lot better! :-)

My best to you,

Deej

Thanks Deej,

It became a nice day that has extended into weeks.. smile

Thanks Mr. Becker.

Yes, lyrically in the same ballpark as the Raitt song which I love.

Thanks, guys, for listening and I'm glad you liked it!

Hey Mike,

Been awhile, but what a beautiful peace of music and performance--the bridge was so perfect with this song. Sweet vox for sure--and also well written lyrically. Well done, no nits, just pure enjoyment!

This was the perfect song for me to hear and end a long work day and hit the rack ready to go out to be a road warrior again tomorrow--(this road warrior business doesn't allow me much time for writing or producing music--but it pays better)!

I realize I'm late responding to this song, but I just listened to it, and it's an entirely lovely tune. Earlier on this thread, someone mentioned that it brought Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" to mind. I hear that, as well. There's a wistfulness to both songs. Resignation also. Like others on this thread, I love the piano on this recording, and the singer really inhabits and enlivens the lyrics. Again, on the whole, it's just a gorgeous, resonant recording.

Hi Mike, and Kristi,
I am so glad this one got bumped up. The lyrics are wonderful. I love the way the subject is treated. The music and the singer lift it even higher. I would put it on my playlist if I could. Halie sings in a Norah Jones style I love. She is not just a singer but a stylist. Congratulations on a beautiful song.

Mike, I just love Halie's voice, it's perfect for this type of "standard" and you have put together everything about this song so well. The only (tiny) thing that felt out of place for me was the word "organ". It just sounds too...clinical? for such a romantic vibe. But in the over all scheme of things, it is a small thing that, to a person just listening and not pouring over the lyrics, would most likely not be noticed. So good to hear you post something of your own. Well done.

Ricki
