Cheyenne had mentioned a song on another thread, Unchained or Unchained Melody.

The song is UNCHAINED MELODY and was recorded sometime back in the 1950's. The Original Artist was Al Hibbler. I Have the song on a double CD set Entitled: THOSE WONDERFUL YEARS. I believe the song was recorded for a Movie but don't know what the Movie was. It is probably Posted on the Web.

The Title, UNCHAINED MELODY appears nowhere in the song and the song is a bit hard to sing. Others have since recorded the song Leann Rimes is one.

Hi Ray:

That was a popular song when I was a freshman in Fayetteville back in '54. You are correct, Al Hibbler first sang it and it stayed on the charts a long time. People were not as fickle back then... or maybe it was just because they didn't have smart phones to dumb them down? LOL! Never heard LeeAnn's version and can't remember anyone else having the vocal ability to do the song justice. Thanks for the memories, Ray and Cheyenne.

Have a great day. ----Dave

The movie was Sea of Love Ray. Kind of a gruesome film.

Wasn't my music, or my movie Dave. Here's the trailer to the movie: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...4BA578FABDF16857371&&FORM=VRDGAR

I was mistaken. The Sea of Love movie used the song "Sea of Love" : https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...693DC055E65C96AAA57&&FORM=VRDGAR

Unchained Melody was used in Ghost: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...20FF060905028354D11&&FORM=VRDGAR

BTW, Unchained Melody and Sea of Love are both using the same kind of broken chords. I see a lawsuit coming. laugh

john as i stated in my thread That Song Unchained Melody was written

for the movie UNCHAINED early fifties a Pretty Poor Western Film even by

the fifties standards

All Hibbler in the USA had a big hit at that time with it and in the U K Jimmy Young

All Martino maybe recorded it as well since then the song has been used in several

movies besides the two you stated The best recording of that song was done by

an American Duo The writer had one other hit ONE MEAT BALL and that was it as far as I know

just looking uo the two singers that sang it as a duo for the film - Ghosts- that was

The Righteous Brothers

The Juke box Standard for the fifties was recorded by Bobby

Hatfield and The Writer of Unchained Melody plus One Meat Ball was Hy Zaret

One of the most important principles of songwriting is to remember that a good song is a partnership of many different components, all working together to produce a satisfying musical experience.

In that respect, song components are either enhancing or compromising their combined effects.

Aw, Well,
It seems the Movie, UNCHAINED has been lost in obscurity but the song has lived on as somewhere I may have read it has been covered some 500 times. The best version? Well that is a matter of opinion. I just listened to Marty's version, Lee Ann's version and the R. Bro's version, on the Net and of course Al Hibbler's version. Of all those I still think Al Hibbler's version ranks as the best. Smooth Sailing everybody!

If you look at the lyrics, it's clear the melody was written first or at the same time the lyrics were. Nobody writes "Oh, My love, My darling" without knowing the melody

There's not much to the lyric by itself, it's the emotion of the singer that makes it a moving song. Economy in lyrics reveals itself again

Oh, my love, my darling
I've hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time
Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me

Lonely rivers flow
To the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea
Lonely rivers sigh
"Wait for me, wait for me"
I'll be coming home, wait for me

Oh, my love, my darling
I've hungered, for your touch
A long, lonely time
Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me

Now that's successful songwriting. laugh I watched the trailer for "Unchained". Looked like a gruesome movie about slavery. One I wouldn't want to see. Can't imagine that song fitting in that film.

Eh, Well,
I would say this is an example of a song that as basic as it is had no right to go anywhere but from little acorns grow big trees no? So don't over write your songs. You too may have an UNCHAINED MELODY. Heck, I have several!
