Next time you see some cauntree star on tv talking about how they love everybody and have empathy for every man, woman and child on earth and wanna save all the babies from something or other...think about how they treat people whose songs they steal. That's who they really are.

“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.”

Here we go again Fdmetrio... I reckon lawsuits are more lucrative than making money legitimately these days. John I think the recent surge of cases is due to the fact that songs dont make as much money as they used to. When the gold rush was happening, nobody cared if something borrowed from something else, but now that at least 70% of income from song sales is gone, one way to make it up is by looking for somebody to sue. I could personally name at least 50 songs that borrow from something else and no suit was ever filed. Not sure why people think they are writing original songs. I could go through this forum and find similarities in everything, and often do. If I accused one of them of stealing something, they would probably argue tooth and nail that it sounds nothing like it. 12 notes, one chromatic scale to work with. And nowadays, music is recorded with the same tempo, and same time signature alot of the time, so how much wiggle room is there? not much

In the case of Taurus and Game on, it looks like there is a case to be made. In both cases there is a marked similarity and alleged access beforehand. We 'll see.

Id rather steal something I like. All I know is there are trends in music. One guy uses a certain drum sound, everybody starts using it. I recall Phill Collins circa 1985, everybody was using the sounds he came up with. Not copyrightable, but the idea is the same, you stole this guys ideas, OR, you rode his coattails to success. If you notice a hit song comes out, and suddenly there are 5 songs in a row that all sound the same. It's riding the trends. You see it on TV too, somebody has a hit with one singing show, then there are 5 singing shows. You hear a certain style of vocal on the radio, and suddenly ten people sound just like that same singer. It's all modeling and basicly stealing ideas. I believe if anything that's all that is in play here. It's not even a great song, inhmo, I think its more trying to be current, than stealing the song.

I don't think that there are any plagiarism cases about stealing a trend. Or a mode. Or a chord progression. There has to be enough genuine similarity to make a reasonable person ask themselves if it was stolen. And then the judge will instruct them on whether or not the theft is a violation of law.
It's interesting to me. Who knows how all these will turn out?
Actually, the Marvin Gaye thing seem to be about a modality. From what I read of it anyway. So there's that.

It's all creative ideas that somebody came up with (from somebody before them too) Melody is the only thing that gets protected, but even as such, melodies are stolen or borrowed or edited all the time. like I said I can provide tons of examples

Well I suggest you watch the outcome of these cases and study up on how to disguise the theft of any future melodies that you might lift. :-)
Accidentally or not.

Accidentally or not. Im not one bit worried about it, you know why? If I steal a hit song, I still make way more money on the song than I would if I didnt steal anything and used my own song. My name would go down as co writer with whoever I stole from as well. it's a bit like going to jail, inmates get three meals and cable TV. Can learn a trade, all cause they did something wrong. Weird world we live in hey? But you know the real reason im not worried? Cause my music's never going to make any money and nobody will want 50% of 20 bucks.

Hey, at least Carrie didn't accuse Heidi of stealing the song she stole like Garth Brooks did to Todd Snider.
