CASUALTY OF TIME.. ACOUSTIC

WORDS/ MELODY TRAVIS
EVERYTHING ELSE THE SKILL OF MIKE ZANESKI
V
Barley swayed in golden waves
as far as my eyes could see
as if showing me the distance
separating you from me.
V
We loved, we fought, cried and tried
but it could never be
Ev'ry dance was our last dance
then we parted finally
C
Like summer flowers
are casualties of time.
Beautiful while they last
only fleeting by design
We were casualties of time
A casualty of time

V
Tried to think where you are
wherever you could be
Wonder if you feel this pain
or are you happy to be free

B
I've play our song so many times
You are that misty rose
too lovely to forget,
too beautiful to be alone

C

I prefer this version. To me it's more in keeping with the lyric.

Hi Vic,

Thanks.

So does the singer mentioning "barley" mean that the music must be folk music?

I thought about this and figured it depended if it was "his" barley or just barley he saw in passing.. wink

LOL......NOT!!!

But DID think about the funny places we can go if we dwell too long and too deep on a lyric!

After discussing the song with John last month, it seemed apropos to pay a little homage to that great Tim Hardin song ("Misty Roses"), which is actually a 4/4 samba with strong ties to soft, Brazilian jazz. In John's lyric, he alludes to it "favorite song..you are that misty rose"

So we did that. "Misty Roses" was a soft samba sung by a folky, but with a jazzy orchestration including vibes. It would have been sacrilege not to have paid homage in some way or another. It's almost a rule, is it not, that if you mention a song in another song, you have to quote a little bit of it, right? So there's that in John's song..the most salient being a little bit of Misty Roses' chord progression and the vibraphone..as well as a folky finger-picked guitar.

Certainly, all that is "too inside" for the average listener, but I thought it a nice Easter Egg--plus "Hardinizing" helped in fleshing out the chords which amazingly seemed inherent in what John had sung..

So that was my thought process. Misguided perhaps, but hey!

I never expect to please everyone, but care mostly about making sure the client is happy, and though John and I had discussed doing it as a jazz/folk hybrid like the Hardin song it alludes to, he was very happy when I offered to create a mix that was mostly a submix with the more acoustic folk elements. Though he said, "just a guitar" I thought that it would sound really nice, in this version, to take what was the chorus piano part and give it to a mellow acoustic guitar but have it play the same thing the piano was playing in the former, and that's what you get in the chorus, here. And the trumpet becomes that guitar soloing. So for an acoustic submix (that fudges a little) --another guitar did not seem out of place.

And I'm glad you like it!

Cheers,

Mike

Travis (and Mike),

Well, I listened to both versions. I like the jazzier version well enough, but like Vic I prefer this version more . . . a lot more actually. It’s really smooth . . . clean . . . and very pretty, and Mike’s voice just resonates more for me. Really, really good. Nicely done, boys . . . and thanks for sharing this acoustic version.

Mike, thanks for all the additional context . . . it makes me appreciate all the more what you do!

My best to both of you,

Deej

"Barley" does not a folk song make but it does contribute.
Like "then we parted finally" and "misty rose" aren't phrases you hear much in modern life.
That's partly why I brought up the "folk" word (in the other version) and also why I prefer this version.

Breaking the mould is ok by me though.
