New Bend in an Old River

He had a pin in his hip and a plastic kneecap
he'd limp in ev'ry morning and order a decaf
the only one who shared his booth was his crutch
but one day there was trouble at the counter
the waitress was slapped by some drunken rounder
and that old guy dropped him with a single punch

there was a new bend in an old river
a new trick for an old pony
cos life has paths and highways
that may get dark and lonely
though some people on them
follow them forever
some change their minds and try to find
a new bend in an old river

just like ev'ry night Sam planned to drink and kick back
but that time when he stopped in for his six-pack
he paced that liquor aisle a minute or two
his glimmer of doubt shined like an omen
all his wasted years flashed by in a moment
when Sam walked out somehow the store clerk knew

there was a new bend in an old river
a new trick for an old pony
cos life has paths and highways
that can seem dark and lonely
though some people on them
follow them forever
some change their minds and try to find
a new bend in an old river

the movers put her new Steinway in the corner
morning shined through that window...it was warmer
and she sensed the picture on the wall smiling down
she'd kept his clothes neat in their closet
for months empty days dripped out like a faucet
but in learning to play somehow she had found

a new bend in an old river
a new trick for an old pony
cos life has paths and highways
that may seem dark and lonely
though some people on them
follow them forever
some change their minds and try to find
a new bend in an old river

Hi Couch,

I'm pretty new to these boards, but really not that new, I see a lot of songs posted on here with your name, with no feedback, and I get to wondering why?? so I went through and read some of your lyrics, and found all to be great, so why do people not give you feedback?. Just wondering.

thanks Emmy, haha.

for two reasons...

1) I'm a bit of a hermit and don't critique much aaaand...

2) lyric sites are kind of like mutual admiration societies where folks clique up and tell each other how much they love each others' stuff. (regardless of quality)

hey c.g.

I found this one very well written, nice story. I am a fan of story written lyrics, and you kept my attention throughout. Nice job! keep writing

Thanks for answering my questions, And I'd say thats two really good reasons.
Now I got another question, do you have a songbook with your songs?

Thanks, Emmy

If you go to the Taxi site, you can find a huge collection of his songs. Taxi apparently thought enough of the writing to give him his own catagory. I think it is just a matter of time before we start hearing some of this stuff on the radio. Some publishers have their hands on his writings now. I would like our "hermit" friend to do a clinic on how to write- but sadly I think he is probably right about songwriting forum sites. They are communities first and if you get constructive feedback that is an extra.

By the way, somehow skipped over this lyric, Rob. Another excellent job. I read it to my wife and she laughed at the end of the first verse. She loved the hook - "a new bend in an old river" - but she and I are fast approaching fifty and getting these two old rivers to bend at all is an accomplishment. [Linked Image]

I just love the way you pack so much into a small space, but make it sound natural.

"He had a pin in his hip and a plastic kneecap
he'd limp in ev'ry morning and order a decaf
the only one who shared his booth was his crutch"

These lines should be used as an example to beginning songwriters, in my opinion, and they're definitely an example for not-so-beginning ones, like me. You've drawn such a perfect picture of a quiet, lonely, old and infirm guy with just a few words in each line. The picture's crystal clear and the words are simple but put together in such an interesting way. It's all conversational and informational, both at the same time.

I'm looking forward to reading your lyrics. I can tell that I have a lot to learn from you, and your lyrics are a great place for me to start.

-- James

Man, I'd forgotten this one. I'd write it differently now but it's still one I'm proud of. Fourteen years ago.
