Thought I would post this for fun. We are working on a disc to sell at our shows. This song is one of my new faves of the stuff we have been writing for the band.

I am looking for thoughts/comments on the mix before we master this. Our band is called Blackfoot Daisy and we are based in the Atlanta area.

Players: Don Sechelski (vocals/guitar/bass); Wendy DuMond (percussion/vocals) and Jim Kirkland (flute)

In My Teeth

by Don Sechelski & Wendy DuMond

I got something
In my teeth
Making me crazy
I can't get relief
Poke it with my tongue
Try to work it free
But I got something
In my teeth

Maybe some gristle
Or a little bit of bone
Maybe the fight
we had last-night
I couldn't leave it alone
Chewing and gnawing
We had a real beef
Now I got something
In my teeth

(Bridge)
Guess I went crazy
Made a little mess
Had to get out the carving knife
To dress-out the rest
Now I'm feeling lonely
Feeling kinda low
If I had a choice again
I'd rather eat that crow

Break

I got something
cookin' in a pot
I gotta make-due
with what I've got
But I've got a feeling
It's gonna bring me grief
And I got something
In my teeth

I got something in my teeth x 3

Hi Wendy,

This is the kind of novelty song I could hear The Dead South doing, and Blackfoot Daisy is in that territory with this, and I imagine it's a great change of pace for the band and the album.

The band's album sound is gonna generally be dry-ish, reverb wise, I imagine, and so this is mixed just fine. I can hear everything and nothing seems too loud or soft. You seem lined up, in fact, just like The Dead South, from left-to-right, with all practically getting an equal volume in the mix.

There are (to me) a few piercing notes from the flute, which is usually mixed with a little more reverb and could help tame some of the more piercing notes that come right at the beginning of his solo..but that's a tough choice, cuz it's like having him step back from being in front with the rest of the band, so if "added reverb" is not something the band does, I wouldn't do it, but just maybe look at a couple of his piercing notes and notch EQ and/or lower the gain just for the moment when they hit. Otherwise, as a producer, I'd be totally happy with this mix. Not the kind of song to overthink, even at the mixing board.

Mike

Hey Mike,

Thanks for your thoughts on this. Don and I were discussing it last night on our way to a show. He said he added a bunch of verb to the flute. Also, I guess there is another mix that he thinks would probably fix the issue with those notes. It was funny, yesterday I was trying to play it on my phone and we had the GPS on due to heavy traffic. Each time we got to that portion of the song, the GPS lady would speak right over it. It happened like three times in a row and we had a good laugh over this. That helped me because I always get a bit corked-up and nervous when we play a new venue.

If I have time, I will put the new mix on Soundcloud and maybe it will address this. We have several songs we've been playing for about 6 or 8 months that are going in this direction. Very different departures we are taking with the band and I am loving it.

Really enjoyed this. Great lyric and the harmonies sound superb. Wouldn't change a thing.

Hey Wendy,

This is great! I like everything about this song. I have one small mixing sug since you asked--and its a small one. I like the panning of everything and get your arrangement balance, and love the flute, (sounds about 80% left, could barely hear it in my R head phone when removing the L). I think the flute is important enough to move it about 10-15% more R--especially during solo which should still keep it L dominant without encroaching on lead vox and still remaining opposite of Wendy's harmonies. Use or lose.

What a great performance guys! Put me down for a CD when your finished!

The Bridge sounds a lot like the Verse. The function of a Bridge is to renew listener interest, to Re-Hook them, with variation, Change. You might consider altering the Rhythm and Melody of the Bridge to serve that function. The flute sounds like it goes its own way, not closely relevant to the vocal Rhythm or Melody.

Apologies for not commenting sooner, Wendy:

I listened more than a week ago but could not gain access to my wife's computer for long. Cleverly written, masterfully performed. Dark but entertaining. They call it "Long Pig" down near where niteshift hangs his hat there in the South Pacific. LOL!

Glad to hear the band is thriving... and new directions are usually a good thing.

All the best, ----Dave
