It is amazing how controversial talking about Freedom of Speech can be! (On facebook at least). Thanks to those who jumped in on either side.

I am shocked that there are actually as many people saying it is okay to censor and ban people from the public square (which the Supreme Court recently ruled Social Media is when overturning a NC law saying they could ban a sex offender from posting online) as there were supporting my stance that it is not okay and that the slope is extremely steep and slippery the moment anyone is silenced (outside of law breaking which in slim circumstances is allowed). Just sad that people are so shortsighted because those they dislike or disagree with politically are the ones being targeted. They don't understand history and that once Free Speech is gone, it is a hard bloody battle to get it back if you even can. Some would say it is already lost. Certainly everywhere else on earth but the US it is gone.

If you say something that might be offensive to certain people or group of people, even if it is true, they will call it hate speech and throw you in jail or fine you heavily. It has happened here in Canada.

Humm,
Free Speech. It is the right to critizize, dang this board can't spell, ha, ha, the government without them coming for you in the middle of the night. Now if you make stupid statements nobody is going to give you the time of day on. They, I think, just repealed the Johnson Amendment, that restricted churches to favor one person over another running for office. Lyndon Baines Johnson got it passed to keep churches from opposing him. Of course you can't yell fire in a crowded Theatre. Write a Hit!

Churches have the absolute right to support any political party or candidate they choose. All they have to do is renounce their tax free status.

Free speech is a tough issue. Those who have been banned by Facebook are unlikely poster children for the issue as they are all revolting, loathesome creatures. Facebook is not the government and so, I guess, have a right to ban whomever they choose. Should being revolting and loathesome be enough to disqualify you? I would say not in itself, but it's up to Facebook and their ban on hate speech is not new. They are just enforcing it at last.

So you know first hand that they are "revoting, loathsome creatures" or you are taking the opinion from a second hand source? If you DO follow all of these people closely (rather than picking a random comment to condemn them from for example) then why did you follow them closely enough to know? Seems odd.

I only really followed one of them closely. He is none of what you claim. If we are going to randomly pick one thing to "ban" people over (or even many things) how about we ban all the entities that supported these hoaxes which cause death threats, rioting, social unrest and more:

-The Trayvon Martin Hoax
-The Hands Up, Don't Shoot Hoax
-Donald Trump Can't Possibly Win
-The Russia Collusion Hoax
-The Brett Kavanaugh Serial Rapist Hoax
-The Covington High School Boys Hoax

All of those things were more than justg revolting & loathsome, but they actually caused massive death threats, violence and social unrest. And all were lies.

Who supported, with full throated, relentless coverage?

CNN, the New York Time, the Washington Post, NPR, ABC, CBS, PBS, NBC, MSNBC, Politico, Buzzfeed and many more.

Should they all be banned? Of course not. But they all reported and supported conspiracy theories, hoaxes and complete fabrications. In some cases Children's lives, even AFTER the truth came out, have been forever changed and in some cases ruined from ever leading the life they once would have had. When these entities lie, it only costs them money and an ever shrinking TV ratings or sales or respect in the marketplace. But they aren't banned.

Why? Because of FREE SPEECH.

Brian

in the ancient past... we had slander laws to prevent "over-zealous" newspersons from distorting the truth. It appeared to make the risk of being hauled into court not worth all this tabloid, fabricated news and outright lies. I don't remember the details of how all this was "done-away-with" by some group of politicians... but it would be good to re-visit that method of checks and balances? I'm not saying we should re-invoke those laws... simply investigate the facts of that episode of history and determine the truth among rational minds or think tanks. That way we could make an informed decision on how to solve this problem of unverified news and constant leaks.

It galls me to walk to the check-out stand at the grocery store an be exposed to the outlandish claims about people of status, fame, royalty or corporate executives having to endure that hogwash in those trash rags. Are we, as a nation, so mentally flawed that we need to feed off that fabricated drivel to satisfy our need to be "dumbed-down" and somehow be made to feel better because the rich and famous are being lied about? JUST BECAUSE IT IS IN PRINT... DOES NOT MAKE IT THE TRUTH!

Those of you who have not read the poem by Dean Alfange... do yourself a favor and look it up. It defines the American Dream in my opinion and It begins: "I do not choose to be a common man... I will be uncommon if I can... Please do the research and read it.

If the present course of lunacy our leftist politicians are touting succeeds... "everything free" (conveniently ignoring the fact that someone must pay for all this)... [CAN YOU SAY TAXES ON EVERYONE... not just the rich!]... we will be a third-world nation in no time. Call it "Socialism" if you want... but it sure smells like the front door to Communism to me.

At this sad state of affairs where we have at least 20 or more "Democrats" running for President on platforms of unfounded lunacy... it becomes evident that our 13 original colonies would have been better off remaining as part of Britain... or our country should have never entered the fray of a two-front world-wide conflict in WWII to keep the World Free. In essence, all those God fearing, law abiding, Patriots will have served and died for nothing. Communism and Socialism do not work. Our Republic is not a true democracy... but it is better than most forms of Government.

Worst of all, the Traitors who call themselves Democrats are totally unwilling to defend our borders. Just try to cross into Mexico or Canada illegally and discover how they choose to treat illegal invaders.

For God's sake, please get over the wasted time and tax dollars of the Mueller Probe. We need to stop politicians from running for office the day they get elected... and get busy handling the business of this nation with less government, a strong military and strong immigration laws with enforcement to back it up.

Sanctuary Cities should be occupied by Federal Troops and their Leaders arrested and tried for Treason.

Our Founding Fathers had the courage to sign the Declaration of Independence at their own peril. They would be sickened at the current state of politics in our evolved, polarized nation.

Anyone with a brain and ears knows that they are loathesome creatures. I'm talking about Alex Jones, Louis Farrakhan, Milo Yiannopoulos, Laura Loomer and Paul Joseph Watson. If those are not loathesome creatures, then I don't know what is.

I certainly don't condone hoaxes. The last one that you mention was particularly egregious. Most of the mainstream news sources seemed to leap on it. The difference is that they didn't create the hoax and when they realized that they had been taken for a ride, they issued corrections and accepted responsibility for sloppy reporting. That doesn't change the fact that the kids' lives were impacted, of course.

The loathesome creatures banned by Facebook create their own hoaxes and never admit they were lying.

So you think CNN always admits to their lies? They are STILL doubling down on some of them. Many major publications never issued retractions to various items on the list above. If we look at the "fake news" #s, CNN leads the pack by such a distance that it would be impossible to even estimate the total number. Their existence has been fraught with lies and deceptions.

Here's 5 examples but do a websearch for endless examples: https://dailycaller.com/2017/06/14/for-chris-cillizza-here-are-five-fake-stories-cnn-pushed/

I recall during the Iraq war when CNN pretended to be live from that location during an air raid when they were in a studio in front of a green screen. There a reels of this stuff if you care to look.

Bottom line, they should not lose their right to free speech. No one should, no matter how reprehensible as long as they do not break the law. The Supreme Court just ruled that Facebook is the Town Square in affirming the right of a convicted sex offender to be able to post on Facebook. It is just a matter of time before someone puts up a case that "bans" bannings from the massive monopolistic (with 90+ % market share) tech companies. Frankly they should also break them up like ATT&T. Facebook should not be allowed to also own Instragram. Alphabet should not be allowed to own Google and Youtube, the two companies the two largest search engines.

In at least 2 of the 5 examples listed, CNN did correct itself. I'm not a cheerleader for CNN. They have a political slant for sure and anyone watching should bear that in mind, especially in those parts where commentary and news seem to blend uncomfortably.

The green screen thing is indeed a hoax, although not on the part of CNN but on the part of conspiracy theorists who propagate it. It is very easy to debunk and has been many times. What is worrying is that it, and things like it continue to fool so many people.

Totally agree about the large tech companies and their responsibility as virtual monopolies. If we were able to bust steel and oil monopolies in the past for the benefit of society as a whole, then the same logic could be applied to entities like Facebook, although actually doing it would certainly be complicated. The danger they pose is clear though, as can be seen in this really illuminating Ted Talk.

https://www.ted.com/talks/carole_cadwalladr_facebook_s_role_in_brexit_and_the_threat_to_democracy

Maybe the recent actions by Facebook are intended as a reaction to the way they have been used to undermine democracy, but greater transparency and cooperation with those who are trying to identify and hold to account those who manipulate it for this purpose, including those who do so criminally, might be a better first step.

Eh, Well,
A long time ago, I think, a Newspaper, maybe the New York Times proffered, We print all the news that is fit to print. Boy do I long for those days! However on the other side I hear our Fore Fathers weren't always a bunch of Angels either.

The people are not stupid and figure it out most of the time. Whats-Her-Name pulled every dirty trick in the book to get elected president. It didn't quite work, did it? If she had run a honest campaign she might have got elected. Somebody once said, You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. Write a Hit!

Free speech should be restricted to those who claim they report the news. I am so sick of networks who have a one sided agenda and slant the reporting in their direction. This also applies to the late night talk shows that clearly have an agenda. Stay neutral and just be funny. Take lessons from Walter Cronkite: “And that's the way it is".

Unfortunately people have lost the ability to be open minded and objective. You are tried and convicted by public opinion and lives are destroyed before they even see a courtroom. The networks with their agendas report the news in a way to sway the masses to their way of thinking. Even the newspapers, which were once considered a sacred purveyor for information, sway and alter their reporting. The ninety-ten rules take effect as ten percent of the people change the way ninety percent think and act.

The ninety percenters need to utilize their freedom for free speech and speak up more to balance the information that is currently being provided.

“You may say I'm a dreamer, But I'm not the only one, I hope some day you'll join us, And the world will be as one”.. John Lennon

Since the end of the WW2, European liberals have passed laws seeking to control speech and essentially thoughts, lest a facist contagion catch fire and then spread.

Yet in this country, when it came to burning a flag or denouncing the government, the same liberal leaning folks were and are all about freedom of speech and expression.

Then, in this country, amongst other things, came "hate crimes." If I am murdered for the color of my skin, that is deemed more egregious than being murdered for whatever cash is in my wallet. I'm dead either way, but those laws go beyond the crime and carry penalties for motivation and thought.

And now, with the loss of Hillary Clinton, state-funded college campuses are turning from bastions where speech must be maintained completely free to places where conservative "firebrand" speech cannot even be allowed to occur.

Not really Martin. Everyone wants things their way. Rights & wrongs are only in the ears of the beholder. Truth? Lots of luck finding that. As Dr. House once said: "everyone lies". So it's best to assume everything is a lie until proven correct. And lots of luck there. Us homo sapiens are f@#ked- up. No, I'm not making reference to homosexuals. Well, unless someone wants it to be. laugh

And what's-his-name ran an honest campaign?
