WALKING IN THE LIGHT
Words: Glen King,
Music: Michael Borges
All Rights Reserved 2002

Verse 1
I fear no evil, I see no cloud
I feel no panic in an angry crowd
My step is sturdy, my head is high
I am bathed in streamers from the sky

Chorus:
I am walking in the light, in the light of Jesus,
I am walking where the shadows never go, in the light of Jesus,
He's showing me the way up glory road, in the light of Jesus.

Verse 2:
I turn each corner, I give Him praise,
I cross each river on stones He lays,
My heart is open, my thoughts are divine,
I am washed in love that never dies.

Bridge:
The mountains melt like the wet October snow,
The oceans drain and disappear,
In this world of distant dreams and friends,
He is always near.

Final Chorus: (with modulation)
I am walking in the light, in the light of Jesus,
I am walking where the shadows never go, in the light of Jesus,
He's showing me the way up glory road, in the light of Jesus.

Michael,

Good professional mix as usual. I like the
way you chose to sing the chorus. The music reminded me of St. Elmos Fire. Every time I hear Midi drums I can't help think of the eighties. Good message your sending also.

Michael,
Thanks for the listen. Glad you liked the vocals. There was one or two spots in the last chorus where I thought I might be a tad bit sharp on the lead, but maybe I was just having a "flat" day. He he!

David,
Really, St. Elmos Fire? I haven't heard
of them, but maybe I'll look them up sometime. If you find them on the net, please
send me a link, would you? Regarding the midi drums, any suggestions would be great. If you could recommend any software programs or routines that would make it sound more like "2003" instead of 80's, that would be great if it would make an improvement. Thanks for your input. Glad you liked it!

Regards,
Michael

Had a lsten to "Walking...

The Vocal and Instrumental balance was very good and the overall song has a strong message

From a purely technical viewpoint may I suggest that you try to sing with a stronger attitude. My old teacher said "singing from the throat instead of the stomache is a natural tendency for most singers depending on the confidence level". You have a good voice so stand a little back from the Mic ( with clipping in mind ) and make us have the lyrical message straight in the face! [Please understand I am not saying change the tonality of the voice to a Rock sound !]
Also, have you considered "Double-Tracking" the voice as it would sound much more natural and resounding than using Reverb.?
The message will gain from it I think but thats just my opinion.
Lovely thoughtful piece
Tony

Tony,
That's some awesome critique and good suggestions to help improve my singing.
As you could tell, I'm not trying to sound like some "rock star", I was just enjoying
singing along with the music, but I'm learning coach! [Linked Image]

By "double tracking", I suppose you mean offsetting the two left and right tracks to create more of a stereo effect?

If you could send me an e-mail sometime with a little more detailed description of how to implement that technique, I would be stoked to try it! [Linked Image]

Thanks so much for all your kind input!!
Michael

Michael,

St. Elmos Fire was a eighties movie starring
all the brat pack folks. Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally sheedy. I don't know maybe it was the drum and fill sounds that reminded
me of that. As far as drum Ideas I think you
should look at Loop CD's such as Smart loops
and Loops for acid thats if your running a
computer based porgram such as cakewalk. I find it really easy to build my drums for a song this way. Also you can get a more modern sound with actual real drumming broken up into bits to assemble like a puzzle.
It's worth looking into . I guess midi drums
even with a little reverb added have become
a pet peeve of mine.

Michael,
Thanks! That makes sense as long as both parts are sung fairly well (closely) together in the same style and of course in synch, etc.

Sometimes I just duplicate the original and
off-set it by a few milli-seconds to create the same effect. Perhaps with just a little
chorus effect, it might sound good for some songs, especially in the chorus areas.

David,
Thanks for the nice history lesson! LOL
I don't have Calkwalk but I have Digital Orchestrator Pro and Cool Edit Pro 2.0
I'll see if I can download some free samples of "smart loops" to test!
Regards,
Michael

Michael

Nudging the samples to create an effect is very similar to what Reverb does and is 'mostly' (not always) used as an SMPT editing tool to synch Video.
As MJM said, if you sing the part again the effct is very different; precisely because the synch is not 'exactly' the same each time and each voice has its own quality. Try it and see. I'm glad I did.
Many informed people have mentioned to me that the top profesionals sometimes sing a track up to 6 times! (I don't know how much truth there is in this).
Its a case of suck it and see I think.

Good composing all
Tony

This could have been straight out of Godspell. I enjoyed it very much and up to your normal high standard.

Tony,
Thanks for the "xplaination"! Now I really understand what you mean. The closest I've come to actually trying that technique was a special song where I came in on the violin for a short instrumental break. I worked out two parts and simply panned one hard left and the other hard right. It gave a nice natural stereo effect. The parts where similar enough, but with differant scale expressions.
It turned out to be a nice mix!

Gerry,
Thanks for taking the time and giving me the Godspell award! [Linked Image] It means a lot coming from a composer who's standards are almost always near genius, if not occasionally above!

Blessings to you & hope your having a great Sunday afternoon!

Thanks Kathy!
It's amazing how much I learn every time I do one of these new projects. Also, I finally got a new sound card last week that works a lot better; main thing, it doesn't crash while I'm recording, so I'm very relieved about resovling that issue! [Linked Image]

Take care & God bless!
