I saw ads last night while watching SNL for this songwriting competition. So I did some research and found that this is an Adam Levine show that has gone through some hurdles the get to the point where they're ready to launch the first season. In 2016 they had to be cancelled because the original terms on participation, from what I read, required participants to give up rights to their songs in order to participate.I read their current T&Cs and invite others to do the same. It's another BIG MONEY giving a NOBODY that small chance to make it big. The songwriting reality show thing has been tried before. I know BRAVO network had one years ago. It did require the songwriter to perform. I don't get where the "make a celebrity" thing works for a songwriter. Just because one can write a hit song doesn't mean one can write hit songs(did you notice the plural). Whereas with a singer, that skill is not dependent on being able to write hits - just perform. The travel to LA and be available for 3 months thing is kind of a downer for us parental types. Any other observations about this show?

That 'turn-over-rights' clause is a real motive killer.

There is something in the business known as a 'Career Song', the Song you release and become known for. Suddenly, to get 'noticed', you sign away all rights to personally exploit your Career Song. You, of course, want to put your 'best foot forward', so you sign away rights to your Career Song. Whoever wrote that clause into the contract knew exactly what they were doing, and hoped the dreamers didn't.

As you point out, that may be the only hit they ever write, and may become a classic, re-recorded, re-used many times over the years in film and other commercial exploitations. But you get none of the benefit because some slick lawyered-up operator got you to sign your name to a legally binding document.

A Song can be worth a fortune; a single Song. 'Ownership' is your power in contractual negotiations. How much of the rights to Publishing Royalties do you have to sign away to get a Publisher to do the legwork of getting the Song to market? 'They' want 'you' to sign a deal totally advantageous to them. You want a deal reasonably advantageous to them, and to yourself. 'They' want a piece of the Songwriting Royalties too. How much are you willing to give up, if any? 'They' want to change one word in the Lyric, making 'them' a co-writer, eligible for an equal share of Songwriting Royalties. Who controls the Master recording? What are the limitations of the uses of 'your' demo, or 'their' video and/or audio of your performance? Who is authorized to enter into contracts for Synchronization Licencing? When, if ever, does a Reversion Clause in the contract 'revert' these rights back to you, the 'owner', the creator of the Intellectual Property (IP)?

There are many considerations worthy of examination and consultation with a lawyer before you sign your name to any legally binding contract. I think most eager participants in these 'shows' have only a fantasy about what can happen if they participate. The realities are a lot less imaginary, and more concrete, written into contracts by those who know the implications of getting you to sign in agreement.

When assigning Publishing to a Publisher you need to read the Publishing Contract carefully and if necessary hire a Music Lawyer to read it and go over it. Must Major Publishers are legit but some others may not be. If you don't understand something in the contract, ask them to explain it to you. There is no such thing as a standard publishing contract so be aware. I once received a publishing contract from the guy that did one of my demos for me. It was so messed up no one could understand it and it did not contain a Reversion Clause. He refused to include a reversion clause so I passed.

The general public does not seem to be into the songwriting part of entertainment that much. They light up to personalities and performances.
Blake, Kelly, Jennifer Lopez.

I don't know if Adam Levine can drive a show alone. But, I've never been able to figure out why Maroon 5 is so popular either.

Maybe they are going about this one a little differently.

We'll see.
