Hi all. Here's a new single of mine, released today. I hope you enjoy it. Song link here: The Devil You KnowLYRICS: I’ve got the devil in my ear He knows all my fears With all the madness he shares You can get lost in there Yeah, that’s why he’s here There’s a devil way up high You’ll get sold all his lies Take a chance, roll the dice Feel the warmth of his fire Well, don’t it feel nice It’s the devil you know Not the one that you don’t That’ll keep you far from home Holding on in the night To your prayers and your hopes Like a dog that won’t let go of a bone I’ve fought the devil all my life It’s left me scarred inside But every day, every night I’ll be up for the fight I've gotta find that light 'cause it’s the devil you know Not the one that you don’t That’ll keep you far from home Holding on in the night To our prayers and our hopes Like dogs that won’t let go of a bone It’s the devil you know Yeah, the devil you know Oh, the devil you know Yeah, the devil you know It’s just the devil you know ©2019 Philip Marino

Sorry, Phil:
I liked the lyric but Spotify would not let me listen without signing up... and I'm not going there! Do you have a free and unencumbered "work-around" so I can hear your work?
Regrets, ---Dave

"The Devil You Know" ©2019 Philip Marino
(I don't think these long Notes at the ends of Lines work right. I think the words would work better if those Notes were shorter, more conversational. I think some Lines sound 'halting' waiting for a cue of where to begin so you can do the long Notes at the end. The more direct delivery in the Chorus seems to work well.)
I’ve got the devil in my ear (my, Singer-Character, First Person) He knows all my fears (my) With all the madness he shares You can get lost in there (you. Maybe say 'I can get lost in there'?) Yeah, that’s why he’s here (Saying 'you' shifts it to the Singer-Character advising others, philosophically. I wonder if it would be better if he's talking to himself.)
There’s a devil way up high You’ll get sold all his lies (I've been sold all his lies) Take a chance, roll the dice Feel the warmth of his fire (This Line seems off the beat, the cadence.) Well, don’t it feel nice
(Consider flipping the Lines in the Chorus. The 'far from home' Line seems a more strategic concept than the Rhyme-Word bone'.)
Holding on in the night To your prayers and your hopes (your) Like a dog that won’t let go of a bone It’s the devil you know Not the one that you don’t (you) That’ll keep you far from home (you) (Repeat THE Hook/title to end: "It's The Devil You Know". I think making the title the last Line left ringing in their ears could make it more memorable.)
(This Verse is all the Singer-Character, telling his experience, my, me, I'll, I've, not advising others philosophically.) I’ve fought the devil all my life It’s left me scarred inside But every day, every night I’ll be up for the fight I've gotta find that light
(Another idea: The Devil I Know'.) Holding on in the night To my prayers and my hopes Like a dog that won’t let go of a bone It's The Devil I Know Not the one that I don't That's keepin' me so far from home) It's The Devil I Know
It’s The Devil I Know Yeah, The Devil I know Oh, The Devil I know Yeah, The Devil You Know It’s just The Devil I Know
There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

Thanks, Phil:
For going to all that trouble for me. Enjoyed my listen. The production is good and you have great vocal quality in your voice. Best of luck in all your musical endeavors.
Cheers, ----Dave

Phil,
Not sure if you are looking for crits, as you mentioned "here's my new single," which sort of implies, "finished but have a listen." I absolutely love this vibe in general/melody/vocal tone/acoustic guitar track! I think you have a lot of potential with this song. I did get Gary's constructive crits and share some of those thoughts should you want to take the song back into production. IMO, a combination of tweaked pausing and holding fewer notes as long will allow the verses stand out better on their own and improve prosody in a few areas--those were my thoughts before reading Gary's comments.
But more importantly......you have a great canvas here with a sweet production blueprint--all sounds are sounding fantastic together--a very nice write indeed!
