I needed a simple fiddle track and didn't want to beg off the local fiddler again so I bought a cheap electric violin off amazon almost a year ago and went at it, thinking, shoot, I can play electric lead guitar, how hard could it......Unmercifully difficult instrument.
But sometimes for a fleeting second I sound better sometimes.... kinda.
Anybody else dare the four stringed instrument of frustration?

My friend, mentor and co-writer (back in the day) decided he would pick up the bow... and quickly put it down. I never had the courage but I hear it really takes some dedication. Best of luck with it.

I've learned some hymns as those have nice slow familiar melodies and can noddle around improvising a bit. I have no speed yet and the fingers while not fast, outpace my bowing. It's crazy how something as simple as boom-chucka-chucka. boom-chucka-chucka, boom-chucka-chucka can be such a psych job to bow for any length of time without messin up.
I can play the fiddle part for Seminole Wind as it's easy and the youtube video shows how to play it. Just when I think I might me gettin somewhere I'll see a real player on the internet and just go...Oh.

Practice, practice... practice, Ronnie:
You'll get there and having another instrument in your repertoire is always a good thing. Keep us posted when you have time.

I imagine a 'composed' riff becomes easier to play with repetition. Instead of searching for notes you know where to find them and how to produce them.
I just listened to Bob Dylan's "Desire" album and recall that he saw a woman walking carrying a fiddle case and stopped and asked her to play on the album. It enhances the whole work substantially. There may be some riffs there you could enjoy to expand your repertoire of possibilities.
There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

Thanks Gary!
If I had Dylan's money and influence at the time I wouldn't have to do this. With me being a who dat? She would say, leave me alone creep!

Well, I don't know if you can buy a DVD on how to play the Violin or not but you can Google and see. It does, as most things, require a lot of dedication if you are to be successful. Dang!

I use YouTube. It's awash with guidance. Not that a positive effect on me yet but yeah, If you wanna learn how to do something YouTube is the best right now. My dear wife got me an Acoustic Violin for Christmas. After playing the electric unplugged for 6 months I got used to the mercifully quiet sound of the unplugged electric. I had never bowed an acoustic fiddle. Wow is that loud!! right next to my face! - The mutes that came with it aren't working sonicly for me so until i get better that acoustic violin is staying in it's case! Squeaky but fun.
