I was at a friend's house where they have Television. I gave mine up recently when they took a step back to require my cable-ready TV to have a cable box to function. So anyway,

"The Hunger Games" shows were on, possibly a Trilogy, "The Hunger Games" and then "The Mockingjay" Parts I and II.

I noticed there was something odd about the commercial breaks. I came out of my flu-ish delirium to pay attention next break. Commercial ad, 1, then 2, then 3, in rapid succession, then 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. And back to the show. Fifteen commercial ads, all brief, one after the other; but fifteen of them!

Next break, 1, 2, 15. Next, 17 ads. Next I counted 13, but I may have lost track.

I think they've geared these ads to the target audience they expected to be watching this particular show. I didn't time them, or get an overall time for the breaks, or note what each was for. I remember insurance, two big box stores that sell building supplies, some TV network shows, surely some food, yes, sandwiches, pizza. But man! Fifteen of them in a row, rapid fire. I'm worried they subliminal messaged me to eat chocolate instead of having sex, or buying a Nissan instead of a Ford, or voting...OMG! for someone despicable instead of someone less despicable!

I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. Beware.

LOL I know what you mean. Of course advertising is what pays the bills. I believe in a 30 minute show they are allowed to have 10 minutes of advertising. That is up from 8 minutes a year ago. Next year it may creep up again until all we'll be seeing is advertising. We are just pawns in a chess game of life that the very rich businesses have to brain wash into buying their products to make them even richer. You may be wise in getting rid of your TV but don't turn on radio, just more of the same advertising, just more local businesses.

Another interesting side note is if you really pay attention, you will find that the shows themselves are also part of the commericals. They do tie ins for alcohol, cars, clothes, soft drinks, laundry detergent, etc. It's called PRODUCT PLACEMENT. You will often have their characters doing spots on the commercials and there are tie ins all over the place. One of the reasons for this is that people are so fast to tune PAST the commercials. They will switch to another channel, mute them or just skip them completely. So companies are doing anything they can to get their products in there. It's what pays the bills people.

One of my favorite ones right now is for FORD. It is the 43rd year of the 150 (I think it is) truck. The commercial opens with the new big Ford truck driving down the highway. On the background is the song 'EAST BOUND AND DOWN" recorded by Jerry Reed. That song was a bit hit in 1977 in a huge Burt Reynolds movie called SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT. As the camera pulls back, there are dozens and dozens of other vehicles driving down the same road, all together. On the back of one, being pulled in a trailer, you see an iconic "SHONEYS' BIG BOY, statue, which is from the 70's. if you look close, all of the vehicles, products they are pulling, references from all over, are from the 76',77, 78' area. I was in high school at that time so it hits me very hard. And that is the point.

IT HITS EVERYONE FROM THAT ERA VERY HARD. Those of us in our teens and early 20's at that time, are now at the age where we could afford one of those trucks. So we are the target market for those. If you study commercials, you will find all of them with little references that bring those triggers back to us. They do it on every product, find their target market, and then shove as many references as they can in a 30 second spot.

That;s advertising. Pretty funny if you know what to look for.

In the video biz a good film-maker would be on the lookout for opportunities for Product Placement.

"Hey! I've got this video for this Song soon to be released. It mentions coffee, shows people making coffee, drinking coffee, happy, shiny people, drinking coffee. Would you be interested in having us put a can of your brand on the counter? Or should I call another brand? Cost? Well, let's talk."

Revenue streams. Capitalize!

Remember when we, the general public were watching "free" TV on a limited number of local stations, depending upon whether or not you were in a metropolitan area? Then, congress... doing the bidding of the networks and their cronies, sold us a bill of goods that Pay TV would be better and there would be fewer or no commercials because we would be compensating them for that with our monthly cable payments. Another great example of how John Q. Public is screwed and taxed at every turn.

I also pay attention to the number of commercials between breaks and that number appears to be growing, just like Gary pointed out. By the time they return us to our regularly scheduled show... I've forgotten the show or the plot... or both! Heck, I can nearly microwave a pizza during the commercial breaks. I'm going to do my best to buy one of those cheapo new fangled TV antennas, place it as high in my attic or my chimney as possible, aim it at the most stations I can pick up for free... and tell my satellite provider to observe the mistletoe on my coat-tail as soon as my contract expires.

90 percent of the junk we get in our low-end "package" is either junk, Televangelists, Spanish speaking stations or "shows" selling stuff while pretending to be shows. Crap is crap. Enough is enough. It does no good to contact your Senator or Congressperson. They are part of the problem and the networks own most of them and besides, they spend every waking moment running for office in order to stay in power... and in the pockets of the networks.

I tell my kids to please, please... do not provide me with one of those gizmos you talk to for turning off lights, locking or unlocking your doors, arming your burglar alarm system, etc. They are little more than spying devices so big brother can monitor your life... and listen to your conversations. Hell, I may eventually decide to return to getting my entertainment via the local library (if they survive) and nearby radio stations.

God Bless America... we are in deep dish horse-manure... and our freedoms are disappearing rapidly. I don't really believe "The Russians did it!" As Pogo said, we have met the enemy and it is US!

Dave you are dead on. Freedom is fast becoming another word that has lost its meaning. We are so commercialized to make the rich richer that we can't see the forest for the trees. They are out to make us so brain dead that we just become consuming zombies. Work, if we have a job, consume products that they market to us through advertising, so the money returns to our employer to make them richer. When 95% of wealth belongs to 5% of the population, we know something is wrong with this world. They are to queen bees and we are the worker bees spending our lives in slavery providing their every need. When we retire they give us just enough pension to keep consuming what they produce. Once we stop buying, we become expendable Doctors no longer take you seriously, how much longer will you be their patient. The last ones to have a kick at you are the funeral homes and they kick really hard. They make up their profit from you in death what they didn't get when you were living.
Look up Dave, there's a better life coming for those that prepared.
