I remember being immersed in this when I wrote it. Dusted it off and was looking at it again. Observational.
Should be a blues/swing feel

Vague in Vegas

Been burnin up daylight for so many years
The people you've known have got stellar careers
plus beautiful wives and kids they adore
the most that you've got is an easy pay whore

So, you chase the fastest star in the night
make up for lost time in the city of lights

but... dreams are

Vague in Vegas
they end differently
but always start the same
You don't know how you are gettin' there
You dont know it plays out
yeah, dreams are
Vague in Vegas every time around

A darked eyed Latina approaches your set
either knows what your dreamin'
or you're as lucky as can get
She smiles and you quiver
speaks and you're froze
she's perfectly bronze
from her head to her toes

She could be the answer to half of your grief
should you leave now 'fore you learn she's a thief?

Cause love is...

Vague in Vegas
it ends differently
but always starts the same
You don't know how you are gettin' there
You dont know it plays out
yeah, love is
Vague in Vegas every time around

You blow on your fingers as your tossle the dice
breath deep for a moment askin God for advice
don't know if he's with you but you aim what you say
the delicate touch might help you some way

cause, lady luck lives somewhere north of here
has an apartment between courage and fear

yeah, faith is...

Vague in Vegas
it ends differently
but always starts the same
You don't know how you are gettin' there
You dont know it plays out
yeah, faith is
Vague in Vegas every time around

This is a very good piece that seems to describe what I have heard of the Vegas scene quite accurately. Never have been there myself. One time years ago I went slumming in a downtrodden Chicago neighborhood which now has begun to gentrify, which we now know isn't always that good either, especially for those that are left behind. Proves that you can find scamps and scalawags anywhere, not just around gambling tables, as a piece I wrote about my little journey proves. In the real world I really wasn't robbed in the way shown in this piece but it didn't happen to me elsewhere once by a rather glib talking gal.

OF SCAMPS AND SCALAWAGS

c2002 Brian Beecher

Bill was sitting at home one night
In his oasis of peace
Heís never been the kind for sitting still
Excitement really was his cup of tea

Around the ladies he would express
A carefree playfulness
He had a way of doing things
Which definitely did not make perfect sense

Heíd travel to the world of scamps and scalawags
Where there is a lesson to be learned
You run into those who cheat and lie and brag
When itís your turn
You know you will get burned

Practice a little tolerance
And you may learn something new
That was a lesson Bill learned
Way back in the hale days of his youth

Linda had a way about her
That made old Bill believe
Promising a romantic encounter
Blinded to what she had up her sleeve

How she looked was of secondary importance
She had the ability to charm
She made an excellent impression
So he would spend the night in her arms

Linda was nowhere to be found
When Bill woke up with the sun
He went to put his clothes on
And discovered all his money gone

He still goes to that street but
It can be harder than usual
To settle down to the routine
He no longer allows himself to be fooled

He finds it helpful to realize
Sad and wiser come what may
That night with Linda taught him
That sometimes people donít mean what they say

Welcome to the world of scamps and scalawags
Where there is a lesson to be learned
You run into those who cheat and lie and brag
When itís your turn
You know you will get burned

Your piece brought this one of mine to mind. See if you think there is any similarity.

Thanks Beechnut. I like your title and your lyric, not sure i see the similarity.

There is no lesson in mine, it's just about somebody who is "chasing" life and uncertainty..

Some people go to Vegas for a vacation, some people go to have some fun.

Others go with the lone intention of changing their life.

In retrospect, i think I was talking to myself, but using a narrator, offers a little protection.

I've been in this guys shoes, I think I could do it acuratetly.

It all fits together nicely.
Similar theme to one Travis and I wrote a couple of years ago called "Death of Cards".

Would be nice to hear you put it to music.

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Thanks Vic, ill look for your tune in your bunch of songs.

Mine is not as much about gambling as it is about searching, but searching in the wrong places. Somtimes you make the right connection and it helps you,
sometimes you make the wrong one and it destroys you.

I could sit on a couch and go on about it for days lollllllll

Hi I like this, except this part,

the most that you've got is an easy pay whore

I'd suggest taming it down maybe like
the only love you get is what you can pay for.

Vague in Vegas
it ends differently
but always starts the same
You don't know how you are gettin' there
You dont know it plays out
yeah, love is
Vague in Vegas every time around

In the chorus I feel the second and third lines are weak I'd try and keep the (vague) vibe throughout the chorus
I like the absence of rhymes
With (vague) you have a lot of avenues to explore,hazy/ misty/obscure etc,

hey just my op
all the best

Thanks John, in "it ends differently but alway starts the same" it's exactly what i wanted to say... because its vague.... you go there thinking one thing but it almost never turns out how you think, whether its on the table, or with a woman, or believing.. dreams are vague. love is vague, faith is vague are the three themes.

Maybe it needs to be heard to fully get it. But I will think over your suggestions

Here are some ideas to kick around.

Vague in Vegas

(YOU'VE) Been burnin' up daylight for so many years
The people you've known have got stellar careers
plus beautiful wives and kids they adore
The most that you've got is an easy pay whore (Like they say; you get what you pay for.)

So, you chase the fastest star in the night
make up for lost time in the city of lights

but... dreams are

Vague In Vegas
they end differently
THEY always start the same
You don't know how you are gettin' there (You don't know how you got here)
You dont know it plays out (You don't know HOW it ALL plays out)
yeah, dreams are
Vague In Vegas every time around
(Vague In Vegas)

A dark-eyed Latina approaches your set
(SHE) either knows what you're dreamin'
or you're as lucky as YOU can get
She's perfectly bronze (Flip the Lines. Finish describing her; Then her effect on 'you')
from her head to her toes
She smiles and you quiver
speaks and you're froze

She could be the answer to half of your grief
should you leave now 'fore you learn she's a thief?

Cause love is...

Vague In Vegas
It ends differently
IT always starts the same
You don't know how you GOT here
You don't know HOW it ALL plays out
yeah, love is
Vague In Vegas every time around
Vague In Vegas

You blow on your fingers as you tossle the dice (tossle ain't a word, but might pass. They get it.)
breathE deep for a moment askin' God for advice (breath Rhymes with death. breathe Rhymes with seethe)
YOU don't know if he's with you but you aim what you say
the delicate touch might help you some way

cause, lady luck lives somewhere north of here
has an apartment between courage and fear (I think apt. is too specific. Maybe 'place' between courage and fear.)

yeah, faith is...

Vague In Vegas
It ends differently
It always starts the same
You don't know how you GOT here
You don't know HOW it ALL plays out
yeah, faith is
Vague In Vegas every time around
Love is,
Vague In Vegas, every time around.
Dreams are,
Vague In Vegas, every time around.

Hey Gary, thanks for your perspective, its good to see you doing your thing around here.

This is one where I wrote the lyric without any concept of the music. Usually im not successfull when I do that. I have tried several versions of this one was a swing kind of thing and also a bluesy thing.

Im trying to work on my production skills so i have alot of tunes that need attention in the future, whether this one gets recorded, I dont know

Remember the old 'noir' movies, black and white, the reluctant detective, or just some guy, some jamoke, the scenes playing out as he narrates as if we're hearing his mind? I got that kind of vibe. That vocalization might suggest a musical treatment. Some Lines sung, some narrated, the voice changing in an audibly obvious way. As long as you 'report back' to the Chorus to tie it all together, it could work.
