"Betrayal" is song 3 0f 7 and out of sequence with what I've posted already.

"Now I Know" (song4) was a young woman's plea to be taken back by her lover.
"Where Was I" (song5) was his response

"Betrayal" tells how, after being evaded for 3 years, she tracked her lover down to Corpus Christi and drove from Cheyenne through the night to get there. Arriving at dawn she makes her plea to be taken back. "Betrayal" depicts her arrival.

I sent Mike a fairly tight GV. What he did to it is amazing. Of particular interest is the instrumental solo which was layered, full of contrast and beautifully harmonious...and unique. Can't compliment him enough.

Work has been interfering with my video making time so that is not ready. Will post later.

Thanks for Listening

Betrayal

V1
Dawn was barely breakin, it dimly lit the bay.
He yawned as he was wakin, to start a Satur-day.
(He) pulled on Friday’s jeans (and) gathered table scraps.
He walked down by the sea, to feed a feral cat.

TURNAROUND
There she was.
Three years had come and gone.
There she was.

V2
Raven hair, bright blue eyes, as pretty as they come.
Her silhouette against sunrise, struck his senses dumb.
She promised him forever, that lasted ‘till one night.
She lusted with another, and broke his heart for life.
TURNAROUND

V3
Stress and tears shone on her face, she’d driven through the night.
Possessed by fears he’d walk away, upon her very sight.
He put twelve-hundred miles between her memory and his mind.
The sight of her that morning lit him like a fire.

TURNAROUND

CHORUS
Love is a gift from heaven.
A pure and flawless form.
Betrayal leaves a scar on it that never will be gone.

What does a young girl say who dearly loves this boy?
That’ll make a sin wash away and restore what she destroyed.

SOLO (piano)

CHORUS
OUTRO (partial repeat of V1)

Hi Martin, my name is Letha. I haven’t been in for a long while, so we haven’t met. Nice to meet you. I just listened to your song, and wanted to tell you I think it’s a beautiful write and performance! I remember Michael, and he also added so many beautiful additions. My first time back in a while, first song I listened to, and it nearly made me cry...that’s a good thing lol! I could so hear it as a movie soundtrack! Thanks for posting, and best of luck with a beautiful song.

Letha,
It's nice to meet you too. I don't like to make people almost cry...except with songs. That's very high praise. Made my day. Thank you.

Neil,
Thanks for listening and the encouragement.

Lovely song, Martin.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

I will listen to this when I get a chance. Its hard to listen for half a song and not all of it, but I will listen to your parts.

Frankly, I think the stuff you were doing around the time you wrote "Marfa Plain" was your best stuff. That's a song you should revisit, something special about that one.

Thanks as always. smile

FD...
Don't understand the reference to "half a song."
With regard to "Marfa Plain." That was done in a studio with musicians and me playing rhythm and lead on guitar, and I liked it.
But as a piece of music, I personally don't think that I have ever been involved in anything that is superior to this song. I'm particularly pleased with what Mike did in the instrumental solo...it's layered and contrasting, yet harmonious, yet cranky and quirky. I would have never come up with something I like that much for the solo without Mike's involvement.

Thanks for spending some time on the song. Am looking forward to your input.

Awesome work, Martin and Mike:

Not many songs "show up" here at JPF... and demand they get "another spin!" This is one of those songs.

The phrasing is nearly perfect... and the line "There She Was" is used to perfection. At the "outro"... the listener is expecting to hear that line again... and you took full advantage of it. I don't think you yet believe how good your vocal sounds... but let me know when you are looking for vocal work!

Mr. Z took what you sent him and twirled his magic wand again... and it was "no holds barred!" Sheer mastery, you two. Proud of you both. ----Dave

Martin,

Well, this is just really well done! Kudos to you both. As a single it stands well on it’s own two legs, but in the context of the broader project, I think it is even more compelling. Love how you set up the turnaround the first two times, then on the third, just repeat the first line. Very slick.

Agree, Mike killed it on that piano solo—the conversation between the piano and the guitar—brilliant. Nice write . . . and while sometimes I get the sense that you underestimate your vocal talents . . . you are spot on here. Terrific tone and phrasing.

Really looking forward to hear all these tunes start to finish. Great stuff!

My best to you,

Deej

Thanks DeeJ.

Mike gets better and better. That solo was a signature piece. I never expected anything so cranky good.

I thought I did a respectable job singing it. I have to spend a lot of time working around what I can't do. And Mike does some effective editing. I will often sing a line down a same note becuz I can't reach up to what I want to do. Or I will cut a word short when my voice clips. With practice I m making more and more of what I have.

One of these days I'm gonna write a song around your voice. I really like your sound.

Thanks for the praise.

Martin

Musically it resembles Turn The Page and/or Wanted Dead or Alive...Youngstown by Springsteen.... and in the intro....Angie

it's heartfelt and I enjoyed it, my only complaint is that the chorus may not really be a chorus. It sounds more like a c Section, but maybe thats just me.

Other than the BPM maybe, I don't hear any connection to Turn the Page or Wanted. Maybe overall emotionality. if connecting it to an antecedent I would lean more towards a ballad such as Edmund Fitzgerald in emotion and speed. With Mike's addition of the cello I hear more Game of Thrones than anything which you suggested, and not lot of that.

Have you noticed that you appeal most everything back to a Springsteen song?

That might be a badthing Martin, who knows? to sound in the ball park of a master?.... Theres no doubt those songs are in there. Does it matter? Not really, but im not making this up.

If the song sounds like something, it's not Springsteen's song that it resembles.
It's whatever Springsteen's song sounds like, that it resembles. Other than being a slow ballad I hear very little similairity.
I enjoyed the energy in some of his early stuff, but never really understood him as a phenomenon.

As Jim Carey would say ALLLLLrighty then.

Grain of Salt Martin, good to see you working hard on your music, thats what I take from the whole experience.

Devastating and beautiful, Martin. Mike takes every song he touches to a higher level. Well done.

Thanks everyone. smile

Martin's songs take me on deep, sonic journeys. Like Letha, this brought up much feeling in me, and I'm glad some of that made it into the production, though it's hard to go wrong with the solid, evocative work Marty hands me.

Thanks again,

Mike

So talented. So intensely dedicated.

Martin, I just looked at the lyric laid out, you have the part i viewed as the c section as the chorus. When probably your chorus is the there she was part. And in fact the love is a gift from heaven part is a c section. It may just be a labeling issue....

carry on

The chorus did not break loose as much as I would have liked. I tried some things but couldn't get anything to work better than what I ended up with.

Mike did a good job of setting it apart as much as he could with the production. It's the type of story ballad that I don't regard as needing a big chorus.

I would have liked it but couldn't find anything that worked and sounded unforced.

I thought the there she was part was good but possibly you coula built on it instead of standing on the same chord. But it served the purpose of "moving the needle" or in football terms, moving the chains...

"There she was" had two intentions. Primarily, V1 describes a young man going about some fairly regular activities that commence a Saturday. Then the tonal mood changes and the singer says "There she was." Which is really a question for a listener...There who was?
Drama, suspense and all that.

And then I never gave her a name just described her beauty, what she had done and why she was there. She remained "she."

Also, in a long Story song with more than 2 verses, "there she was" was a a turn from the end of one verse back into the beginning of the next. And relieves a bit of the monotony.

So......"there she was." wink

Let me add that most of your stuff has real "soul" to it, and I dont mean James Brown Soul. It always sounds like you're in there. And it sounds authentic, Cant learn that, alot of people have zero soul.

But you can learn to take bits and pieces and put them together. Study pop songs.

Enjoyed listening.

Martin,

I think this is my fav of your's. Sorry so late at the show!

This was exceptional in all respects. I really enjoyed the performance and production. Well crafted lyrics that paint a "real" tragedy.

Great work, great song all involved!

Hello Martin
Strangely the vocal reminded me of another member Dave Gill i think from Texas and not been around for a while.
The song is stunning on every level.
A tight lyric and good solid believable tale
The arrangement including the vocal delivery spot on.
Excellent work to you and Mike both

I'm a fan. "Now I Know" is one of my favorite songs that I've heard here and this is right up with it. Vocals, production, melody...all great, but the lyric - wow!

I know you're doing a sequence of songs, and for me anyway, it all really works. Congrats!

Travis....
Thank you very much. I appreciate your praise and encouragement.
Hopefully Dave Gill will come back around. I'd like to hear him.

Martin

Gavin....
Thank you vey much, Particularly regarding the lyrics. Many of the songs in this little story have been one side or the other of a conversation. In this one, there was no conversation and I tried to get the physical environment and circumstance to tell the story. Im very appreciative that you and Travis felt like it did, Thank you,

Martin
