Regarding 'Four Strong Winds': I dunno know, Gary. Nice job tweaking, but I prefer the original version written by Ian Tyson. To me it has more poignancy, including in the hyperbole 'a hundred times or more'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC50XxmgDCgIan and his (then) wife Sylvia Fricker had a hit song with it in their native Canada (just them with acoustic guitar and vocals/harmonies). There's something about the lyric's simplicity and rawness, perhaps represented also in the change of season to winter. Regarding tweaking well-known songs in general: I'm wondering - is there not some copyright-related ruling about changing the lyrics to a song (without the author's permission), thus making it a derivative work? (Unless it's satire, in which case I think other rulings apply.) I had a situation a few years ago involving a song of mine. My PRO informed me that the person tweaking the lyric to put his own music to it was infringing my copyright, and he was forced to remove it from the site on which he'd been looking for additional musical collaborators. (Actually, what the guy did at first was take my lyric as it was - without my knowledge or permission - and began to add his own music, although the lyric was already in a song. He was forced to stop, and that's when he began to tweak the lyric, but was told by the site's copyright department that he would be banned and all his music removed if he continued.) Anyway, perhaps someone here knows something more about copyright and changing lyrics. Donna

I think it's a great song. The Neil Young tune. All you're really doing is changing the pronoun from I to You.
I think its good practice to rewrite lyrics and try to work within their structure, but there's a question of authenticty. I think there's a reason its coming from the singer and not somebody else. More connection.

Well, It is a common practice for an Artist to need to adjust a lyric/song when recording it. There is a Clause in a Publishing Contract that allows some editing if needed. I can't remember the guys name at present, from California I believe who said he learned to write songs by finishing others songs he didn't know all the words to. Probably Artists when doing Cover songs in live performances adjust the lyrics from time to time.

Hi Gary:
Interesting post... tweaking cover songs. I don't do many "covers" but find they are great practice... and I often "tweak" the lyric... even the melody (ever so slightly) to either put my own spin on the song... or to make up for my many inadequacies.
I've always been told that the "Big Name" Artists often tweak a song written by someone else to suit their own style... and sometimes, IMHO, to show others they can get away with it.
At my level, I doubt if I would have the courage to ask for a compulsory license to do a "cover" song... and even though I've heard it might "liven" up and album, a cover by me would probably ensure its demise. LOL!
