I liked the song. Do you perform live? Take a good look at your facial expressions on this video. This is a song that you are singing to someone. Would you have the expressions you see on your face in this video if you were conversing with your lyrics instead of singing? The expressions should be the same. One has to be an actor in addition to a music performer when you're in front of the camera. What kind of reaction do you think you'd get from someone to whom you'd direct your lyrics with the facial expressions seen on your video? I hope this helps.

When a singer sustains notes it can easily risk loss of the word meaning. The normal pronunciation of a word can be sacrificed to the Melodic note being sung. Ideally, each facet, Melody and Lyric, works together without one being sacrificed to the other.
When you get to THE Hook, the "Smile On Me" words are clear and easy to understand (I think those are the words, anyway!). Some of the words in the Verses are lost, failing to arrive in my ear as coherent words, laying out the story. A more conversational style with notes sung more akin to what they would sound like in normal conversation might be more effective in communicating to listeners the story you want them to have. Because, without getting the story, THE Hook can't serve its function of making the point of the story.
Dolly Parton's Song, "I Will Always Love You" comes to mind, the sustained first and last words/notes working well with the 'spoken' delivery of the "...Will Always Love..." words.
There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com
