Hi Neil:

This is an exceptional song. I would encourage you go get a pro-demo done if you intend to "pitch" the song to the music biz in general. You and I, my friend... have reached our golden years and our vocal delivery is not what the public wants to hear. (You don't know how much I wish I could turn back the clock... but I can't.)

May I suggest you consider making contact with one of the guys and gals who frequent this site and do demos for a fraction of the cost of what you would pay in Nashville. I don't know if you are performing the song in front of an actual band (love the lapsteel in the background) or if that is a backing track. If it is a backing track, you might want to talk to Laura Kelsey. If a track must be created to match what you have on soundclick, Mike Zaneski comes to mind. PM me if you need assistance but, be forewarned, I think both of them are pretty busy now so the wait time can be pretty steep.

If you don't plan to "pitch it" and already have a venue for performing it... proceed with vigor. Be aware that the "Country or Americana" genre audiences are shrinking with each passing day. This is only my personal observation and I have no "real facts" to back up that statement. I do read my ASCAP newsletter each week-day by Dean Kay and I don't think the news about music in general... and song-writers in particular, is very encouraging. Let's hope and pray it changes for the better.

Best of luck with it. ----Dave

Dave, I appreciate and recognize the validity of your comments and suggestions.

I simply cannot sing songs I used to sing...
I posted this when The song from The Mule came out...old folks rule. LOL
I realize there is no market for this so...I have done nothing more with it. It's a one off.

THIS IS AN EXCEPTIONAL SONG. from you means more than anything I can expect down the road. If someone enjoys it great.
Cheer & thanks for your sincere advice.

PS...I do wish people in the biz could "hear" the song in the track as you have. Of course the demo business would suffer. I am being a little cynical here.

Neil,

Dave's comments are spot on here--I think this is among your best efforts. Some nice and clever lines throughout that strikes the right balance thematically. Well done!

All the best,

Deej

Thank you very much Deej...another feel good moment and self-reflection as a songwriter going forward.

Hey Neil,

You're making us all feel old! Super lyrics and a really nice concept. The music fits quite well, and love the hook! Bridge melody might be improved--it digresses nicely, but just feel there might be another chord progression to work better there. One of your best songs for sure here!

Hi Neil.
You have managed to produce quite exceptional songs on a regular basis for many years, being especially strong as a lyric writer.
This song again lyric wise ranks as one of your finest.
However i have to go all the way with Dave's comments.
Your vocal delivery is your weakness.
And well worth considering a couple of things.
Do you create good songs only for them to be forgotten as the vocal/ production is weak? Or do you hire or get someone to make those good songs noticed and undoubtedly at a level that will make radio stations/ publishers want to listen to them?
Isn't it worth a shot at?
Regards
John

Thanks John for the positive comment. I put them here for critique of the song, tempo, prosody, lyric structure, not my singing, that seems not to work so well LOL
I am content with writing. I know the odds of getting radio play here in Canada & USA are almost zero, money wasted.
I have songs played on Internet stations, that I have recorded in a pro studio with my son Sean Cotton as producer. (being that for me since he was 15..he is 48 next month. )
These songs you hear HERE are not of that quality. I'm impatient and want to write the next one. frown
Maybe it will be undoubtedly a HIT.
