Been a very long time since I’ve posted anything. Here’s something my muse sent to me recently. There’s no chorus. Wondering if it needs one.
Summer Frogs (C) 2018 Greg C. Brown
All alone again tonight Fix myself a bite to eat Something salty, crunchy, soft Maybe something sweet
I’m not really hungry though But need to keep my strength up Pour myself some Chardonnay In a dirty cup Pour myself some Chardonnay In a dirty cup
Close my eyes and say a prayer Thank the Lord for what is there
Leave the dishes in the sink Let ‘em soak there overnight She’s not there to care at all No one there to fight
See what’s on the evening news Politician tells his lie Makes me think of better times But don’t ask me why Makes me think of better times But don’t ask me why
Close my eyes, I’m dozing off Wish that I could shake this cough
Found a photograph of us From a day I’ll see no more Road trip to the outer banks When our love was sure
Now it’s almost 12 o’clock I forgot to walk the dog The autumn air is cold tonight No more summer frogs The autumn air is cold tonight No more summer frogs
Close my eyes and try to sleep By myself beneath the sheet
Now it’s almost 12 o’clock I forgot to walk the dog The autumn air is cold tonight No more summer frogs The autumn air is cold tonight No more summer frogs No more summer frogs No more summer frogs
If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding.

I guess it depends on where you want this song to end up...commercially it should have Hook...maybe the music can provide that. The writing is good.

Thanks, Neil, I appreciate the feedback. I rarely write lyrics without a chorus, but I was kind of on the fence with this one. On one hand it seems to work fine like it is; then again, it may need something to help tie things together. I’m still pondering it.

I like it! I don't think it needs a chorus since you have the repeated lines. They can act like a chorus. The only thing that seemed a bit out of place for me was the "see what's on the evening news" verse. In all the other images, for me the mood/impression is someone learning how to live alone again with maybe a little regret. I didn't get that from this verse. Is there a parallel between the politician lies and maybe his partner did as well? (And maybe I'm overthinking this LOL?) Another suggestion would be "just myself to warm the sheet" instead of "beneath the sheet" to avoid a common phrase. Good job!

I like it. I love to title. Perhaps by coincidence, frogs outside our window here that have been silent all winter started up yesterday. They keep crooning with a lonely mix of determination, desperation and urgency that I can only wish my lyrics could capture.

Hi Jo Nell. Sorry for taking so long to get back here. I appreciate you having a look at this. You pretty much hit the nail on the head. This person is lamenting the loss of someone, either from divorce, death, who knows? Basically, all the verses are just showing how he is trying to move on and do the normal things he has to keep doing in the person’s absence, walking the dog, eating dinner, or just watching television. All while acknowledging the fact that he is alone and missing her. I do like your suggestion for the sleeping beneath the sheet line. Good call! Thanks again.

Hi Mike. Frogs are pretty cool. While the song isn’t specifically about frogs, I thought they concluded the song rather fittingly somehow.
Thanks for looking.
