No ordinary man V He dug ditches, mined coal, sawed timber and more kept that wolf otherside of our door. As kids he was gentle but we understood money don't grow on trees, but if he could, he would C Not just an ordinary man A dad not a father, you understand? Loving arms a weathered face and hands Not just an ordinary man V We'd sit on his knee, he'd read bedtime stories Always had time to talk through our worries Taught us to stand up for what we i thought right and if push came to shove, don't you run, you must fight
Chorus
B When the years moved on When those days weren't so kind Everything that he taught us was ingrained in our minds And come the day he needed us most It was payback time

When we were kids always loving but we understood money didn't grow on trees, but if he could he would C Not just an ordinary man A dad not a father Loving arms, weather worn face and hands Not just an ordinary man V I sat on his knee, he'd read me bedtime stories wiped my brow talked over each childhood worry Taught me to stand up for what i thought right and if push came to shove, don't you run you must fight
Chorus
B When the years moved on When those days weren't so kind Everything that he taught me planted firm in my mind And when he needed us most It was payback time C

Travis,
Nice start on this one—I’m not quite feeling the rhythm in the lyric on this one, but I’m sure you’re in the early stages on penning this. But I like the theme. A few quick thoughts:
—Not sure the fourth line in the first verse follows from the third.
—In the chorus: The “no such thing” seems more general than personal. Are you saying that it’s true for everybody, or just the father in this song? Similarly the “we all loved” phrase: Who is the “we” in this song—you reference “our” and “we” in the first verse as well. I assume you mean siblings, but maybe there’s a way to make that clear?
—Just a thought for the bridge—perhaps use the last part to show an example of how everything came back . . . and then move what you have in the latter part of the bridge to a final verse? May not work, so use or lose as they say.
All kinda random thoughts above, but I hope they are helpful in some way.
Regards,
Deej
