I'm darn near speechless, Martin:
I understand the need for "length" in this song-story... so well told, performed, orchestrated... and the video is so-o-o- effective. I hope you never forget the strength and honesty of your vocals. As always, Mike stirred the pot with his Music Chef's Hat tilted slightly back as he performs his magic. If it did not already have a "destination" of your own choosing, I would suggest you "pitch it" for the movie cue business... or high-end advertising. It's that good. Well done, you two... and best of luck with your unique "book." I'm hoping you may have let the "cat out of the bag" by revealing there are seven songs planned... and you've completed six! (That means Mike's Studio time may have some gaps in the schedule!) ----Dave

Thanks Dave...
Mike has always had the sounds in his head. And he has been good at this since I've known him. But with each passing day, he becomes even better and better.
Working these songs up with him is a profound pleasure.
Appreciate the kind words and encouragement.

Thank you Vic. It's the biggest production that I've ever done. All of it with no studio involved unless NashvilleTrax.com did their piano track in a studio. Mike adds orchestral sounds very tastefully. Mike Does everything well. It is great to know Mike. A fellow named Steve King did the piano solo and added texture through nashvilletrax.com. And that's it. A good, easy to manage, musical outcome with only three parties involved in three cities. Internet is amazing. Thanks again for your compliment. Martin

Tasteful piece. Bluesy, Tony Bennet meets Willie. I particularly liked the little rim shot/cowbell? simulating the clock ticking, and the music seems right for it. Not that it matters, but the chord progression and feel reminds me of Springsteen's Point Blank. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li2pfFRbDBw Give it a listen and see if you hear it. One of my favorite songs by the way But I thought this was pretty emotional and solidly done

FD.... "Tony Bennet meets Willie." I calculate that as a bullseye. I go out for open mics now and then. I enjoy covering "Damn Your Eyes" by Eta James and "Back to Black" by Amy Winehouse. (I don't sing the first verse of Back to Black) I wrote Mike before I sent the GV that it would be coming from the direction of those songs with a crooner-ish bent. And I often have been told that I sound like Willy even though I cannot imitate him worth a damn. Your Tony Bennet reference nails what I had in mind. Willy nails what I've never been able to escape. Seriously though, thank you very much for your compliment and encouragement. I sincerely appreciate it. Will definitely listen to "Point Blank." Martin

Listened to Point Blank. Never heard it before.
PB uses the same 4 chords throughout the song. It is the same 4 chords for mine in the verses and choruses. I switch to G and G flat in the Prechoruses. It is the same key. The chords last for a bar each as do mine. The bpm seems a little faster. The lyrics are obviously different. The lyrical phrasing is very different.
But I hear what you are talking about. There's a few keys in music. After all these decades of popular music, I think it's going to be hard to write a song that doesnt sound like something somewhere. I do think that most people are not as tuned into music as you are and would not equate the songs even if they had heard them both.
Whadayado?

Martin It's a classic closing in on one point progression. Widdles its way down to a resolution. Nothing proprietary about it, its yours as much as it is his. But it does lend to a certain emotion, it suits your song well. Just my ears, i hear everything in everything.

I think this is really nice, maybe a bit chilling. Love the performances, mix, vocals. Love the line, "When you're not here I can't even love myself." Excellent work!

Hi Martin/Mike,
Enjoyed this one for sure--a very captivating melody with lyrics to match. It's not easy holding someone's attention for 5 min. but the production and song vibe allow that for me. I did at 3:40 feel that it "might" be cool to have the music ramp up to a key change after the solo just to give the song even more build & ending power--not sure however, and just a idea. It really didn't remind me of anything that I've heard, but it does have a "vintage" sound that for me I could could envision Sinatra more than Bennett singing.
I think I remember you mentioning to me a couple mo. back that you had a song upcoming with the title "Time" when I had posted mine with that same title. I certainly enjoyed this.
Beautiful write here--congrats!

steady-eddie Thanks Eddie, This is that song. It seems that you and I were contemplating time at the same time, a short time ago. "If you've got the money, honey, I've got the time." Great minds...right? When I get this little 7 song story finished with Mike, I'm going to go back through everything and take another look. I'll look at a lift then. I may not be able to reach another 1/2 step or full step vocally, but it does sound like a good idea, because of the length of the song. Appreciate you listening and making the suggestion. Marty

Thanks so much Carroll. You're close. Every once in a while I go out to Puffabellys in Old Town Spring or over to Green Oakes Tavern in Humble to do an open mic. Maybe we can meet up for a beer and a song sometime. Regards, Martin

Martin,
Boy, this is just super good! Having heard all the songs in this collection to date, they really build all on each other. This is a sweet, revealing write, a compelling vocal and a wonderful production. As a single, the length could present challenges commercially—not that it should, IMHO, as length shouldn’t matter if the song is engaging, as is this one. But, regardless, it fits so well as a part of the seven songs, and so the length, in that context, just doesn’t matter--it actually makes the song all that more compelling. Really impressive work here.
And the video is pretty darn good as well. Looking forward to the final chapter (and I’m kinda hoping for a happy ending for those two kids)!
All the best to you, sir,
Deej

Thank you DJ. I appreciate the compliments and encouragement and I know that Mike does too. As far as the length and commercial viability...I have no reason to think that my songs need to be commercially viable, so I let them be whatever length they seem to want to be. Complete with long intros and whatever else. It's not my personal story. Been happily married for 29 years next month. But for some reason, the story is very therapeutic and in-the-moment to write for me. So I try to make the songs as appealing as I can, before I give them to Mike and he takes them up several levels... but otherwise, I just ride along with the song until they finish themselves. Thanks for stopping by, Martin

Wow......seriously..........this really is universally themed, everyone has felt this stuff......I could hear the arctic monkeys doing something like this. Fricking harmonies are great, lead is great....everything mixed well. My only nit would be the drums not really kicking in at any point.
but......pffffttt....who cares.

Morning, Martin:
I was roaming around the "net" this morning and listened to one of my friends over in Louisiana sing a song... and was struck at the many similarities in his voice and yours. Don Mason does a gig at a famous restaurant in the Shreveport area doing his performances mostly on the weekends there. Thought you should know.
All the best, ----Dave

All the best, ----Dave Shreveport? I stopped there for gas once. I misread this at first. I thought that you meant the song was similar. He'a an old guy. I'm an old guy. Sometimes old guys sound alike. I'll give a listen. Thanks Martin

Glad you took a look, Martin:
Like most artists doing gigs... I'm pretty sure Mason attempts to somewhat "emulate" the artist who originally did the song (just like our pal, Zee) but every now and then, Don allows his own, authentic voice to sneak in... and to my ears, you guys could be first cousins. The song I heard was "My Valentine" and I don't think he has it posted on his web site. I had never heard the song before... expecting "My Funny Valentine" or something similar. It appeared at the SynthZone's General Arranger Forum. I don't believe non-members can listen to song-posts without joining... but could be wrong.
No matter... just the opinion of a geezer whose just about heard it all... and forgotten most. LOL!
Have a great weekend. ----Dave

My Valentine is on his website.
I gave a listen and can see why you felt the way that you did. Kind of a "talky" singing style on that song....which describes me too.
Have a good weekend Dave.
