Agatha’s Rainbow
Agatha Jane was twelve years old in October ‘29 The day the banks all closed their doors and a place called Wall Street died But her father held his hand in hers, said “Everything is fine The land will not forsake us and the good Lord will provide.”
The crops that year were not as great as the year before But her father shrugged and calmly said, “Next year there’ll be more” The winter left without a drop; in the spring the sun was bright And Aggie’s mother asked her girl to pray for rain each night
‘Cause don’t you know there’s bound to a rainbow after every rain God himself will smile upon his people of the plains Bring thunder, Lord and lightening to ease the land from pain And don’t forget the rainbow for Agatha Jane
Summer passed without a storm; the wheat died in the ground Then the winds came howling through to blow the dust around The dirt piled high upon the eaves like snow in summertime Rain was just a memory and a prayer at suppertime
Aggie’s father went to town, he knew the times were bad But half the stores were boarded up, there was no work to be had And everywhere he looked he saw men whose hopes had died He squared his shoulders, turned around, and swore that he’d survive
‘Cause don’t you know there’s bound to a rainbow after every rain God himself will smile upon his people of the plains Bring thunder, Lord and lightening to ease the land from pain And don’t forget the rainbow for Agatha Jane
Just like pioneers of old with strength of heart and hand Aggie’s father kept his faith with God and with the land But year by dusty year went by without a single change The only thing that grew up strong was Agatha Jane
Then one morning Aggie woke and could not believe her eyes She ran outside to see the clouds covering the sky And as she looked up, wondering, she heard the thunder’s call Turned her face into the wind and felt the first drops fall
The rain came down in silver floods Healed the land with liquid love And Aggie danced in the knee-high mud Like a newborn Christian soul
‘Cause don’t you know there’s bound to a rainbow after every rain God himself will smile upon his people of the plains Bring thunder, Lord and lightening to ease the land from pain And don’t forget the rainbow for Agatha Jane
No, He won’t forget the rainbow for Agatha Jane

fallendiva,
What a nice write! Might be a bit long for a song, but that's never discourage me . . . and shouldn't you. Good luck with it!
Regards,
Deej
