Down on Main street Intro Down on Main Street the light is blinking. Your warning to drive slow. It’s no longer a busy road. Most places have been closed Verse She used to be quite popular. But time hasn’t been so kind. She once had quite the entourage Now a friend is hard to find. Chorus The interstate has passed her by Her fruits dried on the vine. Time has passed her by. Time has passed her by. Verse Her heartbeat isn’t so steady. She is barely holding on. All the old folks are unhealthy The young ones are moving on. Chorus The interstate has passed her by Her fruits dried on the vine. Time has passed her by. Time has passed her by. Verse You see the old girl is dying Yes she’s fighting just to breathe. She knows that her days are numbered. But she vows she’ll never leave. Outro Down on Main Street the paint is peeling Sure signals she’s not well. She is walking on shaky legs Her health has gone to hell. Chorus The interstate has passed her by Her fruits dried on the vine. Time has passed her by. Time has passed her by. Tag Down on main street The last light has died.

This is the anatomy of many smaller mostly rural towns that dried up after the Interstates were built. Yet those within, say, 50 miles of a major city have literally become suburbs and exurbs, the poster children of urban sprawl. Would you believe that Naperville, IL, west of Chicago, was once just a sleepy little town? Now it is a city of over 100K. And south suburban Plainfield, situated between Aurora and Joliet, experience a massive rebuild following a deadly tornado in August 1990. It went from sleepy town to sprawling suburb/exurb following the disaster.
I often wonder if such forsaken small town could become a have for retirees who no longer have the desire or the income for hotsy-totsy restaurants and big-name entertainment? Especially those of modest mean in search of cheaper housing and the kinds of family diners that have become nearly extinct in areas with large populations.
