Something we probably all have through much of our lives. From the pen of one who in his early years had to fight his own civil war to gain independence from a boarding school I was stuck in. Not really the subject of this piece, however.

DESIRE FOR INDEPENDENCE

c2018 Brian Beecher

Want to get something started but itís hard
With folks saying not in my back yard
To summon the courage with some speed
Iíll have to follow my own lead
As tension builds throughout the day
I feel there has to be a better way

And my desire for independence
Will crash some fences
Thatís for sure
Doesnít have to be one or the other
Iíll take some cover
As long as I can find a cure

At our best when our most childish needs
And fears are triggered with great speed
Some steady grounding sure would help
Balance our lives and make us well
More fun, joy and passion comes to call
But our world donít want you to stay small

And my desire for independence
Will crash some fences
Thatís for sure
Doesnít have to be one or the other
Iíll take some cover
As long as I can find a cure

If youíve always done things a certain way
Take a different route to save the day

And my desire for independence
Will crash some fences
Thatís for sure
Doesnít have to be one or the other
Iíll take some cover
As long as I can find a cure

Hi Brian, these are some great lyrics! There are three things I want to suggest though:
1. the 'not in my backyard' reference didn't make sense to me at first, but then I realized maybe there's a connection to the 'crash some fences' part of the chorus. like you're crashing through your neighbor's backyard fence or something. Can you make that link more obvious? I think of it as a wink to the listener, to let them know we are letting them in on a clever joke. Otherwise the NIMBY line is just confusing.
2. the line 'but our world don't want you to stay small' doesn't make total sense in the context of the rest of the lyrics. I get the sense that the more appropriate lyric would be something along the lines of "but this world is tryin' to keep me small"
3. 'as long as I can find a cure' ....a cure for what? maybe try to add something to the first or second verse to address what you need a cure for. the tension that builds throughout the day? the triggered fears? the need for balance? Otherwise that last line of the chorus is a little confusing.

I hope my comments help; I have never critiqued anyone else's lyrics before so it feels pretty weird to do so. But I see a lot of strength and promise in this song!
