Hadnt heard this song until i saw it live "Plain spoken" concert I always thought Mellancamp was one of the great Contemporary American songwriters. He's up there with my favorites but I rarely mention him. I always thought he woulda made a great Traveling Willbury too Great moving tune https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SipZ2G31uls"Longest Days" Seems like once upon a time ago I was where I was supposed to be My vision was true and my heart was too There was no end to what I could dream I walked like a hero into the setting sun Everyone called out my name Death to me was just a mystery I was too busy raising up Cain But nothing lasts forever Your best efforts don't always pay Sometimes you get sick And don't get better That's when life is short Even in its longest days So you pretend not to notice That everything has changed The way that you look And the friends you once had So you keep on acting the same But deep down in your soul You know you, you got no flame And who knows then which way to go Life is short even in its longest days All I got here Is a rear view mirror Reflections of where I've been So you tell yourself I'll be back up on top some day But you know there's nothing waiting up there for you anyway Nothing lasts forever And your best efforts don't always pay Sometimes you get sick And you don't get better That's when life is short Even in its longest days Life is short Even in its longest days

I know a great deal about the "little bastard" as he is known (and openly acknowledges) and he lives up to the name for the most part. He is from a town down the road from me and I used to cross paths with him a lot. I also know some of his past band members (one posts here as a matter of fact). They had bad experiences which they shared with me. No doubt he was an amazing talent. Lately, meh. I used to bump into him in our club district where he'd be holding court leaning against a wall surrounded by girls all night. I wished we have had camera phones back then, it was a pretty iconic pose/scene.

Yeah he always said if he ever ran for President they would dig up all kinds of dirt on him. Cant be any worse than what we have and have had in office though
He was always embarrassed about Hurts So Good. I guess when being considered into the "American Songbook" that one may be a sore thumb, but my answer in support of him is he is also a rock n roller and that's par for course. And it's tame compared to what rappers are doing
I loved the raw garage songs like play guitar, stand for something, Warmer Place To Sleep. And the album Scarecrow was a masterpiece.
Apparently a good painter too. A real leftie, he once told Obama an INDIANA senator that he wasn't liberal enough for him lol
Seems all the greats are extreme lefties. But I'm a big fan of his music, and how he did it "his way"
