Hi, all: Happy New Year to everyone at JPF! I hope this past year was everything you hoped and this coming year proves even better. This song was written by Perry Neal Crawford, who shared it in the Lyrics 3 Forum on JPF a few weeks back. Perry set out to write a country song based on a cliche, and the lyric resonated with me right off, both for its simplicity and depth in conveying the longing we have to be the near the people we most love, no matter the time and distance. Perry was kind enough to let me play with it and here’s the result. For now, just a straightforward guitar/vocal—though I may decide to do a more robust production sometime down the line. Hope you all enjoy it! If Wishes Were Horses(V) I look at your picture, my eyes fill with tears at all of the changes through these passing years. And I wish you were near me here by my side, but if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. (C) If wishes were horses, I’d have a few, and I'd saddle one up and ride it to you. I wish you were near me, here by my side, but if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. (V) I write you a letter, explain how I feel, hoping you'll know my love’s true and real. And I wish you were near me, right by my side, but if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. (C) If wishes were horses, I’d have a few, and I'd saddle one up and ride it to you. I wish you were near me, here by my side, but if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. (c) Perry Neal Crawford/DJ Lekich Lyrics by Perry Neal Crawford Music by DJ Lekich

Impressive work, you two. After hearing that expression all my life, it is more meaningful today than ever in our twisted, wrong minded world.
Deej, you made the song your own with that unique vocal... and Perry, nothing is a song.... until there is a lyric... and this is a good one. Congratulations, guys... and Happy New Year. May 2019 be better than 2018... but I have my doubts.
All the best, ----Dave

Hey guys,
I agree with Calvin, don't mess too much with it--I loved it, beautiful in all respects.
It might be cool to add a little extra reverb and delay on the ending when you begin the falsetto outros and back away more from the mic there to make it sound as if you the vocalist is less out front and dramatically fading away a bit--a thought to perhaps experiment with in the studio. You have great passion that comes through your vocals that give you a distinctive uniqueness as a performer--well done!

Real pretty DJ. Nice clean recording too. Sounded authentic.
One thing that seemed a hair out of place to me... It is a very sweet song, melody, lyric and sentiment. "Beggars" struck me as a bit harsh in that context somehow. May just be a personal ideosyncracy.
Real nice tune.

The term “beggars” is an inseparable part of the old cliche the song was built on. The cliche “when pigs fly” doesn’t work without the pig. When I wrote the words I was setting out to write a cliche based country song in response to a conversation in one of the forums. I wanted to present an example of how it has worked in country music over the years. But I could not help thinking of my own children (8 of them grown and spread all over the country) and grandchildren out of my reach. The cliche became very real, and the wish from my heart.

I was unaware of the cliche. But I am now. Thanks for bringing me up. Lovely song. Martin

Thanks, Calvin--
Rest easy . . . I won't get to doing anything more involved until some later time . . . and given the feedback here, maybe it's best leave as is. But really appreciate you giving it a listen and the really kind feedback. Perry did a great job with the lyrics, and once you have that, it's all down hill from there.
All the best,
Deej

Dave, Glad you liked the tune, and as always I appreciate the spin and the support. And, hey, it's Day 2 of what's going to be the best year ever! OK, maybe not, but trying to hold onto the optimism for at least another week or two. Kindest regards, Deej

Eddie,
Thanks for the listen and great feedback. I hear and get exactly what you are suggesting. I've got one other song that I'm determined to finish (another co-write with Travis) and then I'll try to stop back and revisit this one, particularly with your comments in mind. Easy enough to add the delay and reverb (I think) and then fade out the volume a bit. I'll share if and when I get to it.
Hope all is well in your world,
Deej

Martin,
As Perry notes, it's a component of the cliche he built the lyrics around. But it is interesting how word choice can impact one ear vs. another. I commented on Marvin's song (the other "horse" song on the forum") about the use of a phrase ("that woman") that struck me as out of place. And I'm sure it's just a "me" thing, and others wouldn't bat an eyelash . . . but there you are. So that said, I get what you're saying here--and but for the cliche I think I may have the same reservation. But I'm glad you liked the tune!
Hope your New Year is off to a great start!
Deej

Travis,
Thanks for the kind words. Perry helped make it an easy bar to lift. From good words come good songs.

Deej

I too appreciate all the comments. It sure started my year off with some fun. I shared the link to the song with my family and it brought us together over the past few days (face time). Many offerings by fellow posters on this site have given me fun, joy, food for thought, and challenge. Thank you all and thank you JPF.
