(To All Those Who Sacrificed in the fires of the west)
Perry Neal Crawford Dec 2018

Wihungen (one who sacrifices, in the language of the Leni-Lenape tribe of the Delaware Nation)

Lightning storms lit up the valley,
Flashing wildly all around,
Hot and dry was summer's forest
When the lightning hit the ground.

Splitting down a giant cedar,
Sending flames into the air,
Lightning brought the tree asunder
Setting fires everywhere.

All the creatures ran for shelter
With the flames in hot pursuit,
While the people in the village
Gathered all they could recruit.

To the beaver’s dam they scurried,
On a hill above the roar,
Men and creatures worked together
To release the reservoir.

Pouring down the flaming hillside,
Sending steam into the air,
Rushing water sent in torrents
Brought an end to fire's flare.

Then for days the embers smoldered
Spreading wide a smoky air,
Black and thick, a sore reminder
Of the ordeal suffered there.

People standing in the ashes
looking with a heavy heart,
At the lightning bolt's destruction
Of beloved nature's art.

Wihungen the quail had joined them,
Deeply pained with sorrow too,
Now she, with so many others,
Must start over somewhere new.

I can't bear this thing that happened,
Said a boy in heavy sighs,
All the beauty and the memories,
Up in smoke before our eyes.

How can nature with her one hand
Make a paradise serene,
Then with fire in the other
Bring destruction to the scene?

Wihungen the quail responded,
Having lost all she held dear,
Nothing earthly lasts forever,
Nature makes this statement clear.

Death and loss come in their season,
Part of life's eternal round,
Followed by complete renewal,
Therein answers can be found.

Nature will not stop the seasons
Nor demands their passing brings,
Favoring the growth from learning
Both the great and little things.

Watch and wait as through the seasons
More than forest is reborn,
As we grow in wisdom's reason,
We will lose our cause to morn.

Green replaced the blackened meadows,
Blossoms covered fire's scars,
Giant cedars, pines and redwoods,
Stretched their branches to the stars,

Rain and snow the pond replenished,
Merry beat the creature’s hearts
Wiser now all stand astonished
Over nature’s greater arts.

I will start a fire in your coastlands that no man can put out. That is a quote from the bible that always comes to my mind when I see these fires of great destruction that seems to have a mind of its own to keep burning despite all the efforts of man to put them out. Nature often starts these fires and nature puts them out. Then nature renews the forest again, man just gets caught in the process.

The cones of the giant Sequoia tress contain seeds that require fire to crack the outer epidermis in order for the seeds to sprout. The heartbreak for us, in the here and now, is that the rebirth of our forests can take many decades.

Thanks Perry. I think there is so much we're not being told about these fires. I hope the truth comes out eventually. Too many suspicious circumstances led to death and destruction. I am concerned that they will take the land that belong to these people (and those that inherit their property due to their deaths) and soon will begin to mine the gold and other resources beneath their homes. They've burned out people before to do land grabs for developments so the mega rich can get richer at the expense of normal citizens. We're helpless against these people unless we all learn to stop accepting the media fed versions of things like this. They lie and we collectively have to stop swallowing their lies.
