I found this vlog from Nashville session musician RJ Ronquillo really interesting, and perhaps you will too.

My dream as a teen was to be a sideman, but I went to school instead. Kinda glad I did too, but great to see you can do this the modern responsible way. Show it to your kids, and bust the rockn roll myths!

Not for me. Maybe ok when you are young but it would soon wear on you. I don't like travelling much anyway.

Can you imagine how dull it would be if this young man had no computer or internet... miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles! Sleep deprivation, road meals, conversations with folks you don't really know. Bus bathroom... yuk! Arrival, unloading, practicing, staying up into the wee hours entertaining a bunch of drunks and druggies. Then, back on the bus!

No wonder Nashville is one big revolving door.

In order to be a touring musician you really have to like meeting new people and have very low expectations. Touring in Europe used to be good because the food was better and it was fun lerning about other cultures before the Internet made us all mush.

Frank Sinatra toured up to his 80th birthday. And all over the World. When his gig was over, he partied into early morning hours. He always had to have parties with his friends. Exciting life, but not for everyone. I prefer being behind the scenes.

If I were able to choose my poison (touring)... I would prefer to do Sinatra's form of touring... 'cause he could call the shots. Most of these poor souls are only along for a miserable ride.

When I covered a territory equal to half the United States... I hated packing on Sunday nights and that ride to the airport on Mondays. At least I ended up in places with clean sheets... and, toward the end of that ordeal, complimentary breakfasts. LOL!

I've been told our own Mike Zaneski was once a "Busker" and, if so, perhaps he can tell us about touring from that perspective.

Making/creating music isn't for sissies, eh?

Apparently, Ponce De Leon should have gone to Cuba and gotten cigars for his fountain of youth

That tour shown in the video seems like luxury living compared to what I remember, which was more like Dave's description.

I remember trying to hitch a ride in the snow to get home for Christmas Day.
Eventually we were picked up by a mad speed demon who hated everybody on the road and showed it by zig zagging through the traffic, shouting insults at the foe.
I thought my time had come.
Then there was the time we flew back from a gig in Lybia, Africa during one of the
Arab/Israeli wars. Strip searched at the airport, arriving in the UK at 9pm and rushing to a gig in the north of England where we made it just in time to pour on to the stage at midnight. Then driving straight back to London, thankfully numbed by copious amounts of booze.
There were also tales of narrow escapes from drunken gangsters, jealous husbands, sleeping in snow trapped cars and not sleeping at all. Sometimes I miss it all.
It made you feel alive. Those were the days.
Vic

I hated being on the road for too long ,after getting married

Gigging weekends suited me, and still does occasionally

American Air Bases in France and England always a great gig to do

British Clubland was Great at one time now virtually non existent

Theatre tours These days I run four bands , that suits me from

Rock to Country, and a Buble type act with Orchestra ,

My Sons Tour for half a year and thats it , Sure lots of terrible acts

on the road till they die , un healthy specimens alcoholics and drug reliant

Is that a life ??, Thank God its never affected my own family ;

One of the most important principles of songwriting is to remember that a good song is a partnership of many different components, all working together to produce a satisfying musical experience.

In that respect, song components are either enhancing or compromising their combined effects.

Hard yards is an American football expression, you are in Australia right? I know they do have a football league similar to ours

American military bases were great fun to do, as was the British club scene.

I toured non stop for over 3 decades playing a different town nearly every night meeting hundreds of people at each stop. Played in 48 States and over 30 countries. I loved it and the stories that accumulated, but I didn't drink or do drugs so it didn't take a toll on me except for all the bad food eaten along the way. If you love being around the most diverse (to the extremes of the word) people in the world and are non judgmental, it was a blast. Tough to keep a relationship unless you tour together which I ended up doing and which eventually slowed me down but that's life. And now we have so many memories to share into old age. I only wish we'd had camera phones and camera videos so I could have captured more of it. We saw amazing things and people, but often someone has to spark my memory or it is lost to time. But in the end, we're ALL lost to time so it's the way of things. In 20 years very few of us will have existed at all beyond some statistic kept by some historian. Life is quite random so be kind. That's all you can really do in the end.

Didn't ever hit the road. I played in the house band at a resort in the Poconos. A lot of great times. We had to back all the acts that came through. Great experience and great times. Though we did take gigs on off nights. Usually no further than an hour drive.
