Just in time for Halloween I've finished a song with plans to release it properly - I'd love to get feedback on production as I'm no pro. Also some ears on better speakers would be good too.

Is the guitar mixed in well? Are the leads too loud? Is the bass drum too loud?

I have not used autotune so vocals are as-is. Do they have the right amount of reverb/dressing?

Thanks so much all!

Hi Laura!

I really liked your song, a very cool vibe which your vocals compliment very well and sit nicely on top of this mix. As far as production, I pretty much like how you have it, but I might back off the bass a couple of decibels in volume to let it be prominent, yet still be more of a bottom, and less out front tone. I like the subtle percussion, but you might bring that out a bit more. The lead guitar feels right to me, I like it sitting back how you have it in this song, but you might pan it a little more opposite piano giving the arrangement a little more width.

Vocals/bass/drums--centered--(optional pan vocals 15% Left or right)
piano--20% Left
lead guitar--40% Right

This panning keeps the production from feeling less "center crowded."

You can of course experiment with panning--there is no one way that's right or wrong.

Nice Job and cool song! I didn't delve into your lyrics, I'll let someone else chime in there--it does help to get better lyric opinions if you post them where they can be followed while listening. I enjoyed your song, especially your vocal tone and attitude.

So nice to see... and hear you posting a song for us to enjoy, Laura:

As Eddie said, "Your vocal tone and attitude" are what sell the song... with it's powerful lyric. The rest is "window dressing." Personally, I would exchange the piano backing for an electric piano. Don't ask me which type... experimentation usually resolves that question. Naturally, I would have enjoyed following the lyric as you sang.

I have great hopes and aspirations for your career in music... and this is probably just the tip of the iceberg... but yes, this song is appropriate for this time of year... and so well performed.

All the best, ----Dave

Thanks everyone for the kind words and feedback!

Eddie - interesting note about the panning. I haven't experimented with that before and will play around with that today. I'll also adjust percussion slightly, maybe bringing down the bass and the other percussion up a bit.

Calvin - thank you and thanks for listening!

Dave - you are too kind smile The piano track was done for me by a pianist so it's the one thing I can't change. I might try adding some bass guitar?

What a great song Laura and a matching performance
I feel the balance is almost right but a little panning such as Eddie suggests is needed.
Also I think you need a little delay effect on the vocal to make it zing.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Ooooo! I like this...I'm no expert on production but it sounds great to these old ears. A nice slow build with the instruments...great atmosphere. She's a keeper!

Pretty song Laura.

It's a smokey song. That's a good thing. I suggest enhancing that with some more reverb. Don't wanna get down in a bucket but might sound more ethereal with a little more room depth.
I'd bring up the bass some to round the song off some more.
I'd bring the lows in your voice up some and round your voice slightly. It's a conversation and I think that would make it more intimate.

On the other hand, if you dont agree with any of this, just forget it. smile

Liked your song.

Great song and love your vocals. I'll add a vote for more reverb on the vocal.

Thank you! I tried panning for the first time, as well as adding a bit more reverb to the vocals and did a bit of bass guitar for the big end chorus.

I'll share the end result once it's up. Thanks again for all the encouraging words!

Just getting around to this one . . . it was worth the wait. Really nice vocal on this—love your tone and phrasing. You’ve gotten some great tips above on production, all worth pursuing. Will look forward to hearing the next iteration.

All the best,
