Hi everyone,

My name is Irwin, I am a songwriter I write lyric and melodies simultaneously. But lately I started composing instrumental song and so far I like the transformation from writing songs (lyric and melodies) to just composing music only. Their is something about this particular song that I've done that has me thinking (I meant I like this song so much in a way I become a believer in myself) so instead of keeping this feel all to myself I thought I should hear if other person's feel the same way too. I thought about posting it on the mp3 forum then I hesitated
and decided to post it here for the persons who has the knowledge about instrumental songs to Tell me is this song really good or am I fooling myself. Please tell me as it is. I can take it.

Song entitled: "Wish This World Was Never Ending"

This is the link to my song: https://soundcloud.com/irwin-abrigo/wish-this-world-was-never-ending

Irwin the first bit with the chordal riff is not bad. It actually sounds like transition music from a cheesy 80's film. The alternate melodies with the piano dont sound like they belong in the piece.

its' not just about playing any melody over it. its about playing a melody that the listener can follow. Just cause there are no lyrics, doesnt mean the melody can be whatever it wants. Once that piano melody comes in i got lost.

Maybe keep the first bit and work around that. Im not sure how you are generating the music, are you playing or is it all samples?

Hi Irwin.
You've had some good advice already.
The piano melody is wandering. Try to simplify so that the listener can remember it.

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Thank you Brian,

I accept the things you've said in your reply. Now I know I have to work on my melodies some more.

The music being produced, I am playing it all with samples sounds from FL Studio 12.

I appreciate you taking time out to reply.

Irwin

I like songs with lyrics. Instrumentals have to be exceptionally good to grab me and get my attention.

Hi Irwin:

Making/creating music... whether a song or composition... is good for your inner self. The problem arises when you share it with others. Each of us are tuned to different frequencies in musical taste. Some have developed significant experience and musical knowledge while others seek only the rhythm. To most, it is an escape from everyday, mundane life.

Don't give up or take our ideas and thoughts about your composition as being snide or insensitive. Take the time to listen to the compositions of people on this very site... like our own John Lawrence Schick. Notice the significant number of compositions he has made in so many different genres. Confidence comes from practice and knowledge. If you work hard enough, you will get there. Until then, practice every day, learn all you can about the various facets of music. Even resort to listening to genres you don't particularly enjoy.

You have the desire and now you must acquire the discipline to succeed. Best of luck to you.

Hi Everett, Thank you much for responding to my post. I myself like songs with lyrics too, at a matter of fact, I grew up listening to the pop song on the radio with lyric only, But now I find myself wanting to composer Instrumental song. I am hoping to write a good one in the near future.

Hey Irwin! We all work with the same raw materials - 12 half-tones and their octaves. Just a matter of finding a good combination. Infinite possibilities. It amazes me how changing one measure (sometimes one note, or one note’s duration) can lead one in different directions. There are many forks in the road. Many decisions to make along the journey to a great composition. Best advise… enjoy the journey. It's about trial & error.

Best, John smile

Hello Irwin,

A thing that most all songwriters suffer from is "PLAY TOO MUCH ITUS" and "SAY TOO MUCH ITUS." If you listen to most professionally written songs, especially hit songs, you will find them deceptively simple. They have easy to follow, very memorable melodies. Yet those are also the hardest things to write. If this is just for you and your own passions, your own tastes and desires, that is one thing. You can do whatever you want.

If you are attempting to include AUDIENCES (which obviously you are doing here) you need to make sure it is easily relatable, and that average people can understand and hum or sing along. It is a lot of trial and error and you NEVER DUMB ANYTHING DOWN. But you do simplify where it will hit more targets than being too narrow.
Listen to some great long lasting songs, and find out why they stand the test of time. Listen to the classics.
Break down things you grew up with. Follow the melodies and lyrics. If you do serious song study you will find some interesting things. When you apply that to your own efforts you build as a writer.

Irwin, I think your samples might be your biggest obstacle.

Dont let the song write you, you write the song. Let the samples support what you have written

I bet you'd have better success singing a melody in your head first, and then figure out how you will arrange it.

If you dont play,. ask somebody to arrange it for you.

Sometimes electronic music is just grooves, a nice groove can be your foundation, but the melody is still key, that's what people whistle back.

Speaking of "Play too much itus Marc, I saw you playing at what I think used to be the Wagon Wheel at that hotel off 65 heading from the north into Nashville doing a live facebook thing. I watched for a bit and said hi but I think you were a bit busy with a name from the past (now darn it I can't think of his name) but he spoke at one of our events a million years ago and was a really nice guy. It was fun seeing the two of you doing your thing!
