I heard this on a commercial the other day. I think it was a children's hosptial commercial.

I've seen Springsteen cover it live, and it's such an emotional song. Lyrics? Simple and basic, but for some reason the song conjures up alot of emotion.

It was originally done by a punk group called suicide, who are so underrated its not funny. Their version is a bit dark I think, but
it shows how lyrics come alive with the right emotion, or die with the wrong emotions. I'm sure there are tons of covers out there too.

Lyrically that song didn't tax his brain very much, but I guess when you are up there you don't have to do much to please your fans. Like one of the Beatles said, "we can fart on a record and it will sell".

Well to get to a point where you dont "have to do much" to please your audience, you have to do an incredible amount to please them.

Bruce didnt write the song either.

No disrespect intended but...that song was really bad. And the video of people worshipping Springsteen made me cringe. Bruce was a dynamo from 72-84 but he hasn't released a decent record in over 30 years. That entire video was very off putting. Others may feel differently.

Well i meant to speak about the song, shouldn't have used the video. The video is a montage, its not a video for the song, its multiple clips. Thats what his shows are like, alot of love and togetherness.

I 100% disagree that it's a bad song.

I will agree his albums are not really that good any more. A few good songs. Hes still a better perfomer than anybody out there, hands down

Songs are not lyrics is what I was going for, no disrespect taken

Your fame can carry you over many a rough spot. When you are trying to break in and win fans, you have to work harder and be really good. I saw a small concert last night, the singer was better than a lot of performers on the go today, but he is just one of many that don't have a pile of money behind him to make him a recognizable name. Talent is just one component in making or not making it.

Well,
If you don't like this song you can Google YOU DREAMER YOU by Johnny Cash. Recorded many moons ago.

I'll agree with that, but lets put it in perspective.

We concurred that his heyday was late 70's early 80's. We are now 30 years removed from that time. He continues to fill football stadiums that hold over 50-100 k people, night after night, week after week, year after year, all over the globe, whenever he wants to. He has been selling out on Broadway every night for over a year, and it's gotten so even celebrities are having a hard time getting tickets, paying over 800 a seat.

Now, you cant do that if you suck. You can't do that resting on your laurels, you have to bust it every single night, otherwise people will get tired of you. He plays 4-5 hour shows sometimes, which bands in their 20's play less than 2. The only way you can achieve all that is by killing it live. I dont care how famous somebody is, if they suck, im not down with it. I love The Who, it was the first band I really took to, they cant play live anymore man, they suck, the paid band behind them carries them. But that's to be expected they are in their mid 70's

You look at all the old timers, Stones, Who, Neil Young, Sir Paul, Paul Simon, Dylan, none of them make great albums any more, the difference with Bruce is his ace in the hole is live.

He still is a great live performer, I've seen him over 30 times, never let me down. We sat one night though a rain delay at Giants Stadium. His usual show would start around 8 and sometimes go after midnight. This show didn't start till around 10, he still played till 2:30

Im not a big fan of his political beliefs, he's not going to sway my vote, or tell me how to live, but he does make me feel better about my life. Got me through some hard times. The possibilities....

As far as this song, I wish Todd were here. Haven't seen him around. I'll guarantee he knows the band Suicide, I guarantee he likes them, I guarantee he likes this song, I wont guarantee if he likes this verison. But he has a good ear for that kind of music.

Dylan's first lp came out in 62. He made great records in the 70s. Same with the 80s. Shot of Love is good and contains his greatest song, Every Grain of Sand, twenty years into his career. Infidels is outstanding, esp considering he left off Blind Willie McTell and Foot of Pride. It dwarfs Born in the USA, which contains plenty of weak songs. Empire Burlesque is great and even the awful Knocked Out Loaded has Brownsville Girl. He wrote the tremendous Tweeter and the Monkey Man for the Traveling Wilbury's. That song is a hilarious spoof of Springsteen cliches. Dylan's Oh Mercy sessions produced a variety of classics. In 97 he released Time Out of Mind, over thirty five years into his career. He followed that with Love and Theft, also great. His later albums have gems like Ain't Talking on them, not to mention songs as great as Can't Escape From You, which he left off an official release.

I love Bruce from 72-84 but he doesn't compare to Dylan. Or Paul Simon who released Graceland nearly 25 years into his career. The Stones have a far deeper catalogue than Bruce.

Bruce is an energetic performer and people love what he represents. But try listening to a cd of one of his three hour shows. You can't finish it. They're a bore. You need to be there. And that song was really bad. So was the video. I was embarrassed for those people.

Just my point of view...

Dylan verse Bruce live....... I make Bruce a touchdown favorite
Paul Simon verse Bruce Live.... I make Bruce a two touchdown favorite

Were talking about who is more vibrant right now. Not even a choice really.

With the video, the song is very emotional, they made a video which shows the emotion of fans, from different eras and different places and different songs.

If you want embarrasing, watch Springsteen and I...the movie, its showing now on AXIS TV. LMAOOOOO

you talk about fanatics, I wouldnt want to be in that film, and ive seen him 30 times! I mean, he's not Jesus Christ. Hey wait a minute, didn't John Lennon say "And God help Bruce Springsteen when they decide he’s no longer God ….. they’ll turn on him and I hope he survives it"

It's almost dorky to be that much of a fan. Im a fan of the music and the performances, Im not really a fan of the celebrity.

Just dawned on me where I saw the commercial, I was watching a college football game on MSG, and this commercial came on for garden of dreams

I dont know if its an artist or just somebody singing it for commercial, but she sings it great. Beautiful song. It shows that a song can say alot without actually saying anything. Shes doing Bruces version but she sings it better. Lyrics matter most when telling a story.

Hey Couch, I agree that his live recordings dont represent him live, you need eyes to see the presence he has. But I find that to be true about any live recording, I never liked live albums, they always sound like crap. With exception to albums recorded in smaller venues. Like The Who live at Leeds might be the best live rock album of all time, it wasnt echoing all over the place.

I did enjoy the Kinks live album as well

About Tweeter....
In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2013, Tom Petty said in relation to Bruce Springsteen, “It was not meant to mock him at all. It started with Bob Dylan saying, ‘I want to write a song about a guy named Tweeter. And it needs somebody else.’ I said, ‘The Monkey Man.’ And he says, ‘Perfect, ‘Tweeter and the Monkey Man.” And he said, ‘Okay, I want to write the story and I want to set it in New Jersey.’

“I was like, ‘OK, New Jersey.’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, we could use references to Bruce Springsteen titles.’ He clearly meant it as praise.”

The chord sequence is pure Dylan, it goes round and round… and round
