I read some where that Spotify is considering allowing indie artist to upload songs directly to them as opposed to going through a streaming service. I can't find where I read it now, is it true? Is this good or bad for the streaming services? The artist themselves?

Hey Everett,
Probably very bad. No quality control and a whole bunch more of white noise to get through.
cheers, niteshift

Its probably always been the case there. itunes you can do direct too. The problem with being on anything like that is, if nobody knows you exist, nobody's gonna click. Its a bit like being an unknown author of an unknown book, and expecting somebody in a library to come across your listing in the cabinet catalogues. I have had fun though, i enjoy doing random searches...most listeners go where they are told to go. But i have accidently found some gems, and some, that make you question God's existence. I sometimes search a few letters and see what comes up. One day, i was searching sheryl crows catalogue, and found an obscure song entitled "Sheryl Crow" Clicked it, and i still enjoy it in a quirky way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtaXHBYaPgU&list=OLAK5uy_n0yYJHn0IBmMARBloxzzzPRJ8M17eq7Mo

Here's the link to what Spotify themselves are saying about it. It's in beta at the moment and limited to a few hundred indie artists in the US by invitation. They do say that they intend to offer it more widely in the future. https://artists.spotify.com/blog/now-in-beta-upload-your-music-in-spotify-for-artistsMy first reaction was similar to Niteshift regarding quality control but actually it probably doesn't make much of a difference. The distributors that you are required to go through at the moment don't do quality control beyond the purely technical aspects. The biggest difference might be that if everyone starts doing this you might have to upload multiple files, one to each streaming service / download store. That would be a bit of a pain.
